List of universities in Sweden
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This article contains a list of Swedish universities and university colleges is based on the Higher Education Ordinance of 1993 (as amended until January 2006).
All higher education in Sweden is publicly funded, but the listing also includes the officially recognized independent higher education institutions that operate under contract with the Swedish Ministry of Education, Research and Culture. Independent programme providers are not included.

[edit] University or University College
University colleges or högskola conduct important research, but their main operations are within education. This includes the awarding of the Swedish version of the Bachelor's and Master's degrees, as well as the corresponding professional degrees.
Upon application to the Government and following recommendation by the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education, a university college may, however, be vested with a particular academic discipline (vetenskapsområde). This includes increased state funding for research (fakultetsanslag) as well as the right to offer postgraduate programmes in the specific field, including the awarding of PhD degrees.
University qualities are not defined in law or ordinance, but have traditionally included the existence of at least four faculties, considerable undergraduate education as well as an important research activity and quaternary education. Lately, this has changed, as three university colleges were given the name of university in 1999 together with a fourth college in 2005.
[edit] Universities
In order of precedence, based on their creation as universities. The year they received status as university is shown in brackets. However all universities, except those in Uppsala, Greifswald, Tartu, Turku and Lund, were founded as university colleges. The universities in Tartu and Turku were created when these cities were Swedish but are located in present-day, Estonia and Finland, respectively – the later now in Helsinki. The university in Greifswald was founded in 1456 but did not become Swedish until 1631 and remained Swedish until 1815 when it became part of Prussia.
The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences was formed during the Higher Education Reform of 1977, thus meriting a more prominent position amongst its peers. However, because it sorts under the Ministry of Agriculture, it is traditionally placed last in the list. As independent institutions are not mentioned in the Higher Education Ordinance, they take no particular place in the university order of precedence. It is worth mentioning that the order of precedence does not correspond to academic ranking of the institutions, to which both Chalmers University of Technology and the Stockholm School of Economics bear excellent testimony.
