[edit] Universities of Applied Sciences

Universities of Applied Sciences or hogeschool conduct applied research, but their focus is much more towards professional education compared to University. Their education scheme includes the awarding of the Bachelor's and Master's degrees.

This institution of tertiary education in the Netherlands is called the hogeschool. While the literal translation is "high school", the institutes are actually equal to universities of applied sciences. They can also be compared with colleges, polytechnics, and universities of applied arts. Hogescholen are not allowed to be called universiteit in the Dutch language. In international context, the phrase "University of Applied Science" is to be used for the majority of these schools, as suggested by the Dutch Minister of Education in early 2008. [3] Although this name will be adopted for the vast majority of Hogescholen, some specific exeptions have been made for example (tertiary) Art schools, and Schools of Education. These schools be allowed to use an internationally recognisable name.
