Cinema of Lithuania

Cinema of Lithuania came into existence in 1930s. During Soviet times there was clearly distinct Lithuanian school in soviet cinematography. As an independent national industry cinema in Lithuania was reborn in the late 1980s with the documentary films by director Arūnas Matelis, and was allowed to develop once Lithuania became independent on March 11, 1990. A small industry, Lithuania has produced about 80 films to date.
