[edit] Image:FoxBassoon.jpg

Hmm. Indeed, I didn't stop down enough on the left one. I'm not quite sure how I goofed it up, nor why I didn't retake it at the time. Alas, I don't have access to that instrument anymore.

Not sure about the cut comment: They were shot over a lightscreen, not cut out.. I think I see what you're talking about, and it's actually a result of the highlights on the metal ring being seriously clipped. In any case, thanks for your comments. They are spot on... Oh well. I took the picture over a year and a half ago and I always thought it was funny that it wasn't featured: I've sold this image under alternative non-exclusive non-copyleft licenses several times for quite a bit of money. :) --Gmaxwell 00:33, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Translation help requested

Would you be willing to translate a very short passage from Swedish to English? I am trying to resolve a dispute with another editor. If you don't want to get involved, that's fine, but please let me know one way or the other. It's about 150-200 words. Thank you for your help. Tusen takk. I know, that's Norsk, but I don't know any Swedish.... :) Cbdorsett 07:54, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks, Janke. Here's the text:

<<

Imitationer

>>

After you have finished, I'll have another translator look at it. If the text looks useful, that second person's endorsement will be sufficient to keep you out of the dispute. Thank you for your help. Cbdorsett 04:10, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

Hi Janke,

Just to let you know that the Featured Picture Image:Duhauron1877.jpg is due to make an appearance as Picture of the Day on March 8, 2007. If you get a chance, you can check and improve the caption at Template:POTD/2007-03-08. howcheng {chat} 17:46, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] FPCs

thanks for your comments -yes they were taken with a micro camera I wish I could ahve had a better camera -even if the quality then is not perfect the contrast in the Bristol channel pic with the rainbow is atmospheric. Featured pictures have to meet particularly very high standards then. I can see you have experience in this field. All the best Ernst Stavro Blofeld 17:17, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Helicon Filter

Hi Janke. You put an advertisement tag on the Licenses section in the Helicon Filter article. I'll admit that I struggled to try to make this as least like an ad as I could while still containing all the important information, and I think it is right now ok. But information on the pricing for this program should be included. Do you have any suggestions on how to include this information without it looking at all like an ad? If you do, that would be great, but if not, I don't think the tag is appropriate. Thanks. Cheers, Althepal 20:22, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

Hi from Adrian, here's my reply to your question on my Talk Page. I think the Helicon article is acceptable, once the Licence and Price advertising stuff, and the Release History, is removed (both of which I have done). The pricing material is inappropriate because it will vary shop to shop, or country to country and, in any case, pricing info is against WP policy (we don't give Zoo admission prices for example). I have a deep objection to the multiscreen Release History so I've removed it again (and from the Photoshop entry) On the positive side, I'm impressed that shortcomings of the program are honestly mentioned - Adrian Pingstone 20:59, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
I'm just curious, what guideline states that pricing information should not be included in Wikipedia? It is very prevalent, such as in the Comparison of raster graphics editors and many other articles I've seen. Anyhow, the product is only sold directly from Helicon Soft, so there is no variation. [edit] FPC

"I did give some harsh (but accurate, IMO) comments on your sunset picture, but remember, we're trying to get the very best images featured. Keep nominating, one day you may succeed! Suggestion: To get the resolution and quality to pass the hard test for FP, you must avoid high jpg compression (in the sunset pic, there were very visible square blocks in the shadow area - that's a no-no), and, if the original, but very large picture isn't razor sharp, you might downsample it a bit, but still keep it well over 1000 px wide. Stitching several frames into a panorama is a good way of getting better resolution... (See, criticism can be constructive, too... ;-) FYI: I have nominated many of my own pics, but in a year and a half, only two have made FP.) Greetings, --Janke | Talk 19:15, 22 February 2007 (UTC)"

[edit] Talk:Swedish people

We are having some problems there with finlandssvensk-issues. Should Swedish-speaking Finns be taken out of both Swedes and Finns and then discuss them in their own article? However, removing them from Finns would be bad in my opinion. [edit] Image:Smartcard.JPG

Thanks for uploading Image:Smartcard.JPG. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Angr 16:33, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

I think whoever tagged the image as replaceable didn't realize you had taken that photograph yourself. Looking through the history I saw that you originally tagged it correctly as GFDL-self, but that got removed in a piece of vandalism, and then other people came along and assumed it must be somehow a "fair use" image. I just reverted to your original licensing, but you may want to keep it and any other images you've uploaded on your watchlist to make sure they don't get vandalized. —Angr 09:16, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Glossy Ibis FPC

Hi Janke - Despite your plea, I went ahead and masked out the glossy ibis FP nom and blurred the background (and desaturated it a bit). Maybe it will meet your standard? Take another peak at the nomination if you like. Debivort 22:48, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Your opinion, and your permission

Hi Janke, just thought I would float an idea by you. I'm looking at cleaning up the WP:FP? "examples of image problems" section, which I think would benefit from sectioning according to the different criteria, with pictoral examples arranged a little more formally than they are at present. You posted a link to this image on the talk page, along with the "reality" shot it corresponds to, and I think it is the ideal example for a modified criterion 6. Basically #6 would read,

6. Is accurate. It is supported by facts in the article or references cited on the image page. Remember that photographs are a form of primary source, so care should always be taken to ensure that images are faithful reproductions of their main subject (see xample and also criterion 10 below).

I'm going to propose all this first anyway - I think criterion 6 should specifically warn against deliberate distortion of accurate representations of reality, just like your trains trick! I'd like to know what you think of the idea, first of all, but also wondered if you would mind if those images were uploaded for the purpose. Cheers, mikaultalk 20:52, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

  • Thanks for the offer; a small composite shot would be fine, even ideal. I'm thinking of 300px examples which in some cases (like this) don't need to be thumbs. I'll most likely post up an sample example (so to speak) which you could refer to for actual dimensions. All I need now is time! Hands very full IRL at the moment :o/ Best wishes, mikaultalk 20:54, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Source of Image:Locotypes.gif?

I noticed that Image:Locotypes.gif says that it was scanned from a 1919 book, but it doesn't say which 1919 book. Since there's no text in the original image, it's pretty hard to search for. Do you have the source information? It was uploaded more than a year and a half ago, so you may have to go digging a bit. I'm going to hold off on using {{nsd}} for now, but we really should have more source than "1919 book" (which we're lucky to have, given that people upload it to Commons with a to-be-deleted en.wiki image description page listed as the source.) grendel|khan 06:28, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

I have added the requested source info. It's from the Finnish 1919 "Tietosanakirja" ("Encyclopedia"), and due to its age, it's PD. Greetings, --Janke | Talk 14:14, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
Thanks! I see that Finland has publication+70 copyright for unsigned works (which, I take it, illustrations in the encyclopedia are), so, public domain. Excellent! grendel|khan 03:27, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:TVscreen.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. [edit] re: Copyvio TLE image

Hi,

Janke, did you look at the page history? When I uploaded the image, I provided the required fair use rationale and detailed description. On May 28th, User:Delenda26 changed the copyright statement. I did not have the image on my watchlist, and thus did not know about the change until you alerted me to it just now. If you look at the image description page now, you will see that I have restored the fair use rationale, as it does illustrate an important point on an article. I will ask this user to see if they can provide proof that they are the copyright owner. In future, I would appreciate it if you would research this more throughly before assuming it's a copyright vio. Happy editing, Green451 15:27, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

  • Thanks for your note. Please note that the fair use can only be allowed in an article dealing with the film itself. Thus, using the image in Rotoscoping is not allowed. There have been other, similar instances where fair use is allowed in one article, but not in another. Please see WP:Fair Use for details. --Janke | Talk 07:33, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Last finnish coins.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Last finnish coins.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion.
