Ian Elgin Macfarlane (born 5 April 1955), Australian politician, has been a Liberal Party of Australia member of the Australian House of Representatives since October 1998, representing the Division of Groom, Queensland. He was born in Kingaroy, Queensland, and was a farmer and president of the Queensland Graingrowers Association before entering politics. He has acquired the nickname "Chainsaw" due to his raspy voice and according to him, his ability to "cut through red tape".[1]
Macfarlane was Minister for Small Business from January 2001 to November 2001 and has been Minister for Industry, Tourism and Resources from November 2001 to December 2007.[2]
In a speech given in Adelaide on 20 February 2006, Clive Hamilton (director of The Australia Institute) identified Macfarlane as one of Australia's climate change "dirty dozen" (or Greenhouse Mafia), a group of climate change skeptics with considerable influence over Australian Government policy.[3]
