Field Hockey at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing will be held over a fourteen day period starting on August 10, and culminating with the medal finals on August 23. All games will be played at the hockey field constructed on the Olympic Green.
[edit] Competition format
Twelve teams will compete in both the men's and women's Olympic hockey tournaments, and the competition will consist of two rounds. In the first round the teams are divided into two pools of six teams, and play follows round robin format where each of the teams plays all the other teams in the pool once. Following this, the top four teams advance to a single elimination round consisting of two semifinal games, and the bronze and gold medal games.
[edit] Qualification
The twelve teams in the Olympic hockey tournaments will qualify through a series of tournaments. China, as the host nation, is guaranteed one automatic entry. Five continental championships will be used to determine 8 or 9 other qualifiers (depending on whether China is also the Asian continental champion). Finally, three Olympic qualification tournaments will be held to determine the last three entrants.
