Basketball at the Summer Olympics
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Basketball has been played consistently at the Summer Olympic Games since 1936, with demonstration events in 1904 and 1924. The United States have won all the gold medals in the men's competition from 1936-2004, with the exception of 1972, 1988 (Soviet Union), 1980 (Yugoslavia; did not participate because of the boycott of the Olympic Games), and in 2004 when Argentina won the gold medal. Argentina is the only country to have broken American hegemony since the United States have been sending professional teams to the Olympics in 1992.
Winning the Olympics is considered to be the highest honor in international basketball, followed by the FIBA World Championship and the respective intercontinental championships; this is due to FIBA's rule of allowing senior national teams to participate in the tournament, as opposed to FIFA's under-23 rule in Olympic men's football (note, however, that women's Olympic football features full senior sides).
