[edit] Route description

Route 439 begins at a traffic light with Union County Route 616 in Elizabeth just after the interchange off of Interstate 278.[1] County Route 623A comes soon afterward. Route 439 becomes a divided highway and intersects at a circle with U.S. Routes 1-9. Route 439 merges back together, intersecting with several county and local maintained routes. New Jersey Route 27 intersects at 1.30 miles just south of the town border. Route 439 intersects with more local, county and state roads, including New Jersey Route 28 and New Jersey Route 82 before coming to an end at Route 27.[1]

[edit] History

Route 439 originated as New Jersey Route 28 south of the current Route 28 and New Jersey Route S24 north of there. In the 1953 renumbering, the route was renumbered 439.[2] The number was chosen to match the now-defunct New York State Route 439, which went across Staten Island. Route 439 in New York was removed in 1972.[3]
