[edit] History
WONU first broadcast on the 89.7 frequency in January 1967. Before that time the station was on a closed loop and available only on campus.[1] In 1988, the radio station saw an upgrade with the construction of the existing 421' tower structure on campus, and new transmitter with an upgrade to 35,000 watts (35kw). This expanded the signal into south Chicago and northwest Indiana. We are located in the old Hardy's burger joint.

A program of growing excitement is the station's afternoon show, known as the "Tower Luv Hour" with host "tower". Former co-host Mallory DeWees recently left WONU to accept a job with a record company. The show airs weekdays from 2-to-6 p.m.
Other weekday programming includes mid-day with Carl Fletcher from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Total Axxess with Wally from 6 to 9 p.m., the All Request Hour with Jordan from 9 to 10 a.m., and Focus on the Family from 5:30 to 6 a.m.
[edit] Weekend programming
On Saturday and Sunday WONU broadcasts the Weekend 22 Countdown from 7-to-9 a.m. and 7-to-9 p.m. on Saturday and 7-to-9 p.m. on Sunday. The Sunday morning Worship Now program is hosted by Jordan from the Church of the Week, followed by a broadcast of the College Church of the Nazarene worship service in Bourbonnais, Illinois. The afternoon show is hosted by Shane on Shine which show ranks in the top 100 in the Chicago market for its timeslot!
[edit] Concerts
WONU promotes and hosts Contemporary Christian concerts in the Kankakee area and on the Olivet Nazarene University campus. Performances have included bands like Switchfoot, Toby Mac and David Crowder Band. WONU also hosts other types of performances such as Christian comedian Mark Lowry.
[edit] Shinefest
WONU hosts Shinefest most summers. In 2006, bands included Toby Mac, Family Force 5, and Hawk Nelson. In 2007 WONU was unable to find an available headliner in the Contemporary Christian genre.
[edit] Community involvement
WONU is very active in the community in the Chicago and Northwest Indiana area.
[edit] Remote Broadcasts
WONU personalities often broadcast from local businesses, churches, concerts, and events. These broadcasts spread awareness of attractions and events in the community.
[edit] Church of the Week
Every Sunday, WONU broadcasts live from a church in its broadcast range. Jordan hosts the Worship Now program from the church's lobby area and the church is featured on the station throughout the following week.
[edit] Teaching
Because WONU is owned by Olivet Nazarene University, it is used as a teaching station. The Bourbonnais studio contains a radio classroom with 20 computer stations configured specifically to teach radio. Olivet's communication department employs a full-time radio professor to teach the classes. WONU also offers radio and broadcasting clinics for younger students. If your lucky, you might be able to run to Dairy Queen before class, which is right down the street!
[edit] Chicago Bears
WONU is the official radio station of the Chicago Bears Training Camp, which has been held on the campus of Olivet Nazarene University since 2003.[2]
[edit] Future
During Fall pledge drive 2008, WONU announced that it will expand to HD Radio in 2008/09. According to on-air announcements, this will allow two additional digital signals on the 89.7MHz frequency. WONU would use these signals to broadcast in two new formats. The most popular requests from donors were for a Christian rock format and a 24/7 Praise and Worship format.
[edit] ShineRock
WONU streams ShineRock from | ShineRock.fm and broadcasts on a closed-circuit basis to the Olivet Nazarene University campus. Primarily a student-run station, ShineRock is broadcast from a studio in WONU's Bourbonnais facility. ShineRock is a harder, Christian Rock version of WONU. Programming features bands such as Pillar, Anberlin, Family Force 5, Skillet and Demon Hunter.
