[edit] Welcome to Wikipedia!

Hello Splamo, welcome to Wikipedia!

I noticed nobody had said hi yet... Hi!

If you feel a change is needed, feel free to make it yourself! Wikipedia is a wiki, so anyone (yourself included) can edit any article by following the Edit this page link. Wikipedia convention is to be bold and not be afraid of making mistakes. If you're not sure how editing works, have a look at How to edit a page, or try out the Sandbox to test your editing skills.

You might like some of these links and tips:

If, for some reason, you are unable to fix a problem yourself, feel free to ask someone else to do it. If you are stuck, and looking for help, please come to the Wikipedia Boot Camp, where experienced Wikipedians can answer any queries you have! Or, you can just type {{helpme}} on your user page, and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Wikipedia has a vibrant community of contributors who have a wide range of skills and specialties, and many of them would be glad to help. As well as the wiki community pages there are IRC Channels, where you are more than welcome to ask for assistance.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask me on my talk page. Thanks and happy editing, -- Alf melmac 23:06, 15 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Deleting redlinks

Hi there. Just a note: you don't really need to remove all the links to non-existent articles. Some removals are appropriate as the subject is unnotable and will likely never get an article of their own, but it's generally the safer bet to just leave the link in. After all, someone might see that it doesn't have an article and become inspired to write one!

In any case, welcome to Wikipedia! — Saxifrage  02:54, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

I have to second Saxifrage's comments. I have reverted your redlink deletions on Razzle Dazzle as any of those individuals may have articles written about them in the future. 23skidoo 22:50, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:Lmpfrontbig.gif

Thanks for uploading Image:Lmpfrontbig.gif. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator.

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you have questions about copyright tagging of images, post on Wikipedia talk:Image copyright tags or User talk:Carnildo/images. 03:53, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Cruise ship edits

Hi Spalmo. Can you please be more careful when you edit cruise ship articles? Almost all of your recent edits unnecessarily removed existing information and formatting. If you want to add information, please read over the article and add your information in the appropriate areas without wrecking the work the other people have already contributed. Thanks. --NormanEinstein 20:59, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

I reverted a few of your changes because they removed large chunks of existing information. For instance, this edit you made removed two paragraphs of detailed information. I realize you made some other formatting changes to that page, but please try to work with what already exists. In another example, this edit you completely deleted an existing infobox and replaced it with a list. I'm sorry if I upset you by reverting, but please continue editing because most of the cruise ship articles do need some work. You might want to checkout some guidelines and see what's going on over at the Wikipedia:WikiProject Ships. --NormanEinstein 21:57, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Military history WikiProject Newsletter, Issue I

The Military history WikiProject Newsletter
Issue I - March 2006
Project news
From the Coordinators

Welcome to the inaugural issue of the Military history WikiProject's newsletter! We hope that this new format will help members—especially those who may be unable to keep up with some of the rapid developments that tend to occur—find new groups and programs within the project that they may wish to participate in.

Please consider this inital issue to be a prototype; as always, any comments and suggestions are quite welcome, and will help us improve the newsletter in the coming months.

Kirill Lokshin, Lead Coordinator

Current proposals
  • Proposed guidelines for categories of military people are currently being discussed. A number of issues have already been resolved, but the proposed scheme is still in draft form and further input would be very welcome.

[edit] Deletion of Elation

I noticed that you nominated Elation for deletion. For some reason, it isn't appearing properly on the AfD page. I took a further look, though, and it looks like you're the only author of that article. In that case, you can request a speedy deletion of the page (via Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion). Just put the {{db-author}} template on the page, and mention why it should be deleted. It should be sufficient to explain that it's a duplicate of the MS Elation article, I think. Using the speedy deletion process is more streamlined than AfD in cases like this. --Elkman - (talk) 16:24, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Deletion of Enchantment of the Seas

When nominating someone else's article for deletion, make sure that you don't blank the article in question while doing the nominating, so that other users can judge the article's merits. Andy Saunders 16:44, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] M*A*S*H articles

Yo, thanks for starting on them. One thing: Please bulk them out a bit. I got all excited, only to be greeted with one sentence and a stub template. Don't do that to me again, and pad them out. Thanks, mate. Sarsaparilla39 11:35, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Scouting article work

If you are getting this, it is because you do or did work on Scouting articles (see Wikipedia:WikiProject_Scouting#Participants_and_primary_areas_of_interest).

As the Scouting WikiProject has been formed since early January 2006, we've had many great improvements made in this area of Wiki and I want to personally thank everyone for their help. We don't always agree on things, but we keep moving forward. YIS, Rlevse 22:09, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Ship tables

Hello Splamo. I have been changing ship infoboxes to change the "Launched" field to "Placed in service". The folks at CruiseCritic apparently don't know that ships are launched months or a year or more before they are finished and commissioned, formally named (sometimes), and placed in service. And the use of the military template for passenger ships causes problems-- unfortunately there is no agreed-upon passenger template yet. So I have been changing "Displacement" to "Tonnage", and have also changed "Launched" to "Placed in service" as the last is a date applicable to all ships, regardless of the differences in the method of their construction (on slipways or in graving docks) or inauguration formalities. If you want to discuss, reply here; I'll watch your site. Thanks. Kablammo 02:49, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Beanie Baby tags

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! We welcome and appreciate your contributions, such as Beanie Baby tags, but we regretfully cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from either web sites or printed material. This article appears to be a direct copy from http://www.aboutbeanies.com/swingtags.html. As a copyright violation, Beanie Baby tags appears to qualify for speedy deletion under the speedy deletion criteria. Beanie Baby tags has been tagged for deletion, and may have been deleted by the time you see this message. If the source is a credible one, please consider rewriting the content and citing the source.

If you believe that the article is not a copyright violation, or if you have permission from the copyright holder to release the content freely under the GFDL, you can comment to that effect on Talk:Beanie Baby tags. If the article has already been deleted, but you have a proper release, you can reenter the content at Beanie Baby tags, after describing the release on the talk page. However, you may want to consider rewriting the content in your own words. Thank you, and please feel free to continue contributing to Wikipedia. Matt Eason 19:08, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

Aah, okay, I can certainly see why you moved it to a new article. It's almost certainly a copyvio on the part of the original contributer (User:63.157.234.208) so I'll leave the db-copyvio tag on the new article. Matt Eason 19:34, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Commercial vessel template

Hello. As you may know, there are a variety of infobox templates used for ocean liners; at least one of which is ill-suited to passenger vessels. As a consequence of a discussion I had with User:Ebyabe at User_talk:Ebyabe#RMS_Queen_Mary, Ebyabe has generously agreed to create a template for passenger vessels. It appears at Template:Infobox Commercial Ship. Its creator needs assistance with the fields for the template. For example, it will need a tonnage field, but would not need a displacement field. Should beam be moulded breadth, or extreme beam? Should length be pp, or oa? Given your interest in this area, would you be willing to particpate in the project? If so, go to Template talk:Infobox Commercial Ship and weigh in. It may be that different templates are needed for passenger ships (gt), freighters (dwt, net), containerships (TEU) and that one size will not fit all. Thanks for your interest. [edit] Clive Cussler

A request for confirmation that Cussler is an Eagle Scout has been on Talk:Clive Cussler since September. I did some searching at the time with no results. If you can confirm that he is indeed an Eagle, then we will welcome the cited entry. --Gadget850 ( Ed) 15:22, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Category of Clive Cussler

A few things here - the term Book or Novel are in the case of Cussler's work nearly as applicable. But they are Novels, delivered in the form of Books. A small semantic point but there it is.

The other thing it is normal when proposing a category removal to propose first and empty the categories only if the debate is in favour.

The next thing is that "most of the novels are grouped in "Dirk Pitt novels" which was already a "deeper" category under "Novels by Clive Cussler".

Next thing if there is a valid debate about the future of these categories it is really the "Books by author" or "Works by author" of the 22 March that should set the precident.

I didn't mean to cross sword with anyone and still don't, but the area of categorisation is such a fiddly thing it is difficult to bring clear order to the caos, hope to understand and I'm sure that is what we are all "trying" for. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 15:30, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

Hang on a minute you have just moved them all again - this is a little silly - they are novels after all. Can we agree to put them back - at least until the debate is had. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 15:34, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
"The Sea Hunters" books I notice are "not" in the "Books by" category as non-fiction (i.e. not Novels) that doesn't make too much sense. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 15:36, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for that - we are here to co-operate after all and that is how I like it. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 15:48, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

As to the "Deeper" category issue. I personally would tend to agree with you and place the individual articles in both the "Novels by" and "Dirk Pitt novels" cats but that is not the way it appears to be done here. Plenty of editors make it their work to remove articles to the deeepest category possible and reduce the category count per article. I can see why, but it makes the logic of a category less easy to see. If you did that I personally would not object but I can see it being reversed by others, and fairly soon. Cheers. Thanks for you efforts on the Clive Cussler articles by the way, and I think articles on the other series is a good idea! Regards :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 15:48, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] National Scout Jamboree (Boy Scouts of America)

Per the Language of Scouting, the BSA style guide:

jamboree
A term chosen by Baden-Powell to describe the first international gathering of Scouts camping together in London in 1920. The term is restricted to indicate a national or world jamboree. Not capitalized unless in the title of a specific jamboree, as: "1993 National Scout Jamboree" or "19th World Scout Jamboree." The BSA has a national jamboree every four years. See "contingent" regarding the use of the word to describe Scouting groups attending a jamboree.

[edit] Category name formatting

Hi, I Noticed your work on all the Holland America ship articles in formatting their names in the categories. You may already be aware, but you can use {{DEFAULTSORT:Insert preferred name here}} which will automatically format the names of all the categories to whatever your "Insert pereferred name here" is.

Hope that helps!

[edit] Orphaned non-free image (Image:Goldenprincess.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Goldenprincess.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 08:00, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Replaceable fair use Image:Grandprincess.jpg

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Grandprincess.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 7 days after this notification, per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rettetast 14:46, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image source problem with Image:ACLlogo.jpg

Image Copyright problem

This is an automated message from a robot. You have recently uploaded Image:ACLlogo.jpg. The file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 11:19, 7 September 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. If you believe you received this message in error, please notify the bot's owner. [edit] Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Silversealogo.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Silversealogo.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 22:35, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Cruise ship reviews in question

FYI: I urge you to take a look at WT:SHIPS#Cruise_Ships_and_use_of_review_links. I do not know why you were not notified on your own talk page already - but the cruise ship reviews you inserted are being brought into question as to their appropriateness as well as questions of if you have personal gain in the Adsense account used on that site. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 01:51, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

Splamo: I am glad that someone notified you of this discussion. It is also taking place at Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard#Potential_Sneaky_spam.3F. I am familiar with your work (and I see I posted once before to your page). I personally have no doubt that it was in good faith and proper, but others unfortunately are not familiar with it and perhaps have not fully reviewed it or looked at your userpage and history of valuable contributions to this project. In any event it might be a good idea for you to answer at both of these locations in order to allay any doubts. Regards, Kablammo (talk) 13:32, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
I just came across your comment on the noticeboard. You did nothing wrong. You started or improved a lot of articles with the best source of information to you at the time. Much later someone came along and thought the source was spam; it was not, and it does not appear that anyone agreed with that suspicion. In the meantime a lot of links were deleted. Now future editors will have to add them back.
Keep up your good work. Regards, Kablammo (talk) 01:13, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Cruise West and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 00:29, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Spirit of Oceanus

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Spirit of Oceanus, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you agree with the deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add {{db-author}} to the top of Spirit of Oceanus. [edit] Disputed fair use rationale for Image:RSSC.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:RSSC.jpg.

Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 03:53, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
