Russell James Maryland (born March 22, 1969 in Chicago, Illinois) is a former American football player in the NFL. In a career lasting ten years, he played defensive tackle and nose tackle for the Oakland Raiders, Dallas Cowboys, and the Green Bay Packers.
[edit] 1991 first overall NFL pick
Maryland was the first overall pick in the 1991 NFL Draft, by the Dallas Cowboys. Even though the Cowboys did not have the worst record in the league that year, they used a draft choice acquired in a trade with the New England Patriots to make Maryland the number one overall choice.
Prior to joining the NFL, Maryland played college football at the University of Miami and high school football at Whitney Young High School, a Chicago public school.
