Shayne Neumann
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shayne Kenneth Neumann is an Australian politician. He is an Australian Labor Party member of the Australian House of Representatives since 2007, representing the Division of Blair.
Neumann won the Queensland based seat of Blair for the Labor Party from the Liberal Party at the 2007 federal election. It was one of a number of Labor gains at that election which propelled the party from opposition to government.
Neumann was also the Labor candidate for Blair at the 2004 federal election, and proved unsuccessful in his attempt to defeat sitting Liberal member Cameron Thompson. This was unsurprising, since Blair was considered a safe Liberal seat at the time.[1]
Neumann defeated Thompson at his second attempt in 2007. He was aided by two factors. Firstly, a redistribution of the electoral boundaries, finalised in 2006, roughly halved the size of the Liberal margin in Blair.[2] Secondly, there was a big Labor resurgence across the country at the 2007 federal election under the leadership of Kevin Rudd. This resurgence was at its greatest in Queensland; Rudd's home state.[3]
