Birmingham, Hall Green is a borough constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election.

[edit] Boundaries

Hall Green looked safe for the Conservatives in the 1980s, but with Birmingham Edgbaston this was the last of the Conservatives’ Birmingham seats lost to Labour in 1997. This was the first time Labour had won the seat since its creation in 1950.

Birmingham, Hall Green is made up of three wards - Billesley, Brandwood and Hall Green. The constituency is a suburban seat south of the city centre on the fringes of Birmingham and bordering Solihull in the east. The number of non-whites (9.3%) is low compared to the rest of the city, as is the number in council homes (25.7%) but both figures are higher than national averages. It contains public parks, open space and numerous tree-lined streets.

One famous landmark is Sarehole Mill, where J. R. R. Tolkien spent his boyhood and which provided the inspiration for The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

Many constituents were employed in the car industry - notably Rover's nearby factories.

[edit] Boundary review

Following their review of parliamentary representation in Birmingham and the West Midlands, the Boundary Commission for England have created a modified version of the Hall Green seat which contains only a third of the the existing constituency. It retains only one of its former wards — Hall Green itself — and adds three new wards, including two from the Sparkbrook and Small Heath constituency which is to be abolished at the next General Election.
