[edit] History
St. Bernard's College traces its origins to the establishment of 'St Monica's' at Moonee Ponds in 1917, by Brothers C. O'Keefe and T. Quinn. Students at this school were taken from Grade III to Intermediate (Year 10).
In 1940, the school was extended to take the Leaving Certificate (Year 11) and this necessitated the building of the first St. Bernard's on the Strand Moonee Ponds with Brother Cregan as the first Headmaster.".[4]
[edit] College Crest
The school's crest was designed to remind student's that in the spiritual armour of the Christian, it is one's Faith that is the shield. The crest is made up of four main elements:
- The shield is divided by a double Chevron, or inverted V's, and are said to represent strength. It is said that a chevron often symbolised the founding of a family, in this case, the numerous family of the school's present and past students.
- The cross on top of the crest is there to indicate that St. Bernard's is primarily a Christian school.
- The Greek letters on the upper ribbon are said to symbolise both God (the Father) "the beginning and the end" and Christ "the first and the last".
- The school motto is printed in Latin on the upper ribbon "Discere et Agere", translated as "to learn and to do".[5]
