[edit] Production
This is a fictional show created by Matt Schnoor and Alex Shafer and was never actually aired. The current episodes are written solely by Matt Schnoor and edited by Alex Shafer. The current episodes are out of order. Pilot (CB-100) was the first written, but Night In (CB-101) was written to be the season finale. The Coup (CB-103) and Bad Management (CB-104) were written next but were scheduled to “air” as the 11th and 12th episodes. Although the episodes are written out of order, continuity is considered greatly as Matt Schnoor was aware the episodes would air out of order. The show takes place in the fictional bar “Calabar’s” in Kalamazoo, Michigan. “Calabar’s” is based on “Old Burdick’s” the actual restaurant located in the Radisson Plaza Hotel in Kalamazoo. Exterior shots are actually from Kalamazoo and of the real Radisson. The inside of the restaurant was built as a set and is actually nothing like the real bar.
[edit] Premise
The show stars Matt Schnoor as Matt Adams (Matt Schnoor), a college dropout and bartender at Calabar’s restaurant and bar. Alongside him is his best friend since college, Alex Roosevelt (Alex Shafer), another bartender. Matt has recently broken up with his girlfriend, Alison, and is being sought after by Katie Appleton (Katie Appleton). Alex’s central love interest is the hostess, Angie Spencer (Angie Spencer), who is dating a cook, Edgar Burton (Edgar Burton). Apart from their relationships, the show focuses primarily on Matt and Alex dealing with their idiot co-worker and waiter, Brandon Filmore (Brandon Filmore), and their apparently incompetent boss, Zack Hoover (Zack Hoover).
[edit] Characters
- Main Article: Characters from Calabar's
Matt Schnoor and Alex Shafer, based on characters in their actual lives, created the characters of the show. In an interview with Matt, he explained the influence of the characters: “Alex and I were based loosely on ourselves, only in much cooler, more attractive forms. Katie was based on a girl in my life I actually had a big crush on, named Katie. Their personalities varied slightly, but the idea of her being a central love interest was from my life. The Brandon character was based on two people. I worked at McDonald’s with a kid named Nick, who always whined about everything and was too lazy to work. He was originally based on a kid Alex and I both know, named Brandon, but as I was writing, he became much more like Nick. Zack was based off another person Alex and I knew named Zack. Zack was this seemingly metrosexual guy who we believed played it off as if he were gay in order to attract women, which sadly worked. The character became less and less like Zack as the series went on. Apart from that, none of the other characters were really based on anyone we knew. Some of the minor characters were based on minor people in my life. For example, Tim, Zack’s boss was supposed to be modeled after my boss’s boss at McDonald’s, and Erin, one of the cooks was loosely based off one of my managers.”
[edit] Main Characters
- Matt Adams (Matt Schnoor): Matt was born June 17, 1982, is a graduate of Mattawan High School in the class of 2000. He attended Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo where he met his fellow bartender, Alex Roosevelt. Before dropping out, Matt had planned on majoring in psychology and becoming a practicing psychiatrist. After failing a general education political science class with Alex, they both dropped out and took bartending courses and got jobs at the restaurant “Calabar’s” in the Radisson Plaza Hotel in downtown Kalamazoo. Matt has recently broken up with his girlfriend Alison, an ex-waitress, and is trying to get over it, with some help from Katie, who has a “crush” on him. Matt does admit that he wouldn’t be surprised if he and Katie were dating by Thanksgiving. Matt has partial intentions of returning to school, but makes no real attempt to attain his degree.
- Alex Roosevelt (Alex Shafer): Alex was born November 18, 1982, is a graduate of Hart High School in the class of 2000. He attended Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo where he met his fellow bartender, Matt Adams. Before dropping out, Alex had planned on majoring in architecture and having his own architecture firm. Unfortunately, after two years into college, Alex found out Western does not have an architecture major and after failing a general education political science course with Matt, they both dropped out and took bartending courses. He and Matt both got jobs at “Calabar’s” where they have worked the past five years. Alex is focused on the hostess, Angie, but she is already taken by one of the cooks, Ed Burton. Bet $75 Matt and Katie would be together by Thanksgiving.
- Brandon Filmore: Brandon was born March 24, 1988, grew up in San Diego, California and moved to Kalamazoo to attend Western Michigan University as a music major. After his parents cut him off financially, he is forced to get a job as a waiter at Calabar’s. He has been working at Calabar’s for a year. He hopes to be a singer someday, but is seemingly unsuccessful. He is not a hard worker as he tends to believe he is above everyone else there, something the rest of the crew doesn’t allow him to believe.
- Katie Appleton: Katie was born July 13, 1984, grew up in Kalamazoo, attending Kalamazoo Central High School and went to Western Michigan University and got her bachelor’s degree in psychology. She convinced herself she would go to graduates school to become a psychologist, but ended up not applying and stayed with her job as a waitress at Calabar’s.
- Angie Spencer: Angie was born April 12, 1985 is the hostess at Calabar’s, and has been for eight years.
- Ryan Walker (Ryan Sensenbrenner): Ryan was born January 21, 1977, is a web designer for a local firm. He enjoys his job, but finds it highly stressful which is why he frequents the bar. He designed the website for it ten years prior and ended up becoming a customer a couple years later. Has been a customer over six years. Typically comes into the bar around 5:30 and leaves at 2. Bet $100 Matt and Katie would be together by Christmas.
[edit] Supporting Characters
- Zack Hoover: Zack is the manager of “Calabar’s”. When the series begins, he appears as a narcissist and an incompetent manager. He was seemingly disliked by most of the other characters, especially after he suspends Matt for throwing out a customer who threw soup on Katie. Zack proves to be decent at his job and a decent human being, but later becomes somewhat of a womanizer.
- Edgar Burton: Edgar is a cook for Calabar’s and the boyfriend of the hostess, Angie. Edgar is a mislead person. Although he has a good heart and a good head on his shoulders, he doesn’t seem to have a grasp on reality when it comes to his relationship with Angie. He seems to take her for granted by doing things like spending time with friends rather than her. He is also known to have quite a temper.
- Sebastian Mitchell: Sebastian is the kitchen manager of Calabar’s.
- Paige Taylor: Paige is an assertive waitress who works around the same time as the main cast.
- Larry and Lloyd Duncan: Larry and Lloyd are twin brothers who work in the kitchen. They are both immature and moronic.
- Erin Wallace: Erin is the only female cook, and is able to handle working with the boys as she is a very strong confident woman. She works the opening shift.
- Megan Bukowski and Sophie King: Waitresses at Calabar’s.
- John Franklin and Charles Stuart: Bartenders at Calabar’s.
- Tim Stephens: Tim is Zack’s boss, the owner of the entire hotel. He is a confident but insincere person, often giving patronizing vibes and disliked by the crew and Zack alike.

[edit] Season One Details
Creator Matt Schnoor originally wrote four episodes as a sample of the content of what the show would be about. He wrote "Pilot" first, followed by "Night In". He then wrote the two-part episode "The Coup"/"Bad Management". When the episodes were written, continuity was not taken into account as Schnoor assumed the episodes would be aired out of order anyway. Sure enough, the producers agreed in May 2008 to make "Night In" the season finale, even though it was over a year away. "The Coup"/"Bad Management" were separated into two episodes and will air over a two-week period, sometime in early 2009. During the production of the second episode "Interim Bartender", seventeen more episodes were ordered, for a total of 22 episodes in the season.

[edit] Future Plans
Creator, writer and executive producer Matt Schnoor has many ideas in the works for the show. "Since this is just the first season, we are primarily focusing on allowing the audience to get to know the characters. If we feel this has been done appropriately, we hope to expand the restaurant and introduce new characters and customers, all based on people I've met in my life. It's been difficult writing all these stories myself, but I am very eager to see how far we can take this show."
In an interview on June 2, 2008, Matt also commented "The writers have been able to come up with some great ideas, and although I'm not going to reveal any of them, I can tell you that we have come up with several story arcs that will be starting by the end of the first season and will last at least through the second."
