[edit] Politics

Before gaining elected office, Rea worked for a Queensland State Minister.

She was then elected as a Brisbane City councillor, representing the ward of Ekibin from 1991 to 1994 and the ward of Holland Park from 1997 to 2007.

Rea won the seat of Bonner for the Labor Party from the Liberal Party at the 2007 federal election.[1] It was one of a number of Labor gains at that election which propelled the party from opposition to government.

[edit] Controversy

In December 2006, Ian Lang, the president of the Mt Gravatt Labor Party branch and a senior policy adviser to Queensland Police Minister Judy Spence, wrote a stinging letter to Rea attacking her decision to remain in her A$117,000/year position as a Councillor "while undertaking considerable campaigning activities" to be elected in Bonner,[2] saying this could be seen as "not concentrating on the ward despite being paid to undertake this role". Bonner overlaps Rea's ward by about 90%. Rea resigned from Council on 7 October 2007[3], in order to campaign full-time.

During the 2007 election campaign, on 22 September 2007 ALP leader Kevin Rudd mis-pronounced Kerry Rea's name as "Carrie", and forgot where they were, among several other slips that week.[4]

[edit] Education

Rea graduated from school in Wynnum, and later studied at the University of Queensland for a Bachelor of Arts majoring in English, History and Philosophy.

[edit] Personal life

Rea is married to Ian and they have three children.
