Shoulder pads (fashion)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Shoulder pads are a type of padding sometimes used in clothing to give the wearer the illusion of less sloping shoulders. Shoulder pads are often used in formal suits and corporate clothing styles.

[edit] 20th century

They originally became popular in the 1940's after the actress, Joan Crawford, began wearing them in her movies. They eventually disappeared, except in formal wear, until the 1980's when the actresses of the hit tv show, Dynasty, began to wear them. This led to the very frequent use of shoulderpads in men's and woman's fashion. The pads became bigger as time went by and they became a must for some women in the late 1980's. They added to power dressing representing status for women in business, law and positions of authority. Many woman began to hate the shoulder pads in their clothes because by the end of the 80's the pads had become outsize. By the early 1990's designers decided it was time to drop the pads and by 1994 the large shoulder pads had disappeared almost completely.

[edit] Revival

In 2007, shoulder pads reappeared in many fashion shows and are believed to be making a comeback.
