[edit] History

The first bishop of Manchester, Bishop Denis M. Bradley, invited the Benedictine monks of St. Mary's Abbey in Newark, New Jersey to form a school in his diocese. The monks accepted, and a six-year curriculum in philosophy and theology was developed. In 1895, the General Court of New Hampshire granted Saint Anselm College the right to bestow standard academic degrees upon its graduates.

In June 2007, the college hosted City Year's Cyzygy conference. The college also hosted back-to-back debates for both the Democratic and Republican parties in New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation presidential primary. Recently Dr.'s David George, Matthew Gonzales, and Linda Rulman of the Classics Department contributed to the History Channel's look at the movie 300.

[edit] Organization

Saint Anselm College offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing, as well as Bachelor of Arts degrees in thirty-one majors.

[edit] Special Programs

Pre-Medical or Pre-Dental: The health professions adviser and chairperson of the Pre-Professional Committee oversees the student's preparation if he or she intends to apply to a school of medicine (both MD and DO), dentistry, optometry, podiatry, or veterinary medicine, or to a graduate program in the allied health care professions.

Pre-Law: No specific program of study is required to gain admittance to law school. If the student is interested in law school, he or she will meet with the director of academic advisement for individual academic planning. A specific program of study based on educational interests and career goals can be shaped for the student.

Pre-Theological: The Pre-Theological Program involves concentration in philosophy and courses in the classical languages.

Cooperative Engineering: Saint Anselm offers a five-year cooperative liberal arts and engineering program in affiliation with the University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Indiana; the University of Massachusetts Lowell; The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.; and Manhattan College, Riverdale, New York. The student spends three years at Saint Anselm College, fulfilling the liberal arts and science prerequisites for engineering. In an additional two years, at one of the above universities selected by the student, the remaining engineering requirements are fulfilled. Under this arrangement, the student receives the Bachelor of Arts degree from Saint Anselm College, subsequent to the fulfillment of graduation requirements, and, upon the successful completion of the fifth year, an engineering degree from the cooperative institution’s School of Engineering.

[edit] New Hampshire Institute of Politics

The college is home to the New Hampshire Institute of Politics (NHIOP). It was founded on the basis that "educated and engaged citizens are vital for a healthy democracy." The NHIOP houses the Politics department, as well as provides classroom space for use by all departments.

The Institute is credited with raising the national profile of the college by incorporating the college in the New Hampshire Primary, an important early event in the United States Presidential Elections.

In 2003, Saint Anselm hosted a debate between the candidates for the Democratic Party nomination in the 2004 presidential election, and served as the Primary headquarters for the Fox News Network. Similarly, in June 2007 the NHIOP hosted debates sponsored by CNN for the candidates for the Republican and Democratic Party nominations. Most recently, Saint Anselm played host to the back-to-back ABC/Facebook/WMUR debates on January 5, 2008. For the second primary in a row (2004 and again in 2008), Fox News Channel has used the campus as their New Hampshire headquarters, broadcasting hours of live programming each day from the Cushing Center and the Quad.

The iIstitute has also attracted many notable speakers, including Howard Dean, Karl Rove, Steve Forbes, Senator Sam Brownback, William Kristol, Governor Bill Richardson, and Senator Mike Gravel. It is also a frequent stop for candidates making policy announcements and speeches, such as Ralph Nader and Howard Dean in 2004 and Hillary Clinton, John Edwards and Mitt Romney in 2007. EJ Dionne of the Washington Post is serving as a Senior Research Fellow to the NHIOP throughout the 2007 Primary season.

A majority of buildings on campus are devoted to student housing, with approximately 88% of the student body living on campus. The majority of freshman males live in Dominic Hall, while most Freshman females reside in either Joan of Arc Hall (usually referred to as JOA) or Baroody Hall. However, some freshmen may be placed in any dorm on campus. After freshman year, students choose their own housing which includes on campus apartments and townhouses through a lottery system. Brady and Hilary Halls are made up primarily of sophomores and juniors. Traditionally, dorms have been single sex, though in recent years this has begun to change. Building M, which has "pods" instead of traditional dormitory hallways, has been co-ed by pod since the 2002-2003 school year, and as of the 2007-2008 school year Brady Hall has female residents on its third floor while the bottom two floors are male.

[edit] Sports

Saint Anselm plays National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II men's and women's sports. These sports include soccer, cross-country running, football, baseball, basketball, skiing, lacrosse, ice hockey, and field hockey.

Football returned to the Hilltop in 1999 after a 58 year hiatus brought about by the onset of World War II. In the 1st game back, the Hawks topped UMass-Lowell 46-18 and went 4-5 overall in 1999. Their most noted football player is college and NFL player Ray "Scooter" McLean. Played 8 years for the Chicago Bears (1940-1948) as well as being an assistant coach to Vince Lombardi in Green Bay. Their most recent standouts was Michael Geary a 2003 2nd Team All Ne-10 offensive Lineman.[3] Michael Geary is now the offensive co-coordinator for the prestigious Lynnfield Pioneers of the Cape Ann League.
