Premier League 2008-09

The 2008–09 Premier League season (known as the Barclays Premier League for sponsorship reasons) will be the seventeenth since its establishment. Manchester United are the defending champions, having won their tenth Premier League title on the final day of the previous season. The campaign – the fixtures for which will be announced on 16 June – [1] will begin on Saturday 16 August 2008, and will end in May 2009. A total of 20 teams will contest the league, 17 of which will have contested in the 2007-08 season, and three of which will have been promoted from the Football League Championship. Starting with this season, clubs will now be allowed to name seven substitutes on the bench instead of five.[2]

More about European qualification:
a. The 6th place will qualify to UEFA Cup fourth qualifying round if the FA Cup's finalists end 5th or higher;
b. The 7th place will qualify to UEFA Cup third qualifying round if the FA Cup's finalists and the League Cup's winner end 5th or higher;
c. A further place in the UEFA Cup is available via the Fair Play initiative. If the Premiership has the highest Fair Play ranking in Europe, then the highest ranked team in the Premiership Fair Play standings not already qualified for Europe will automatically qualify for the UEFA Cup First Qualifying Round. If the Premiership has an average Fair Play score of 8 or greater, then it will be placed in a drawing with the other leagues with an average Fair Play score of 8 or greater, and 2 leagues will be selected at random, with the highest ranked teams from those leagues not already qualified for Europe will receive the last two spots in the UEFA Cup First Qualifying Round.

Arsenal Nike Emirates New modified home kit, revealed on June 9, with thick white 'streak' going down either side of the shirt, rather than the traditional all-white sleeves.[3] Also have a new away kit, rumoured to be yellow and blue[4], to be revealed on July 14,[3] with the current white away kit becoming the third kit.
Aston Villa Nike Acorns Children's Hospice Villa will forgo sponsorship (valued at an estimated ₤2 million) replacing 32Red internet casino with Acorns Children's Hospice.[5]
Blackburn Rovers Umbro Crown Paints Bet 24 is replaced as kit sponsors.[6][7]
Bolton Wanderers Reebok Reebok New home and away shirt
Chelsea adidas Samsung Korean electronics company sponsoring as a whole instead of mobile phone division. New home kit has a white collar with yellow trim on the collar and sleeves. Chelsea will have a new away kit, rumoured to be yellow with blue trim and a new third kit, rumoured to be black with white trim.
Everton Umbro Chang New home kit unveiled June 5th. New white, black and silver away kit. Third kit rumored to be flourecent yellow, a-la Chelsea in 2007/2008.
Fulham Nike LG New home kit with plain white shirts and black trim on the collar and sleeves.[8]
Hull City Umbro Karoo & Kingston Communications New flint away kit with amber trim. Home shirt set to change to stripes.[9]
Liverpool adidas Carlsberg New red home kit debuted in their final home game of the 07-08 season. They will also have a new away kit, rumoured to be grey with red trim and a new third kit, rumoured to be green.
Manchester City le coq sportif Thomas Cook.com or rumoured to be Singha Beer. New home and away shirt, also new third (European) shirt.
Manchester United Nike AIG New away kit to be released in July rumoured to be white in colour have blue trim.[10] A new third kit is due to be released in September[11].
Middlesbrough Erreà Garmin New home kit sees the return of the white chestband and white trim down the sides, this time in a swoosh pattern.[12] The shirt debuted in their final game of the 07-08 season.
Newcastle United adidas Northern Rock New away shirt TBA.
Portsmouth Canterbury Oki New home and away kits with a new club crest[13]. They debuted the new white away kit[14] in the final home game of the 07-08 season.
Stoke City le coq sportif Britannia Building Society New design with wider striping on the home shirts[15]. New away shirt rumoured to be yellow[16].
Sunderland Umbro Boylesports.com A slightly tweaked shirt design and the traditional red socks after an 11 year absence replacing black[17]. The new away shirt will be black and blue stripes[18] with last seasons away shirt becoming the third shirt, there will also be a lime green goalkeepers shirt with grey shorts[19].
Tottenham Hotspur Puma Mansion.com Casino & Poker Spurs have three new kits - the home kit has the traditional navy blue shorts replacing last season's white shorts, the away kit is light blue and the third kit is all black. They debuted the home kit, with more navy trim on the shirt than in recent seasons, in their final game of the 07-08 season.
West Bromwich Albion Umbro TBA T-Mobile exits as kit sponsors.[20][21]
West Ham United Umbro XL.com Holidays New light blue away kit.[22]
Wigan Athletic Champion JJB Sports New club crest, new JJB logo and new kit sponsors (Champion). Blue and white stripes.[23][24]

In addition, Nike will provide a new match ball based on their T90 Catalyst model for the 2008-09 campaign.
