Matt Schnoor and Alex Shafer, based on characters in their actual lives, created the characters of the show. In an interview with Matt, he explained the influence of the characters: “Alex and I were based loosely on ourselves, only in much cooler, more attractive forms. Katie was based on a girl in my life I actually had a big crush on, named Katie. Their personalities varied slightly, but the idea of her being a central love interest was from my life. The Brandon character was based on two people. I worked at McDonald’s with a kid named Nick, who always whined about everything and was too lazy to work. He was originally based on a kid Alex and I both know, named Brandon, but as I was writing, he became much more like Nick. Zack was based off another person Alex and I knew named Zack. Zack was this seemingly metrosexual guy who we believed played it off as if he were gay in order to attract women, which sadly worked. The character became less and less like Zack as the series went on. Apart from that, none of the other characters were really based on anyone we knew. Some of the minor characters were based on minor people in my life. For example, Tim, Zack’s boss was supposed to be modeled after my boss’s boss at McDonald’s, and Erin, one of the cooks was loosely based off one of my managers.”

  • Matt Adams (June 17, 1982, age 25) Matt is a graduate of Mattawan High School in the class of 2000. He attended Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo where he met his fellow bartender, Alex Roosevelt. Before dropping out, Matt had planned on majoring in psychology and becoming a practicing psychiatrist. After failing a general education political science class with Alex, they both dropped out and took bartending courses and got jobs at the restaurant “Calabar’s” in the Radisson Plaza Hotel in downtown Kalamazoo. Matt has recently broken up with his girlfriend Alison, an ex-waitress, and is trying to get over it. He started working at Calabar's in October of 2001.
  • Alex Roosevelt (November 18, 1982, age 25) Alex is a graduate of Hart High School in the class of 2000. He attended Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo where he met his fellow bartender, Matt Adams. Before dropping out, Alex had planned on majoring in architecture and having his own architecture firm. Unfortunately, after two years into college, Alex found out Western does not have an architecture major and after failing a general education political science course with Matt, they both dropped out and took bartending courses. He and Matt both got jobs at “Calabar’s” where they have worked the past five years. He started working at Calabar's in October of 2001.
  • Brandon Filmore: (March 24, 1988, age 20) Brandon grew up in San Diego, California and moved to Kalamazoo to attend Western Michigan University as a music major. After his parents cut him off financially, he was forced to get a job as a waiter at Calabar’s. He has been working at Calabar’s for a year. He hopes to be a singer someday, but is seemingly unsuccessful. He is not a hard worker as he tends to believe he is above everyone else there, something the rest of the crew doesn’t allow him to believe. He started working at Calabar's in September of 2007.
  • Katie Appleton: (July 13, 1984, age 23) Katie grew up in Kalamazoo, attending Kalamazoo Central High School. She attended Western Michigan University and graduated with a degree in communications, which she regrets now as she only chose it so she could get a degree. After running out of money for booze, she got a job as a waitress to make extra funds. Once she graduated, she realized she couldn't find a job and kept her job at Calabar's. She has now gotten sober and is trying to go back to school to get a masters degree in something more worthwhile. She started working at Calabar's in January of 2004.
  • Angie Spencer: (April 12, 1985, age 23) Angie is the hostess at Calabar’s. She started when she was sixteen and has kept the job through college as it has been ultra convenient for her. Although she is very smart, holding a political science degree and pursuing law school, she continues to date her boyfriend, Edgar, who continually holds her back. She started working at Calabar's in April of 2001.
  • Ryan Walker: (January 21, 1977, age 31) Ryan is a web designer for a local firm. He enjoys the job he has as it is very lenient. He is allowed to come and go as he pleases. Unfortunately, he takes advantage of this and ends up not finishing his work. He came to Calabar's first in 2002 when he was put in charge of creating a website for the bar. He sat at the bar for a few days to figure out how to describe the bar and ended up staying.

  • Zack Hoover: Zack was born on December 15, 1978. He is the manager of “Calabar’s”. His uncle is the owner of the bar, and the CEO of the company that owns it. He is the fourth person in his family to manage the bar. He makes many foolish decisions regarding the bar, most of which are done for his own personal gain or comfort. He enjoys playing Halloween jokes on his fellow employees, which at many times can be very inappropriate. He first started as an intern at the bar in 1992, and became the manager in 2001.
  • Edgar Burton: Edgar was born on March 19, 1980. He is a cook for Calabar’s and the boyfriend of the hostess, Angie. He seems to take her for granted by doing things like spending time with friends rather than her. He is also known to have quite a temper.
  • Sebastian Mitchell: Sebastian was born in 1962, and is the oldest employee at Calabar's. Sebastian is the kitchen manager of Calabar’s.
  • Paige Taylor: Paige was born in 1987 and is a waitress during the night shift. Although she has a good head on her shoulders, when she comes in contact with alcohol, she makes many foolish mistakes.
  • Megan Bukowski: Born in 1980, she is a waitress at Calabar's. She is very shy and timid, but is apparently the only one Zack trusts, supposedly because she is the only one who hasn't annoyed him.
  • Larry and Lloyd Duncan: Born in 1985, Larry and Lloyd are twin brothers who work in the kitchen. They are both immature and moronic. Lloyd seems to have a problem with Matt.
  • John Franklin: Born in 1974, John is a part-time bartender at Calabar's. He was originally hired and fired in 1992, but rehired in 2001.
  • Sophie King: Born in 1985, Sophie is a waitresses at Calabar’s.
  • Charles Stuart: Charles was born in 1983 and is a bartenders at Calabar’s.
  • Erin Wallace: Born in 1982, Erin is the only female cook, and is able to handle working with the boys as she is a very strong confident woman. She works the opening shift. She believes Zack to be a bad manager and often times feels like she wants to take his job.
  • Chris Walker: Born in 1992, he is the bastard son of Ryan Walker. Ryan got his mother pregnant at a party and up until recently, neither Ryan or Chris knew who each other were. Chris's mother killed herself after dealing with postpartum depression and Chris was taken in by a foster home. He finally sought out his father, who he now lives with. Chris does not appreciate his father's choices in life, such as spending all of his time at the bar, or blowing off his work. Chris is very down to earth, and does not drink, smoke, do drugs, etc. However, his father does not believe him. He aspires to be a writer.
  • Tim Stephens IV: Tim is Zack’s boss and uncle, the owner of the entire hotel. He is a confident but insincere person, often giving patronizing vibes and disliked by the crew and Zack alike.
