University of applied sciences

University of Applied Sciences is a university type, originated in the German higher educational system. It refers to:

  • Fachhochschule, a German or Austrian institution of academic higher education, including undergraduate and postgraduate education. More recently also shorter named Hochschule.
  • Fachhochschule or Haute École Spécialisée, as above, in Switzerland.
  • Ammattikorkeakoulu, a Finnish institution of higher education.
  • The usual French term is École Supérieure.
