2008 FA Community Shield

The 2008 FA Community Shield is a football match due to be played at Wembley Stadium on August 10, 2008 as the 'curtain-raiser' to the 2008-09 English football season. [1] It will be played between the Premier League 2007-08 champions Manchester United and the FA Cup 2007-08 champions Portsmouth. The two teams are also due to play each other prior to the Community Shield in a pre-season friendly match in Nigeria in July 2008. [2] [3] This match will also be the first time since 1996 that a team outside the big four has competed in the competition.
The 2008 Community Shield will be Portsmouth's third, and their first since 1949; both teams have each won their previous Community Shield matches. Manchester United will be looking to win a second consecutive title and extend their record number of victories to seventeen.
