[edit] Pipe sorting

Noticed your edit of Glenn Davis; absolutely no complaint about it, nor any harm done, but to save you needless editing time in the future, the pipe sort is unaffected, alas, by anything after the first word of it. The purpose of the pipe sort is merely to alphabetize him correctly, after which it doesn't care. Thus, thru the marvels of computer stuff, "|Davis" is sufficient to get him listed as "Davis, /remainder of article name/". Notice for example that he still is not listed as Davis, Glenn Woodward in the category lists, for example Category:West Point graduates; it would indeed be nice, rather than the awkward listing as it stands, but I, at least, know of no way of doing that. [edit] Italian-Americans

Can you please help me in understanding how one qualifies as Italian-American? Does that imply that they have citizenship in both Italy and the U.S/Canada? Would it mean that both parents are of Italian ancestry, but a citizen of the U.S. (or vice-versa)? One parent? Or possibly just having a last last name that sounds Italian (or Italian with an American sounding name)? How many generations, or at what percentage of blood relation does it take to still be Italian-American? I am asking because there are no German-American, or Russian-American, or Brazilian-American categories, yet the Italian-American category is quite extensive. Cacophony 04:14, Mar 24, 2005 (UTC)

"Lead," the element, rhymes with "led," the past tense and participle of "lead," the verb (which rhymes with "read" and "reed," but not "read" or "red," just to illustrate the perversity of English pronunciation and spelling), but should not be confused with it. So when you are referring to the Rick Barry-led Oaks, please use the correct form. Wikipedia Search. I was looking for "FGrHist" etc. That's it. And since I am German, it was easy to see that "... der griechischer Historiker" was wrong. ;-) --Bender235 15:18, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

I think this is an example of a very interesting "invisible hand" process that improves Wikipedia. If you don't mind I have a couple more questions for you as an agent of the "invisible hand." The Golden Fleece article does not actually contain the text "FGrHist," so did you go to the trouble of trying several searches using different key words to locate all references? Or did you just happen upon it while reading the Golden Fleece article? What motivated you to make this link? Did you create the entry for FGrHist?

So right now I'm the object of some sort of scientific study, or what? ;-) I wasn't only looking for "FGrHist", that's why I wrote "etc." behind it. I took "FGrHist", "Jacoby", "Fragmente der griechischen Historiker", and so on, in order to create links on that articles to Die Fragmente der griechischen Historiker. I did create that one. But actually there was already an article on this book, named Fragmente der griechischen Historiker, so some admin merged both articles a few minutes after I created the first one. For example, Randy Ayers has been coaching the Buckeyes from the 89/90 to the 96/97 season, and O'Brien from 97/98 to 03/04: should we write "Ayers 89-97, O'Brien 97-04" or "Ayers 90-97, O'Brien 98-04"? --Bender235 22:18, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

Hi there. I just wanted to encourage you while you're making categories for college basketball, to please do two things: (1) follow the naming conventions in Category:College football teams, where we try awfully hard not to use shorthand like "SFC" and "NAU" when the school's abbreviation is not well known (unlike, say, LSU or USC); and (2) link the category to a basketball category, which links to the school category. Check out any of the other categories to see how that's done. As a general rule, we don't create categories unless we have three or four players, but that's been disregarded lots of times. Hello, Though it is hard to quantify this kind of thing, and it is to some extent a subjective judgement, I would suggest that a practice which was adopted throughtout ancient Greece, and which informed art, politics, philosophy, sports, and the military, and which is thought by a number of modern scholars to have been at the root of the "Greek miracle" deserves to be considered as having "top" importance. I am talking about Greek pederasty, of course. Is there some specific reason why you removed that label from the article? Haiduc 20:53, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

I don't see it as "Top" important from an encyclopedic standpoint. I doubt it is as important as say Ancient Rome or Peloponnesian War. --Bender235 21:32, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

I reverted your above page move, but I wanted to give you the courtesy of explaining my action. As you can see here, the format that you proposed is generally correct. However, in the same section, the guideline reads "An abbreviation of a first or last name (or omitting punctuation marks and spaces as described above) is only possible if this can be considered as a well established and generally used subject's name or nick name."

In his hometown and in the local and national media, he is refered to as "O.J." After he goes on to the NBA, this may change and a move along the lines that you proposed may indeed be prudent. For the time being, however, the article should remain named "O.J. Mayo."

Please stop adding the list of players. As I said in the discussion, there is no reference provided, nor is there any explanation to the rankings. If you even took a look at the mock drafts listed on the bottom, none of them even agree outside of the top two players. Lastly, no player has even declared for the draft yet. It would be ridiculous to put up a list of players if a player may not even declare for the draft. Actually, as of my last version of the template, all the linked players did have links.[5] You say you believe those articles will be created, but you don't say why you believe that. Could you please enlighten me? I don't have a strong objection excepet that it seems like we should have some criteria for why we are redlinking some names and not others. Well, no, because until that point, all the listings were for all positions on the field and were not restricted to the position of quarterback. It suddenly switches from overall positions to quarterback ranking; hence why the start of the sentence with "However, he was..." becomes grammatically and factually inaccurate. In regards to awards, those are the most prestigious high school awards and are considered accomplishments, not based on what someone is projected to do in the future. There is no way of knowing what the article of a high school or football coach will be called. For example, an article for Central High School in Chicago might be called Central High School (Chicago, IL), Central High School (Chicago), Central High School (IL), Chicago Central High School, Central High School, Chicago, IL, to name a few. An article for a football coach named Joe Smith might be called Joe Smith (American football coach), Joe Smith (football coach), Joe Smith (American football, or something else. Also, new articles for obscure football coaches (such as those who have only coached high school teams, of which many of these are) are rarely created. I reverted Nick Calathes. There are two problems with it: First, pronunciations in Wikipedia are assumed to be in English unless stated otherwise. True, people sometimes get sloppy, but this guy was born in the US, and his first name is English. Second, [kɑˈlɑʈɪs] is incorrect even as Greek. [kaˈlaθis] would be closer, and could appear after his Greek name, though there isn't much point since it's predictable from the spelling. In that YouTube clip they say his name multiple times (with "English pronunciation", if you want so). They pronounce his name with the "a" like in "apple" and the "th" like in "the", and that is wrong.

Speaking as a Nebraskan who knows the importance of tradition of in this program, I must ask that you stop removing Coach Osborne's place as interim head coach. The template isn't "Nebraska Head Coaches who Coached a Game" it's just coaches, and whether or not he coached a game is irrelevant. The man appointed himself interim head coach during a time of crisis, and for that he should keep his name on the template.

I hope you are aware that this means you have to add about a dozen other coaches to the Huskers Football Coach template, because every search for a coach takes some weeks, and there is always an interim coach in that time. But those coaches never appear in official records, except in that one case that they coached a game (mostly the bowl game, like Pelini did in 2003). OK, as a Nebraska Fan, I support Bender235 in this matter. It is unrealistic to list every interim coach that has ever held the position for every program. It doesn't matter if it was a "big thing" in Nebraska, Wikipedia is not about Nebraskan Big Things. I love all Dr. Tom has done for the state too, but putting him up as interim coach for a four-day assignment with no practices supervised or games coached is not a notable event in the big picture that will stand the test of time. Heck, I am the guy that put him up on WP for the interim post initially, so I am as qualified as anyone to state my opinion after changing my mind about it. As for the vulgar comment from another Husker fan, I am appalled. Shame on you, representing Nebraska that way, I expect much better than that from all Nebraskans. You can not force other users to discuss their changes with you, and edit warring is not the solution. In answer to your question, the 1976 article is mainly about the progress of the 1976 season in Division I, though there's also a section about the results of the Division II and III playoffs and the NAIA playoffs, with room for anyone to add on. Thus, it really is about that particular year in college football. Starting with 1978, there are articles about Division I-A and Division I-AA seasons, and it's conceivable (but not likely) that someone will do a spinoff article about the Division II season of 31 years ago. Yeah, I thought about that, too, but besides it's a whole lot of work, it's also difficult to do. A couple of words and phrases can't be translated into German, such as "he rushed for 4,000 yards" because there is no word for "rush" in German. I'm sorry. I was in kind of a hurry when I added the Template:WPSchools and thus forgot to add the infobox=no parameter. The infobox the article currently has is alright.

The importance rating is subjective. I don't really know where to separate between medium- and low-importance schools. In my mind the rating depends on how "well-known" a school is. Schools like Mater Dei (CA), Oak Hill (VA), Cardinal Mooney (OH), Highland Park (TX) are qualified for "mid" or even "high" importance because of their well-known athletic programs, for example. I wasn't really sure whether Walkersville has any well-known program, so I gave it a "low" importance rating. But you are free to change it. --Bender235 (talk) 23:44, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

I actually doubt that Houston Chronicle article, because there is no other newspaper verifying Okoye's Harvard offer. Not a single one. At least I couldn't find one. The rules at Wikipedia:Did you know#The hook specify: "* Entries should start with an ellipsis of three full stops (not the ellipsis character …), and end with a question mark." So if you want to replace the dot dot dot with an ellipsis character at the Template talk:Did you know#Suggestions instructions, then you should remove the rule to allow either form of an ellipsis. If not, we could agree to revert your edit.

As it is, I edit ellipsis characters in hooks to change them to dot dot dot, to conform to the rule. If the suggested example tells newbies to do it "wrong", that is, wrong from the rule's point of view, then that "error" may occur more often. I don't know of a good reason for the rule, as either form of the ellipsis looks the same to me, except on the edit page. But maybe it looks different on someone else's system, so I have been making them consistently dot dot dot, even before someone else added the dot dot dot rule.

I hope you didn't intend for everyone to have to use the ellipsis character for all hooks. Newbies can add three dots by imitating existing hooks, but an ellipsis character requires them to see &#x2026 in edit mode, and grasp what it means. Please understand that the three revert rule clearly states that editors may make three reverts and can only be blocked on their fourth revert. Actually, thats a mis-statement of the rules. You almost undoubtedly *will* be blocked for 4R in 24h. But there is no entitlement to 3R; you can be blocked for edit warring for less. Try actually reading the edit before undo-ing it. This list is supposed to be someone alphabetical. (That means its in the order of the alphabet) Josh Shipp does not come after Russell Westbrook. Please do not delete URLs when you add DOIs. The redundancy is useful in this case. You will note that both fields exist in the template. One does not make the other pointless. No and reading it is irrelevant. If it says the case is a landmark case then cite it as a source. A further reading section serves to point people to...further reading. It does not act as a reference for the material because you are not citing it as a reference. If you tell me that it says it is a landmark case (not necessarily in those words), I'll reference that for you as well. Let me make this explicit.
