[edit] Pipe sorting

Noticed your edit of Glenn Davis; absolutely no complaint about it, nor any harm done, but to save you needless editing time in the future, the pipe sort is unaffected, alas, by anything after the first word of it. The purpose of the pipe sort is merely to alphabetize him correctly, after which it doesn't care. Thus, thru the marvels of computer stuff, "|Davis" is sufficient to get him listed as "Davis, /remainder of article name/". Notice for example that he still is not listed as Davis, Glenn Woodward in the category lists, for example Category:West Point graduates; it would indeed be nice, rather than the awkward listing as it stands, but I, at least, know of no way of doing that. Best, Bill 18:58, 17 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Okay. No problem. Thanks. -- Bender235 21:21, 17 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Italian-Americans

Can you please help me in understanding how one qualifies as Italian-American? Does that imply that they have citizenship in both Italy and the U.S/Canada? Would it mean that both parents are of Italian ancestry, but a citizen of the U.S. (or vice-versa)? One parent? Or possibly just having a last last name that sounds Italian (or Italian with an American sounding name)? How many generations, or at what percentage of blood relation does it take to still be Italian-American? I am asking because there are no German-American, or Russian-American, or Brazilian-American categories, yet the Italian-American category is quite extensive. Cacophony 04:14, Mar 24, 2005 (UTC)

I guess someone's Italian-American if his family is originally from Italy. But why do you ask me? I didn't create that category, I was just adding people that were missing. -- Bender235 09:03, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Deletion tag removed

Why did you nominate my article Paul Grimes for speedy deletion? I shall remove the tag. Ncik 01 Apr 2005

I just don't see how this person is worth an article. However, if want to keep it, it's ok. -- Bender235 00:51, 1 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Michael Michai Cardinal Kitbunchu

Please use the "move" function if you want to move an article to a new location. If the move isn't possible for whatever reason, please list it on Wikipedia:Requested moves. Moving articles by copy-and-paste is a bad idea, as it destroy the editing history. andy 13:02, 6 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Okay. My bad. Won't happen again. -- Bender235 13:04, 6 Apr 2005 (UTC)
I fixed it already - if any edits by you were lost in the process, please feel free to redo them. andy 13:07, 6 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Lead vs. led

"Lead," the element, rhymes with "led," the past tense and participle of "lead," the verb (which rhymes with "read" and "reed," but not "read" or "red," just to illustrate the perversity of English pronunciation and spelling), but should not be confused with it. So when you are referring to the Rick Barry-led Oaks, please use the correct form. You are not alone in this, but you are a prolific writer, so a word to the wise should help avoid this problem in the future. 24.126.41.116 13:01, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC) aka User:Italo Svevo

Ok, thanks. -- Bender235 13:03, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Change in the purpose of the list of cardinals

You changed this on April 6th to a list of cardinals living now. Where are the others? Michael Hardy 00:22, 9 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] FGrH

I want to thank you for correcting the spelling of this source in the Golden Fleece article. I am curious, how did you find the misspelling? --Canon 16:28, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia Search. I was looking for "FGrHist" etc. That's it. And since I am German, it was easy to see that "... der griechischer Historiker" was wrong. ;-) --Bender235 15:18, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
I think this is an example of a very interesting "invisible hand" process that improves Wikipedia. If you don't mind I have a couple more questions for you as an agent of the "invisible hand." The Golden Fleece article does not actually contain the text "FGrHist," so did you go to the trouble of trying several searches using different key words to locate all references? Or did you just happen upon it while reading the Golden Fleece article? What motivated you to make this link? Did you create the entry for FGrHist?
So right now I'm the object of some sort of scientific study, or what? ;-) I wasn't only looking for "FGrHist", that's why I wrote "etc." behind it. I took "FGrHist", "Jacoby", "Fragmente der griechischen Historiker", and so on, in order to create links on that articles to Die Fragmente der griechischen Historiker. I did create that one. But actually there was already an article on this book, named Fragmente der griechischen Historiker, so some admin merged both articles a few minutes after I created the first one. BTW: Why are you asking me all that stuff? --Bender235 22:56, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
No sceintific study at all. I was just impressed that you had done so much work to find the articles that needed linking up and I was wondering why. Thanks again for doing it. Canon 04:02, 20 January 2006 (UTC)
Sure. That's what Wikipedia is all about. Helping each other to improve the whole project. --Bender235 09:34, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Move of New Atlantis to Nova atlantis

Thanks for thinking of doing this, but English is generally preferred over original titles. Please see Wikipedia:Naming conventions (use English). I have moved it back to its original title. Thanks --Reflex Reaction (talk)• 14:59, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

Okay. I didn't knew the policies in English Wikipedia. In German wikipedia, the original title is prefered. --Bender235 13:24, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks

Hey I appreciate you updating the succession boxes for Ohio State Basketball coaches. Saved me some research time as I plan on writing articles for all of them. -- mmeinhart 17:22, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

No problem. But I'm still not sure about how counting the years a coach has been with the team. For example, Randy Ayers has been coaching the Buckeyes from the 89/90 to the 96/97 season, and O'Brien from 97/98 to 03/04: should we write "Ayers 89-97, O'Brien 97-04" or "Ayers 90-97, O'Brien 98-04"? --Bender235 22:18, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
  • I like it the first way you have it, starting with the year that the coach began and disregarding the season as every college basketball season runs over yearly. -- mmeinhart 22:24, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
Ok. --Bender235 22:55, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
Yeah you're right...by the looks of the info you sent me, it looks like the 2nd way by season is the best way to go. Thanks for the input. mmeinhart 03:08, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] College basketball coaches

Hi there. I just wanted to encourage you while you're making categories for college basketball, to please do two things: (1) follow the naming conventions in Category:College football teams, where we try awfully hard not to use shorthand like "SFC" and "NAU" when the school's abbreviation is not well known (unlike, say, LSU or USC); and (2) link the category to a basketball category, which links to the school category. Check out any of the other categories to see how that's done. As a general rule, we don't create categories unless we have three or four players, but that's been disregarded lots of times. Anyway, thanks!--Mike Selinker 08:10, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

Ok. --Bender235 21:20, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image Tagging Image:Bee.jpg

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Bee.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -SCEhardT 12:41, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Importance ratings

Hello, Though it is hard to quantify this kind of thing, and it is to some extent a subjective judgement, I would suggest that a practice which was adopted throughtout ancient Greece, and which informed art, politics, philosophy, sports, and the military, and which is thought by a number of modern scholars to have been at the root of the "Greek miracle" deserves to be considered as having "top" importance. I am talking about Greek pederasty, of course. Is there some specific reason why you removed that label from the article? Haiduc 20:53, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

I don't see it as "Top" important from an encyclopedic standpoint. I doubt it is as important as say Ancient Rome or Peloponnesian War. --Bender235 21:32, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
"The erotic relation of men to youths was the necessary and sole preparation, to a degree unattainable to our comprehension, of all manly education." —Nietzsche
There are kmany others that attest to the critical importance of pederasty, but I do not think it necessary to trot them all out. Unless you can come up with countervailing sources suggesting a lesser importance I suggest we revert. Haiduc 02:41, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
Why we have importance ratings anyway? Different editors are going to have different ideas of what's important, and the ratings seem like creations of individual editors rather than some process of consensus. I'd rather not have them at all. --Akhilleus (talk) 04:47, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] O.J. Mayo

I reverted your above page move, but I wanted to give you the courtesy of explaining my action. As you can see here, the format that you proposed is generally correct. However, in the same section, the guideline reads "An abbreviation of a first or last name (or omitting punctuation marks and spaces as described above) is only possible if this can be considered as a well established and generally used subject's name or nick name."

In his hometown and in the local and national media, he is refered to as "O.J." After he goes on to the NBA, this may change and a move along the lines that you proposed may indeed be prudent. For the time being, however, the article should remain named "O.J. Mayo."

That being said, thanks for your interest in the article, and keep up your excellent work on Wikipedia. youngamerican (ahoy hoy) 01:01, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] South Gwinnett High School

A tag has been placed on South Gwinnett High School, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable, that is, why an article about that subject should be included in Wikipedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert notability may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is notable, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. FirefoxMan 22:20, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Speedy deletion of Jimmy Clausen

A tag has been placed on Jimmy Clausen, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

Article was recently deleted. There have been no significant changes since then. See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jimmy Clausen

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet very basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as an appropriate article, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is appropriate, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

He is a senior, but I have no idea if he's going into the draft. —Disavian (talk/contribs) 08:41, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] 2007 NBA Draft

Please stop adding the list of players. As I said in the discussion, there is no reference provided, nor is there any explanation to the rankings. If you even took a look at the mock drafts listed on the bottom, none of them even agree outside of the top two players. Lastly, no player has even declared for the draft yet. It would be ridiculous to put up a list of players if a player may not even declare for the draft. Do not add the list again unless you provide a reasonable explanation. 75.177.47.183 01:56, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

I have asked many times for you to comment, yet you insist on adding the player projections without doing so. Please comment. 75.177.47.183 23:24, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Longhorn player wikilinks

Hello Bender, I see you added some redlinks to Template:2005 Texas Longhorn roster. May I inquire how you selected the players to link? I had previously only linked players who already have articles. Do you think these players are likely to get articles soon? Johntex\talk 18:27, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

Yes, I do. And some of the players you've linked didn't have articles, btw, like Aaron Lewis and Aaron Harris. --Bender235 19:01, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
Actually, as of my last version of the template, all the linked players did have links.[5] You say you believe those articles will be created, but you don't say why you believe that. Could you please enlighten me? I don't have a strong objection excepet that it seems like we should have some criteria for why we are redlinking some names and not others. Johntex\talk 20:26, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
Check Aaron Lewis and Aaron Harris. These aren't football players.
I don't know if or when new articles will be created. I just linked a few players that I think a above-average in this team. --Bender235 20:54, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
Yes, I see that now. My point is that I wikilinked all the players who had articles (or that I thought had articles). I think that is a logical cut-off. If they don't have articles now, it seems better not to link them unless the articles or planned. Johntex\talk 00:44, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Notability of Albert Henrichs

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Albert Henrichs, by Brianga (talk · contribs), another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Albert Henrichs seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Albert Henrichs, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Please note, this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion, it did not nominate Albert Henrichs itself. [edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Ron_Artest_mugshot_2007.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Ron_Artest_mugshot_2007.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. ShakespeareFan00 11:52, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Aaron Mckie

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Aaron Mckie, by Downwards (talk · contribs), another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Aaron Mckie fits the criteria for speedy deletion for the following reason:

Wikipedia's search function automatically recognises lowercase letters, which obviates the need for a redirect page such as this one.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Aaron Mckie, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to leave a message on the bot operator's talk page if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. --Android Mouse Bot 2 04:24, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] AfD nomination of Arthur Brown (American football)

Arthur Brown (American football), an article you created, has been nominated for deletion. We appreciate your contributions. However, an editor does not feel that Arthur Brown (American football) satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in the nomination space (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and the Wikipedia deletion policy). Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Arthur Brown (American football) and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). [edit] Calvin Johnson (American football) Featured Article push

I'd like to nominate Calvin Johnson (American football) for Featured Article status, but I'd like the article expanded a little bit before I do. Since you're one of the primary editors of that article, I figured that you'd be a good one to ask. My primary concern is comprehensiveness; it needs more prose/information, especially in "Early years" and "College career". Also consult suggestions in the recent peer review, the ongoing WPBIO A-class review, and these examples of FA-Class athletes. Once the article gets a bit longer, I'll nominate it at FAC, and I hope you'll help address reviewers' suggestions. —Disavian (talk/contribs) 01:22, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Article on Phil Danaher

My good friend Coach Phil Danaher called me wondering how bio ended up on Wikipedia. I explained to him how the site works - but was wondering why you chose to write an article on him? I can send you more information or photos if you would like. user:Gandalf443 —Preceding signed but undated comment was added at 03:23, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

Well, I considered him a notable Texas high school football coach, since he is third on the all-time winning list. G.A. Moore and Gordon Wood already had their articles in the Wikipedia, so I added Coach Danaher as well.
You are welcomed to add more information or a photo to the article, of course. ––Bender235 09:48, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Mitch Mustain

Your entry for "Pro-style Quarterbacks 2006" from Rivals.com was removed for several reasons. This gets into the realm of speculation on an internet service that is not appropriate for an encyclopedia. All the listings before it for Mustain are in regards to overall position titles, not something specific and speculative like "Pro-style Quarterbacks." The one you listed is for "Pro-style Quarterbacks" and is pure speculation on the internet and has no place on an encyclopedia and is not consistent with the preceding listings. Caffehamp 16:41, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

So why is this article citing Scout.com, as Rivals.com is prohibited? ––Bender235 18:47, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
Because you are listing "Pro-style Quarterbacks 2006," which is a speculative listing not related to actual play at the high school and college levels. The other listings refer to Mustain in terms of best player overall, not something specific like "Pro-style Quarterbacks 2006." That belongs on an internet service, not an encyclopedia. Caffehamp 18:54, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
So if we use the overall ranking (where Mustain is 2nd quarterback behind Stafford), it's all fine?
BTW: That Scout.com ranking is based on potential, too. That best quarterback on actual play in 2006 was probably Greg McElroy of Southlake Carroll, since he had far better stats than Matt Stafford, but he won't be the best for NFL or even NCAA purposes. ––Bender235 19:06, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
Well, no, because until that point, all the listings were for all positions on the field and were not restricted to the position of quarterback. It suddenly switches from overall positions to quarterback ranking; hence why the start of the sentence with "However, he was..." becomes grammatically and factually inaccurate. In regards to awards, those are the most prestigious high school awards and are considered accomplishments, not based on what someone is projected to do in the future. Caffehamp 19:26, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Problem with red links

There is no way of knowing what the article of a high school or football coach will be called. For example, an article for Central High School in Chicago might be called Central High School (Chicago, IL), Central High School (Chicago), Central High School (IL), Chicago Central High School, Central High School, Chicago, IL, to name a few. An article for a football coach named Joe Smith might be called Joe Smith (American football coach), Joe Smith (football coach), Joe Smith (American football, or something else. Also, new articles for obscure football coaches (such as those who have only coached high school teams, of which many of these are) are rarely created. If you find that one has been added you are welcome to add a link. I kept the link to Raymond Burnett, as you specified that his article will be up soon. Iowa13 21:49, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

You are correct about the naming conventions, but often in this case they are not followed. And I just don't think the article looks clean with so many red links. Also, thanks for wikifying Burnett, his article is up now. Iowa13 03:45, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] René Moreau

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article René Moreau, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice explains why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you endorse deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add {{db-author}} to the top of the page. [edit] Calathes

Hi,

I reverted Nick Calathes. There are two problems with it: First, pronunciations in Wikipedia are assumed to be in English unless stated otherwise. True, people sometimes get sloppy, but this guy was born in the US, and his first name is English. Second, [kɑˈlɑʈɪs] is incorrect even as Greek. [kaˈlaθis] would be closer, and could appear after his Greek name, though there isn't much point since it's predictable from the spelling. Do you know how people say his name in English? kwami (talk) 18:07, 24 November 2007 (UTC)

In that YouTube clip they say his name multiple times (with "English pronunciation", if you want so). They pronounce his name with the "a" like in "apple" and the "th" like in "the", and that is wrong.
Despite he was born in the U.S. and his first name is English, his last name is still Greek. Like Jake Delhomme still having a French name - it's "Del-Hom", not "Del-Homey". Get the point? —Bender235 (talk) 10:34, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Superscripting the suffix in ordinal numbers

Hello Bender. I notice you superscript the suffix (th, nd, st, etc.) of ordinal numbers — per Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style#Exceptions, the suffix is not supposed to be superscripted. I too think they look better superscripted, but I think it's best if we follow Wikipedia's guidelines. Thanks! BlueAg09 (Talk) 01:11, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

Oh, okay. I did not know that. I won't superscript the suffix anymore. Thanks for that information. ––Bender235 01:15, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] The Legend: Tom Osborne

Speaking as a Nebraskan who knows the importance of tradition of in this program, I must ask that you stop removing Coach Osborne's place as interim head coach. The template isn't "Nebraska Head Coaches who Coached a Game" it's just coaches, and whether or not he coached a game is irrelevant. The man appointed himself interim head coach during a time of crisis, and for that he should keep his name on the template.

Go Huskers! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.93.213.33 (talk • contribs)

I hope you are aware that this means you have to add about a dozen other coaches to the Huskers Football Coach template, because every search for a coach takes some weeks, and there is always an interim coach in that time. But those coaches never appear in official records, except in that one case that they coached a game (mostly the bowl game, like Pelini did in 2003). This being said, I'll remove Osborne as interim coach. ––Bender235 09:27, 3 December 2007 (UTC)
Suck my Husker balls, dick. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.93.213.39 (talk) 16:26, 3 December 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, right… ––Bender235 16:33, 3 December 2007 (UTC)
It's not the place for some French guy to say what should be on a Nebraska template. Osborne appointing himself interim head coach was a big thing around here, and it should reflect that on here. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.93.213.39 (talk) 16:37, 3 December 2007 (UTC)
OK, as a Nebraska Fan, I support Bender235 in this matter. It is unrealistic to list every interim coach that has ever held the position for every program. It doesn't matter if it was a "big thing" in Nebraska, Wikipedia is not about Nebraskan Big Things. I love all Dr. Tom has done for the state too, but putting him up as interim coach for a four-day assignment with no practices supervised or games coached is not a notable event in the big picture that will stand the test of time. Heck, I am the guy that put him up on WP for the interim post initially, so I am as qualified as anyone to state my opinion after changing my mind about it. As for the vulgar comment from another Husker fan, I am appalled. Shame on you, representing Nebraska that way, I expect much better than that from all Nebraskans. My apologies, Bender235, for that childish wag. Also, thanks for obtaining a block on the user engaged in the edit war. Fjbfour (talk) 03:47, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Petrino

Bender, why in the world did you edit out that Bobby Petrino was a candidate for the Arkansas job and rule it as vandalism??? You have Petrino listed as a potential candidate for the LSU and Auburn jobs but their two coaches just signed new contracts! Those jobs are not open nor will they come open. So you can leave that and someone puts in that Petrino is rumored to be a candidate for the Arkansas job (rumor has been going around for a week) and you call it vandalism? Who are you anyway? You don't know what you are talking about. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Hackerhog99 (talkcontribs) 01:27, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

I understand you have a problem with another user's edits of the above article, but please try to keep cool while editing. You can not force other users to discuss their changes with you, and edit warring is not the solution. You have no more right than he has to edit the article, and could just as easily be blocked for your reverts as he could be for his. What he's doing may be misguided, but it's not vandalism. Also, comments such as this one are completely unacceptable, especially when dealing with new users. Remember: There are no emergencies on Wikipedia. Relax, don't yell at other users, and eventually things will work themselves out. Kafziel Talk 22:44, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] NCAA Division I football season or College football season

In answer to your question, the 1976 article is mainly about the progress of the 1976 season in Division I, though there's also a section about the results of the Division II and III playoffs and the NAIA playoffs, with room for anyone to add on. Thus, it really is about that particular year in college football. Starting with 1978, there are articles about Division I-A and Division I-AA seasons, and it's conceivable (but not likely) that someone will do a spinoff article about the Division II season of 31 years ago. Until then, "19__ college football season" is a good way to incorporate all the information. Mandsford (talk) 22:35, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Whitney Lewis

Another editor has added the "{{prod}}" template to the article Whitney Lewis, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the editor doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia or discuss the relevant issues at its talk page. If you remove the {{prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. [edit] An opinion please

Hi. I notice you are a vastly experienced editor here at Wikipedia, and I was wondering if you could take a quick look at User:Refsworldlee/Oliver Golding, and let me know whether it would pass being introduced into mainspace, on grounds of notability (the subject may have given up acting, at least for now, and does not yet play tennis to the very highest standard, being a minor) or any other criteria you think may fit. This would be appreciated. Thanks. Ref (chew)(do) 13:50, 28 January 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, I pretty sure this article is ready to being introduced into mainspace. ––Bender235 (talk) 19:49, 28 January 2008 (UTC)
Thanks very much for that. Ref (chew)(do) 21:33, 28 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Thank you

Hello Bender, I was thinking today about creating Darrell Scott but I see that you beat me to it. It is a very nice article. I appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, especially those that touch on UT football, of course! I want to thank you for your hard work by presenting you with this barnstar:

The College football Barnstar
Thank you, Bender 235, for your hard work on college-football related articles, such as Darrell Scott. Johntex\talk 04:38, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

Also, I noticed that you made a small improvement to 2005 Texas Longhorn football team recently. I thank you for that also. Even though it is one of our Featured Articles it is nice to see that some improvements are still being made. Since you have great language skills in German, I wonder if you would be interested in translating onto the German Wikipedia? I think it would be great to have an article there. Naturally, it would not necessarily need to be as detailed, but if we could get the article to be FA quality on two different Wikipedias that would be amazing. Johntex\talk 04:38, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, I thought about that, too, but besides it's a whole lot of work, it's also difficult to do. A couple of words and phrases can't be translated into German, such as "he rushed for 4,000 yards" because there is no word for "rush" in German. It's the same "he recovered a fumble" and a couple of others. I already tried to translate the Vince Young article into German, but I gave up. ––Bender235 (talk) 12:13, 1 February 2008 (UTC)
I just looked at the German Vince Young. I don't read any German but I think it is good to have even a basic article like that. Short articles are valuable too! Thanks again for your work. Johntex\talk 19:49, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Rugby edits

While your edits for UK based rugby players are obviously well-intentioned the weight should be in stones and pounds first rather than kilograms.Londo06 14:23, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

Why? The official websites of their clubs also have kilograms first, see [6] for example. ––Bender235 (talk) 14:31, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
The convention is that for the country the most commonly used term would be used. ie if a Queensland Reds player was detailed on their website in m, he would still be detailed in cm as that's what it would be on the Wallabies page. The same goes if a Scot moves to a French side, it would be the country that is key.Londo06 14:36, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
Okay. I didn't know that. I'll keep that in mind. --Bender235 (talk) 14:40, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Walkersville High School

I see that you rated Walkersville High School as low importance and categorized it as an article with no info box. Does the info box that it contains not qualify as an info box or were you mistaken? And out of curiosity, what makes a high school low importance according to some editors and medium to others? I used the same style and template with every high school page that I have created, yet they are never consistantly rated. Just curious. I would appreciate your feedback. Wallstreethotrod (talk) 20:53, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

I'm sorry. I was in kind of a hurry when I added the Template:WPSchools and thus forgot to add the infobox=no parameter. The infobox the article currently has is alright.
The importance rating is subjective. I don't really know where to separate between medium- and low-importance schools. In my mind the rating depends on how "well-known" a school is. Schools like Mater Dei (CA), Oak Hill (VA), Cardinal Mooney (OH), Highland Park (TX) are qualified for "mid" or even "high" importance because of their well-known athletic programs, for example. I wasn't really sure whether Walkersville has any well-known program, so I gave it a "low" importance rating. But you are free to change it. --Bender235 (talk) 23:44, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for uploading Image:Melaniebernier.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. [edit] Amobi Okoye

I noticed the recent edit you made to Amobi Okoye, but could not find anything in the NY Times article you referenced denying that he had been offered a Harvard scholarship. The original reference (9th paragraph) is at odds with your edit summary. Have I missed something? Please clarify when you get a chance. Thanks! —Travistalk 01:54, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

I actually doubt that Houston Chronicle article, because there is no other newspaper verifying Okoye's Harvard offer. Not a single one. At least I couldn't find one. I only found Okoye's statements that his father wanted him to go to Harvard and that he was admitted. But no one mentions an academic scholarship besides the Houston Chronicle. --Bender235 (talk) 02:26, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
Compromise, see the article. --Bender235 (talk) 10:15, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
If you really can’t find anything else to back up the Chronicle story, feel free to change the article back to your earlier wording. (It certainly wouldn’t be the first time the Chronicle got something wrong.) I also haven’t seen any other reference to a scholarship from Harvard. —Travistalk 13:57, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
And, of course, all of the Alabama newspapers want me to pay $2.95 per article :/ —Travistalk 14:11, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Huh?

Can I ask why you did this without an edit summary and reason? I'm a rather involved editor in this project, and I usually consider it rude for a real editor like yourself (as opposed to a troll) to not at least inform an experienced editor like myself why my edit was summarily reverted? Doesn't happen to me except usually by nutjobs, and you don't appear to be one!!!! Thanks. OrangeMarlin Talk• Contributions 03:26, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

I was involved in that article, too. I actually made that example list. If you look at that list, you might recognize that there are always links to the volcanoes despite there are specific articles on the eruptions. That's why I reverted it. --Bender235 (talk) 10:14, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Ellipsis

The rules at Wikipedia:Did you know#The hook specify: "* Entries should start with an ellipsis of three full stops (not the ellipsis character …), and end with a question mark." So if you want to replace the dot dot dot with an ellipsis character at the Template talk:Did you know#Suggestions instructions, then you should remove the rule to allow either form of an ellipsis. If not, we could agree to revert your edit.

As it is, I edit ellipsis characters in hooks to change them to dot dot dot, to conform to the rule. If the suggested example tells newbies to do it "wrong", that is, wrong from the rule's point of view, then that "error" may occur more often. I don't know of a good reason for the rule, as either form of the ellipsis looks the same to me, except on the edit page. But maybe it looks different on someone else's system, so I have been making them consistently dot dot dot, even before someone else added the dot dot dot rule.

I hope you didn't intend for everyone to have to use the ellipsis character for all hooks. Newbies can add three dots by imitating existing hooks, but an ellipsis character requires them to see &#x2026 in edit mode, and grasp what it means. One of us would have a full-time job changing dot dot dots to an ellipsis character. Art LaPella (talk) 21:41, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

Now I'm changing it back. Art LaPella (talk) 06:12, 14 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Geology of Mars

Hi, Bender. I saw your edits to Geology of Mars, but I was puzzled what they were intended to achieve. Collapsing templates like that just makes the source harder to maintain and it wastes your time. Please refrain from repeatedly undoing other people's edits, as you are doing in LeBron James. If you continue, you may be blocked from editing Wikipedia. The three-revert rule (3RR) prohibits making more than three reversions in a content dispute within a 24-hour period. Additionally, users who perform a large number of reversions in content disputes may be blocked for edit warring, even if they do not technically violate the three-revert rule. [edit] 3RR

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war. Note that the three-revert rule prohibits making more than three reversions on a single page within a 24 hour period. Additionally, users who perform a large number of reversions in content disputes may be blocked for edit warring, even if they do not technically violate the three-revert rule. If you continue, you may be blocked from editing. Please do not repeatedly revert edits, but use the talk page to work towards wording and content that gains a consensus among editors. If necessary, pursue dispute resolution. Tiptoety talk 17:42, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Well, I'm not the one who reverted three times. That was User:Zodiiak. --Bender235 (talk) 17:45, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
Please understand that the three revert rule clearly states that editors may make three reverts and can only be blocked on their fourth revert. I am simply leaving you a message to infrom you that edit warring can lead to a block of both parties involved. Cheers, Tiptoety talk 17:46, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
Actually, thats a mis-statement of the rules. You almost undoubtedly *will* be blocked for 4R in 24h. But there is no entitlement to 3R; you can be blocked for edit warring for less. Meantime, please also note the convention of marking your reverts with "rv" or somesuch; not doing so can look underhand William M. Connolley (talk) 22:13, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Unreferenced

It's not nonsense at all; it's our most fundamental policy, non-negotiable and not fulfilled by implication that the source is is the case itself. If you confirm that you used the case itself for the information, I'll do it for you, though you'll still need a reference for the statement that the case is a "landmark".--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 17:37, 14 June 2008 (UTC)

Have you actually read the Law journal article by Blakey? ––Bender235 (talk) 17:41, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
No and reading it is irrelevant. If it says the case is a landmark case then cite it as a source. A further reading section serves to point people to...further reading. It does not act as a reference for the material because you are not citing it as a reference. If you tell me that it says it is a landmark case (not necessarily in those words), I'll reference that for you as well. Let me make this explicit. Tell me what information in this article comes from what sources, and I'll do the heavy lifting.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 17:47, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
