[edit] Election

I agree there should be links to the various partys displayed, I did not knownggly remove those links. That's because I did not catch how carefully they linked to NZ parties, rather than the generic term Labor and National. I will try to restore them propertly.

The news article as I encountered it I went to the sources and did see that they were correct. I believe it is informative to clarify that Helen Clark is the incumbent PM and will form her third government. I truly got lost figuring out what the point being made in the reading about the result "reduces the National seats" and Lobor gains two. Until I studied the linked texts carefully. I tried to word it so that Helen Clark is identified with Labor and her next step forming a coalition. This would be completely lost to a non NZ reader.

Please, in everyway I appreciate what wording comes from a reporter on the ground I trust that you will make any changes to my content to meet the reading needs of the unknown to the non NZ. Anyway, I will go to work to get the Wiki links to the partys back it.Kyle Andrew Brown 19:11, 1 October 2005 (UTC)

Thanks. I'm glad that you handled that so quickly. It might not be a bad idea to keep an eye on that IP: 172.193.156.45. Chick Bowen 04:27, 5 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Transclusion

Hi. Since you clearly know what's what I'll spare you the boiler plate {{subst:subst}}. Keep up the good work - brenneman(t)(c) 11:27, 7 October 2005 (UTC)

This friendly reminder appears to be about messages I left on an anon's talk page in December 2004. If that's the last time I forgot to add a subst then I think I'm doing rather well.-gadfium 19:01, 7 October 2005 (UTC)

He's been creating garbage article again (check the deletion log - Sumeet was created and deleted three times in one day). Time for a block? DS 02:07, 10 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] block of Wiki brah

Greetings. I noticed you blocked Wiki brah for offering cocaine on Lucky 6.9's talk page. As disruptive an editor as I think he is, this seems like an insufficient reason to block for so long: more a poor attempt at humor than a legitimate legal concern; I don't think he should be blocked until the RfC he filed is going on, anyhow, whatever its merits may be. Mindspillage (spill yours?) 03:56, 11 October 2005 (UTC)

And I see Redwolf24 unblocked him for the purposes of that RfC, so it's moot. Mindspillage (spill yours?) 04:20, 11 October 2005 (UTC)

I want to thank you anyway for watching my back yet again. We shall be patient regarding our bizarre little friend.  :) - Lucky 6.9 04:49, 11 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Brain Teasers:

Hi, just sending out a friendly notice stating that I have now got brain teasers on my user page. Will post new questions one day after the older ones have been answered. Thanks, Spawn Man 08:41, 11 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] John Rangihau

Nice one. Moriori 06:14, 13 October 2005 (UTC)

Thanks. Prime TV is running a series (Thursday nights) on the most significant 100 New Zealanders in history, and I'm running through and checking that we have articles on them all. Their website is at [[1]. I'll probably create an article on the series tomorrow - just a list of the names as they rank them, with an introductory paragraph on the series - and then any redlinks will be obvious.-gadfium 08:21, 13 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Image no longer in use still linked to NZ Portal

Several weeks ago you used Image:White_Island.jpg in your New Zealand Portal page. I have marked that image for deletion in favor of the lower-resolution version Image:White_Island_n.jpg, but the page for the first image shows that it is linked to your NZ Portal, even though I don't see it in use now. I'm afraid that this will prevent the substitution I want to take place, since I assume images linked to pages won't be deleted. Are you still using it? If so, could you change the link to Image:White_Island_n.jpg? Thank you

JShook | Talk 13:01, 20 October 2005 (UTC)

I don't know why the software thinks the NZ Portal page is still using this image, as it hasn't used it for several weeks. I've looked through all the transcluded subpages, which also aren't using the image, and I've tried purging the page. I've left a note at the images for deletion page.-gadfium 19:15, 20 October 2005 (UTC)

What does notable mean exactly. I'm a published writer and author. I have held offices and leadership positions. I think this more than qualifies.

Hi Cyberjunkie,

Lucky's left a list of his problems on his userpage. I'll handle the North Shore, California first, while you may want to take a look at the rest as well. :)

[edit] User:203.167.171.146

I hope you don't mind but I lengthened the block to 1 week, I didn't do this because it was my user and user talk pages, I did it because death threats even if idle should be taken very seriously. I have also warned him/her that a longer block would follow if he/she didn't shape up. Jtkiefer T | @ | C ----- 05:07, 4 November 2005 (UTC)

No problems with the increased block, but unless we have some evidence that this is a semi-permanent IP address there probably isn't much point in threatening longer blocks. The ISP is Telstra-Clear in New Zealand. If he repeats, it's probably worth lodging a complaint with them.-gadfium 05:45, 4 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Re:Rod Donald

First I've heard of it, but since Alan L. was a Green Party candidate at the election he probably is closer to the pulse on this one. I'll be listening out for radio news headlines in half an hour. Grutness...wha? 00:28, 6 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Rod Donalds death.

You heard it here first! I was given the information from two reliable sources within the Green Party. It happened during the night. No doubt it will be in the evenings news bulletens and tomorrows papers. Is it appropriate to post reliable information on Wikipedia before the media get hold of it? I should probably do a post to Wikinews. Alan Liefting 00:32, 6 November 2005 (UTC)

Very sad news if true. I know I'd like to see Nandor back in parliament, but this is NOT the way for it to happen. One of the rare good guys in politics. Grutness...wha? 00:44, 6 November 2005 (UTC)
I completely agree.-gadfium 00:45, 6 November 2005 (UTC)

I just rang the Green Party's Auckland office and they've confirmed it. They're preparing a press release.-gadfium 01:37, 6 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Ubuntu

Sorry, about the late reply. I have been away from the computer for the last day or so, and didn't get a chance to reply. Firstly, I'll just say that I'm a complete novice when it comes to Linux and have only been using it full-time for about three months. And am currently using XP while at my parents for two months over the summer.

Anyway, I'll give it a go and might be able to help. You should have no problems installing non-K/Ubuntu packages, in fact I don't think you even need to uninstall the old versions, though it may be helpful. The only thing to remember is that when you upgrade, you may run into issues if you have uninstalled something that is part of the base package and then forced to reinstall it again.

I can't really help you with the AMD v. i386 question. I run i386, so I'm not sure what happens regarding running i386 compiled under AMD. You may want to try the Ubuntu Forums which are a great help for most problems (and often people have already asked so searching can lead to an anwser). [edit] Culture of New Zealand

Re that last rv of your I've put this text on the discussion page: "Close to the pole?! Yes, New Zealand is close to the South Pole, compared to say Indonesia, but a quick look at http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y228/debnjohn/NZandEurope.jpg will show that it's nowhere as close as you might think. The prob is not Mercators Projection, but the fact that in examples like http://graphicmaps.com/webimage/world/flata.htm almost 2/3rds of the image is above the equator, and only 1/3 below.". My feeling is that what you rv'd should actaully be gone.

[edit] 1981 Springbok Tour

Thanks for spelling and POV corrections (okay, my editorialisng about Muldoon and Rogernomics out of order:-). You've definitely improved the article, I'm just going to leave it alone.

[edit] North Island Flag

Just because you have not known about the flag concept does not mean it does not exist. It does in a few online publications. After all, most New Zealanders don't know that the North Island was also called New Munster, but not knowing that does not make it any less real. Expatkiwi

As you say, the flag is unofficial, and I think you are agreeing that it is not widely known. That makes it unsuitable for the North Island article, but I have no problems with it being on the Unofficial Flags article.-gadfium 05:17, 22 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Admin Lucky 6.9 and New Page Patrol

I am contacting you regarding Admin Lucky 6.9 because you seem to know and have a positive working relationship with him/her.

Lucky 6.9 is apparently on the New Page Patrol.

I have personally had two very bad experiences with Lucky 6.9 surrounding the inappropriate deletion of new articles I created. It is very apparent from the activity on his Talk: page that he is upsetting scores of other editors by jumping the gun on deletion.

Today was the straw that broke the camel's back for me.

I created the article Dub Is a Weapon about a Brooklyn, New York based band. I created the article, wikilinked to the words reggae and dub, created an external links section, linked to their website and left a US-band-stub on the article.

I then saved the article, got up, went to the bathroom and relieved my bladder. The time was 20:57.

I sat down again at the keyboard to work on the article again and it was deleted, by Lucky 6.9, the time of deletion on the article was 20:58.

This is the second time that he has done this to MY articles. When I have complained - and yes, noted that I would like to raise the issue of whether or not he is abusing his adminship - he has threatened me. Today's threat (copied from my User page):

You had better take a look at no personal attacks. If you can't write anything beyond a single sentence, don't write anything at all. If you continue to threaten me, I'll block you from editing so fast your head will spin. Fix your article and leave it be. - Lucky 6.9 02:12, 26 November 2005 (UTC)

I don't think that this is the attitude an administrator should be taking with an editor after deleting his 1 minute old article.

Regardless of whether or not I follow through on challenging his adminship, there is no question whatsoever that he is harming the wikipedia and upsetting many, many legitimate and hard working editors by rushing to delete articles. This is not hyperbole or projection on my part... Take a glance at his Talk page - as well as the comments to his page that he has deleted because they were inflammatory.

I will wait to hear from you before I do anything else regarding this issue.

Thanks and regards, --AStanhope 02:52, 26 November 2005 (UTC)

UPDATE As I was writing the above Lucky 6.9 received yet another complaint on his Talk: page from an editor about his rapid deletions. Lucky then announced on his User page as well as my Talk page that he is "quitting." Please start the ball in motion to have admin privs revoked from his account here so that if/when he returns he will do so as a simple editor without admin privs to abuse. Thanks. --AStanhope 03:01, 26 November 2005 (UTC)

Hi, Gad. Cooling off somewhat. I've replaced my e-mail address. Old one would have been invalid as of Monday anyway. - Lucky 6.9 03:57, 26 November 2005 (UTC)

Thanks. I appreciate the suggestions and the support. It's just that the damned servers are getting so slow; it's all one can do to stem the tide of garbage. - Lucky 6.9 04:08, 26 November 2005 (UTC)

Don't ever think that it's just you standing alone against the tide of garbage. That line of thought is an easy trap to fall into, and its been the downfall of a number of good admins and vandal fighters. If you don't clean it up, someone else will. Try my suggestion of looking at new pages with an offset. The urgency is gone. Does it matter that a few really crappy articles existed on Wikipedia for a few hours? Not at all. Even the character-assassination articles ("John smith is gay!") probably haven't come to the attention of their targets in that time, and I'm sure the target gets far worse abuse in the playground every day anyway.-gadfium 04:16, 26 November 2005 (UTC)
One other unasked for piece of advice: try the tag-and-bag system of speedy deletion. That means that you don't speedy delete anything except the absolute most obvious candidates unless someone else has already put a speedy tag on them. If they haven't, then you put a speedy tag on and let someone else do the deletion. Try doing that for a few articles and see how it feels. You'll still get some people angry because you deleted or tagged their article, but you'll know you're not alone in the world.-gadfium 05:39, 26 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Ok, it's time to get an entry for me then...

[edit] "Logan Kriete" Deletion

I noticed you deleted the content of the page located at "Logan Kriete". Although I am Logan Kriete and often jokingly-refer to myself as "the next Bill Gates", I did't create the page in question that you deleted. [edit] Rangitoto

Hi Gadfium - I've tidied up your Image:Rangitoto.jpg and uploaded it as Image:Rangitoto2.jpg (basically I've straightened up the horizon and improved the brightness). If you think it's an improvement, feel free to replace one with the other! :) Grutness...wha? 09:40, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

Thanks, I've been fiddling with brightness and contrast on more recent photos, but that one is part of the older lot. I'm replaced my version with yours in the Rangitoto article and nominated mine for deletion.-gadfium 17:58, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Tom Neale

[edit] User:Username

Hi, I see you redirected this user's user and talk pages to Wikipedia:Username and Wikipedia:Talk page. May I ask why? This appears to be a normal user.-gadfium 18:22, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

Appeared to me that the username was out of bounds with the Username policy, and aside from that it seems that it will confuse other users, I hope I didn't obstruct anything. εγκυκλοπαίδεια* 22:10, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Category:Golden Raspberry Awards

I notice you created Category:Golden Raspberry Awards, which contains articles whose titles begin with a year. If you have time, could you please go through and make sure the articles are sorted in their respective year (or year-in) parent categories using sortkeys as outlined at Wikipedia:Categorization#Year categories? (Don't forget to start the sortkey with a capital letter.) If you've done this already, thanks and sorry for bugging you about this. I plan to go through a ton of such pages early next year; it would be nice if some of the work were already done... - dcljr (talk) 01:28, 25 December 2005 (UTC)

You said, "I don't think it would be an improvement to use a sort key to put all the articles under "Golden Raspberry" instead of "19xx Golden Raspberry"." Not in Category:Golden Raspberry Awards itself, but in Category:1980, Category:1981, etc. Like I said, if this has already been done, nevermind. - dcljr (talk) 01:40, 25 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Aerial Topdressing

Thanks for the compliment.

Moriori has kindly got Pacific Aerospace to release Image:CRESCO TOP DRESSING.JPG for the PAC Cresco article, so that one is readily available, but not the world's best photo. I will see if I can find some better historic pictures or take something myself. I'll also give the article a warm over.

Two points I'd note in passing - Firstly the article copped some flak from Americans who initially denied aerial topdressing was an NZ invention, though they have accepted spreading a fertiliser is different to spraying a pesticide. I believe their view, which is probably correct, is the invention of crop dusting (in the 1920s) was more significant and someone should do a proper article about it, though no one yet has and I'm not qualified. Secondly that article was intended to be a starting point stub for a description of all topdressing, although no one else has taken up the torch and written about other nations efforts. :-).

Cheers USER:winstonwolfe

Thanks, I'll add that image to the article and put it on my queue to feature. I did see the flak, but that's not my concern - I want a range of decent articles which show the varied nature of articles on Wikipedia relating to New Zealand.-gadfium 23:03, 26 December 2005 (UTC)

P.S. I'm also at Auck uni, give me a yell if you need a hand with anything when you start here. W.W.

Thanks, I've actually been there for five years part time already, so I know my way around mostly. I've done all my stage I papers and one of my stage II papers. I think it will feel quite different being full time.-gadfium 21:52, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Portuguese Communist Party

Thanks for your corrections, I lack grammatical knowledge as I'm not a native English speaker. I've only reverted "the leadership for each structure" to "the responsibles for each structure" as being the responsible for a structure of the PCP is much more like a task that you have, along with the regular duties of membership. Afonso Silva 21:24, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
