User talk here is not archived. Old talk is deleted. Users are allowed to remove anything from their talk pages. See WP:TALK and other wikipedia guidelines/policies. Like Wikipedia articles over time, people change, and there is little point in referring to past stale arguments and discussions.

To keep the discussion in one thread some comments added here are moved to the user talk page of the author. I reply there. I also watchlist that talk page for awhile in order to note when the user there replies. Harassing comments are also sometimes moved off this talk page. As are inappropriately-applied warning templates, etc.. Sometimes the original author is offended by their own harassing comments, and my reply, on their user talk page. They then remove both from their talk page. I guess the light from their own verbal reflection offends them. One can find removed comments by using the history link on a talk page.

[edit] dictators category may end up POV

How are we supposed to decide who is a dictator and who isn't? In some cases it's clear, but in others it's disputed, making the category POV. Maybe it would be best to just include people who used the term "Dictator" or a variant in their official title? - TheMightyQuill (talk) 14:24, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Paying for highly-rated illustrations

This is an interesting model for funding the creation of illustrations:

[edit] Categories in World War II

I am currently reviewing and upgrading Second World War categories. The two you selected, casualties and crimes, are currently ambiguous and do not satisfy all the articles. For example there were military and civilian casualties, and there were crimes against civilians, economic and political criminals and crimes against military forces by their opponents (treatment of POWs). I will be creating appropriate sub-categories in due course, so please be patient and allow me work this out, which may take more then a few days. I will try not to rename too many categories in the process so people will still be able to use the categories they are familiar with, and any renaming will be announced in the project talk. [edit] RE:the Bulge

My reasoning behind it was, that anyone trying to look up similar articles will have been looking for these categories at the bottom of this page, not in the Battle of the Bulge category. Personally, I believe that the categories should remain at the bottom of the Battle of the Bulge article. Woody (talk) 14:45, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Upload pages

At WP:AN, you wrote:

Thanks Transhumanist for your efforts. I have seen a need for a long time for many improvements to the many upload pages on Wikipedia and the Commons. Getting changes made via the talk pages is like pulling teeth sometimes. Many people just give up. If nothing else your discussion here may have gotten a few more admins to pay attention to the talk page requests for changes. I hope more admins watchlist the many talk pages listed in the tables at the top of these pages:
Wikipedia talk:Upload
commons:Commons talk:Upload
I created those tables as a result of similar frustrations I had.
I also created Wikipedia talk:Upload/Sandbox - This sandbox idea may be better than other sandboxes since it is directly connected to the main talk page.
I don't see any problem though with also opening up the Wikipedia upload pages themselves to semi-protection now and then at the request of experienced editors.
commons:Commons:Upload has been at semi-protection without problems for a long time. --Timeshifter (talk) 18:58, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

You're welcome. If there's ever anything else you need help with, let me know, and I'll see if I can make time to assist.

Wikipedia:Upload is currently semi-protected. I've contacted others who posted concerns on the talk page, to let them know the page is live.

Concerning your table at the top of Wikipedia talk:Upload, you should take another look at it. ;) It's been transformed.

User:Remember the dot has opened up the upload forms to editing, by moving them to the Wikipedia namespace, and then User:Ilmari Karonen followed-up and made the moved pages operational by transcluding them back onto the original Mediawiki pages.

That's a step in the right direction.

But we should definitely keep a closer watch on the upload forms now.

I don't have time to work on them much now, but I'll get on there to proofread/copy-edit them as I find the time, with the same carefulness I've applied on Wikipedia:Upload.

Cheers.

[edit] Speedy deletion of Image:My Lai massacre.jpg

A tag has been placed on Image:My Lai massacre.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I8 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is available as a bit-for-bit identical copy on the Wikimedia Commons under the same name, or all references to the image on Wikipedia have been updated to point to the title used at Commons.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. sanawon 01:07, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
