The 1993 Embassy World Snooker Championship took place at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield, between the 16 April and 3 May 1993. The final stands out for the fact that Stephen Hendry, in what was his greatest performance at the Crucible, soundly defeated Jimmy White in the final, 18–5.
[edit] Notable moments
- Hendry beating White 18-5 was only the third time since the Championship moved to the Crucible, and so far the last, that the title was settled in the afternoon with a session to spare.
- Hendry and Alan McManus in their semi-final match was the first time two Scots had competed against each other in a World Championship semi-final. A bagpiper played "Scotland the Brave" to mark the ocassasion, when he came down to the arena along with the two players.
- In the other semi-final, James Wattana of Thailand became the first player from the Far East to make it to that stage and the only fourth from overseas; until that point, the only non-British and non-Irish players that had made it to the last-four stage were from Canada and South Africa.
- Ronnie O'Sullivan made his World Championship debut at the age of 17 years and 5 months, making him the second-youngest Championship player since Stephen Hendry in the 1986 event. O'Sullivan lost to McManus 7–10 in the first round.
- There were 35 century breaks in the 1993 Championship, a new record beating 31 centuries in the 1991 event.
- Only one seeded player lost in the first round, equalling the championship's record low. This was in stark contrast to the previous year, in which a record-equalling eight seeds were defeated [1]
