[edit] Response to message about Osterling

From Canadian2006 (talk) 23:14, 27 January 2008 (UTC) Hi! Thanks for the note. I hope you don't mind me messing with the article. Although I live in Saskatchewan, Canada, I'm originally from the Pittsburgh area (born in Homestead, high school in Latrobe). I have an obsession with architectural history -- especially the pre-WWII high-rises - and I'm interested in railroad history, too. I have several books on Pittsburgh architecture. When I saw the list of Osterling's buildings, I couldn't resist messing around with it.

However, I notice the Wiki articles on other major Pittsburgh architects (such as Hornbostel and Scheibler) don't list all of their works, just a few representative items. It may be a fruitless task-without-end to try to list every building an architect ever desgined, but in the case of Osterling, I couldn't resist.

Incidentally, the full text of an excellent book is available on-line. The pics are missing, however. http://www.pitt.edu/~tokerism/1010/PGH1986.htm

[edit] Wikimeet?

Since you indicated that you live in Pittsburgh, you may be interested in a Wikimeet I'm trying to set up in Pittsburgh. You may join the discussion at Wikipedia talk:Meetup/Pittsburgh. We currently have a total of 4 interested people, and we're trying to bring that up to 5 or more people. Once we get at least 5 interested people, we can then discuss the venue and location of the meetup. (Note: If for any reason you do not wish to participate, simply ignore this message.) Scobell302 19:04, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

You may read reports of meetups by clicking on different links from Wikipedia:Meetup. The Pittsburgh meetup is still in its planning stages, but when the planning is done, I'd expect us to do things similar to what is done during a typical meetup. Scobell302 00:29, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

I Thought that I split the Information up enough by putting it in different sections rather than 1 long paragraph. I guess sometimes I Just have problems getting started on an article.

Thanks for the getting the citation for Caliguiri. I actually looked at that article, but somehow I missed the part that actually compared how the two mayors were from the same place. --Chris Griswold () 21:18, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] History of Pittsburgh - request for collaboration

I've put a lot of additional work into this article, based on feedback from when it was a Featured Article Candidate. Also updated the maps to give them a more standard appearance. I'm going to submit the article for peer review and then FAC again. Before I do, though, I need some help from the WikiProject Pittsburgh. Please take some time and help with these tasks:

  1. improve the article with changes, additions and deletions
  2. some stern proof-reading, please
  3. give it a quality/importance rating at Talk:History of Pittsburgh
  4. leave feedback at Talk:History of Pittsburgh

Thanks. I'll be leaving this note at the talk pages of the project members who have been most active in Pittsburgh-related articles. Tomcool 14:44, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Irish art

Thanks for your message; I was quite active with Irish art about 18 months ago and then sort of got out of the habit of editting for a while. I am starting again now so a wiki-project would be cool. The main thing would be to get all the red links of the irish artists list, improve some of the weak ones and actually get the irish art article properly written. Notjim 10:25, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Pittsburgh

Hallo from Ireland. Relation to Pittsburgh? good question. My grand mothers aunt Rose Kearney left our village in co. Down to go to Pittsburgh in 1886. She married a German. We had no contact from the 1950's so when I got the internet in 1999 I searched. Both sides were looking on Genforum and we got in contact in 2000. So my grand mother met her 2nd cousin 'Al' in 2005 and I 4th & 5th cousins, with more in 2006. He is a big Pirates fan and sends me both Pirates and Steelers items. So they are my two teams in USA football & baseball. Culnacréann 21:26, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

Do you know what county or counties in Ireland your Irish ancestors came from? Your doing a good job keep it going, Sláinte! Culnacréann 21:33, 24 February 2007 (UTC)
Hi, 26 county Ireland is doing very well economically and the 6 counties not too bad. Bank of Ireland report Jun 06 - Ireland (26) is the second wealthiest country after Japan with every person, man, womand and child worth €150,000 (US $197,000) and 100,000 millionaries out of a population of 4 million, and incidentally growing rapidly. In Dublin you're more likely to find a Polish, Latvian, French or English accent than an Irish one! (they said). Cheapest house in the north £150,000 (US $294,000) but interest rates are going up all the time to keep a lid on things. Peace process would be going well if the dup would share power with Nationalists, theres no excuses for them now. Culnacréann 20:53, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

Dear RiverHockey! You are receiving this newsletter because you have signed up as a member of WikiProject Ice Hockey. The purpose of this newsletter is to update on the goings on of the project, as there have been major changes, and a lot of new recognized content in the past few weeks. If you are an inactive user, you probably won't recognize the new and improved state of the WikiProject!

From the project, Maxim.

Notes
  1. ^ All articles are in order of promotion, as written on the main WikiProject page; FA's have official dates of promotions.
  2. ^ A star represents a featured article or list

Article Improvement

By Maxim

Upon some discussion on the WikiProject talk page, the Article Improvement Drive page was revamped by Krm500 and Maxim. It was renamed Wikipedia:WikiProject Ice Hockey/Article Improvement, and it includes two section. The first section is called articles in dire need of improvement. It list articles, usually important, that are in very poor shape. The second section is called requested help. Users list an article they request help improving a certain article, which will facilitate collaboration, which is the aim of any WikiProject. There is one article currently listed there, Henrik Lundqvist, here. The goal is to at least get it to Good article status.

Diacritics

By Maxim

In the past few weeks, there has been quite heated discussion about the use of diacritics in article name. The current guideline is using diacritics in the pages of articles of all player names which require them, but redirects are exempt.

Task forces

By Maxim
There have been two new task forces started within the WikiProject to coordinate major topics.

Sweden Ice Hockey task force

This task force was initiated by Krm500. Its current goal is to improve Henrik Lundqvist to Good or Featured article status. It covers all Swedish clubs, leagues and competitions and associated articles, players and coaches that are Swedish, or have played/coached for a Swedish club, and arenas in Sweden. They plan to eventually operate as a sort of a sub-project, which will have its own articles for creation, ranking importance and quality of articles, and co-ordinate article improvement. Its current members are Krm500, Bamsefar75, and CLAES.

New Jersey Devils task force

This task force was initiated by Bsroiaadn. Its goal is to improve New Jersey Devils to Featured Topic status. Although it currently meets the required article count, the task force wishes to improve it further. Its area of coverage is very similar to the Sweden Ice Hockey task force. Its members are Bsroiaadn, JHMM13, FutureNJGov, Sportskido8, Michael Greiner, JRWalko, and Soxrock.

Requested Images

By Maxim
After discussion on the WikiProject talk page, Serte created a page for Requested Images. The page encourages users to license images for use on articles. The page also has section to request images for players, arenas, game situations, miscellaneous, and team and league logos. The page has been quite popular; since it was created on July 21, there have been six completed requests. There are four currently outstanding requests:

Article assessement completed

By Maxim
On July 12, Kaiser matias announced that he had completed assessing all the articles with a {{ice hockey}} tag, sorting them into Category:Unassessed Ice Hockey articles. Kaiser matias has ranked about 9000 articles in that category, and most were stubs, and "have no information at all", according to him. Everybody is encouraged to expand the stubs into real articles. This effort took around 5 months. A big thanks goes to Kaiser matias from me and all the project.

New recognized content

By Maxim

Especially due to the featured topic drive, there have been many new featured lists promoted concerning NHL awards. Here's the full list of all the 13 FL's promoted since the last newsletter.[1][2]

  1. Featured article Hart Memorial Trophy
  2. Featured article James Norris Memorial Trophy
  3. Featured article Vezina Trophy
  4. Featured article Conn Smythe Trophy
  5. Featured article Frank J. Selke Trophy
  6. Featured article Lady Byng Memorial Trophy
  7. Featured article Lester B. Pearson Award
  8. Featured article Calder Memorial Trophy
  9. Featured article Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy
  10. Featured article King Clancy Memorial Trophy
  11. Featured article Jack Adams Award
  12. Featured article Presidents' Trophy
  13. Featured article List of Calgary Flames players

There have been no new good articles or featured articles. Maurice 'Rocket' Richard Trophy has been given A-Class status due to multiple issues raised at FLC.

  1. ^ The last one, List of Calgary Flames players, is the only one not associated with the featured topic drive.
  2. ^ At the time of publishing, there were 5 lists at WP:FLC and 2 lists in the "Holding cell", as there's been an accepted guideline to not put more that 5 trophy lists at the same time to, "compensate for the sanity of the reviewers".

Did You Know?

By Maxim
There have been 4 new articles featured in the Did You Know section? on the Main Page since August.

...that Wally Tatomir, head equipment manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, holds four patents on ice hockey-related equipment?

...that ice hockey player Mark Major attained 355 penalty minutes during the 1997-98 AHL season for the Portland Pirates, where he averaged 4.5 penalty minutes a game and still holds the club record?

...that Garth Butcher was a member of Canada's first-ever gold medal team at the World Junior Ice Hockey Championships before becoming a pest and setting team records for penalty minutes in the National Hockey League?

..that the AMP NHL Winter Classic is scheduled to be the first regular-season outdoor National Hockey League game in the United States?

Featured Topic Drive

By Maxim

Started by User:Scorpion0422, the aim of this drive is to make NHL awards a featured topic. A featured topic is basically a set of very high quality articles (good articles and featured articles/lists). In this case, the topic is NHL awards. Many users have helped, including Scorpion0422, Resolute, Serte, Hasek is the best, Maxim, Croat Canuck, Spike Wilbury, FutureNJGov, and T Rex/Dinosaur puppy. The progress has been very good; there are 12 featured lists promoted, and 2 good articles:

  1. Featured article Hart Memorial Trophy (Scorpion)
  2. Featured article James Norris Memorial Trophy (Scorpion)
  3. Featured article Vezina Trophy (Scorpion)
  4. Featured article Conn Smythe Trophy (Serte)
  5. Featured article Frank J. Selke Trophy (FutureNJGov)
  6. Featured article Lady Byng Memorial Trophy (Scorpion)
  7. Featured article Lester B. Pearson Award (Scorpion)
  8. Featured article Calder Memorial Trophy (Croat Canuck)
  9. Featured article Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy (Maxim)
  10. Featured article King Clancy Memorial Trophy (Maxim)
  11. Featured article Jack Adams Award (Maxim)
  12. Featured article Presidents' Trophy (Scorpion)
  13. Good article Stanley Cup (Earlier collaboration, very many involved)
  14. Good article Traditions and anecdotes associated with the Stanley Cup (Maxim)

Check the project page if you are interested in helping out. Although it's closer to being done than not, there's still work to be done. The next topic that might be tackled is Stanley Cup, but this remains purely speculative and in discussion.

[edit] Wind That Shakes the Barley music

What do you mean musically by "reinvented"? Is Pearse the performer or the composer? Did he reinterpret the song? Or did he add new lyrics or other new musical content? It's unclear as written. Thanks. --Melty girl 20:13, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

I just fixed it from 'created to reinvented'. The song was originally a Jacobite song, from the Williamite War in Ireland. It was about Queen Maeve, the pirate queen. Pearse added some stanzas and used it as an IRA song, thus reinventing it and increasing its popularity.
Musically, "reinvented" isn't really the correct term, since he didn't touch the music. True, he gave it new life, but that's a social phenomenon, not a musical one. It is probably more correct to say that he "added verses". But I think the real problem here is that in The Wind That Shakes the Barley, there just isn't enough information about the song to help readers make sense of the clause about Pearse if they don't already know the whole story. "Amongst the songs on the film's soundtrack is 'Oró Sé do Bheatha 'Bhaile', a song revised by Padraig Pearse," is very vague. It only raises questions. Why should I care about this particular song? Who is Pearse? Who wrote it originally? I think it needs to explain in full what the significance and origin of the song is if it's going to be mentioned at all. --Melty girl 20:49, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
Okay, if someone else doesnt edit it, I will elaborate on the subject. But right now I got to go to work. :) -RiverHockey 20:51, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
What do you mean, "go to work"? You don't just stay on Wikipedia all day while the bills pile up?! ;) Oops, gotta go, my boss is approaching... --Melty girl 20:52, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] George Barret, Sr.

I don't care what one library in Monaco says. The canonical spelling, via reliable sources - specifically the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography and Tate Gallery - is Barret. If you have some reliable source(s) that say it's Barrett, cite it/them and we can include it as an alternative. Gordonofcartoon 02:07, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

It is already cited [1], intially by the user MadMax who created the article. Barrett's last name is ambiguous as he was born into the Barrett family but somehow lost a t through the years. -RiverHockey 19:08, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Artists

I just reverted you on Juan de Flandes, as no-one knows when or where he was born, or indeed what his real name was. A different approximate date was already in the article.

I've also noticed that many of your very useful new articles on artists call them "illustrators". The WP article illustrator begins, pretty accurately: "An illustrator is a graphic artist who specializes in enhancing writing by providing a visual representation that corresponds to the content of the associated text. The illustration may be intended to clarify complicated concepts or objects that are difficult to describe textually, or the illustration may be intended for entertainment, as in greeting cards, or cover art or interior art for books and magazines, or for advertisement, as on posters."

- If they are mainly painters, just use that, or artist. They might also be Printmakers, which can be added.

But keep up the good work! Johnbod (talk) 20:33, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Culloden spat (third time lucky with signature)

Just thought you might want to draw a line under our spat before one of us gets blocked for edit warring. Given that we seem likely to remain in disagreement, we might proceed by tagging anything either of us thinks dubious as needing a citation rather than removing it, at least as the default first step.80.229.9.98 (talk) 08:49, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

I am not edit warring just fixing your troublesome edits. All you do is try to justify the massacre, which violates POV...... -RiverHockey (talk) 19:15, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
Regarding your comment on my talk page, your opinion of the sources is something for the talk page to discuss with other editors. Your edit summary did not question the reliability of the sources, though, it suggested that you reverted a "biased entry from troublesome user". This in itself is a POV.
As I noted to 80.229.9.98, an assumption of good faith, followed by talk page discussion is the way to improve this article, not revert wars with snide comments about each other. 80.229.9.98 is learning what is and is not acceptable, but unless you explain and improve his edits rather than just revert them, its difficult for anyone to learn. I suggest you take up his offer of how to work together in a collaborative and constructive manner and explain your concerns about his sources, and provide alternative ones, rather than just dismissing them. Rockpocket 20:08, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

I don't attempt to justify anything - all I do is add relevant contextual information that leaves readers in a better position to judge for themselves whether or not anything is 'justified' (if they really want to do anything so amateurish as make such value judgements). My interest is in establishing what happened & why, not in identifying 'Good Things' & 'Bad Things'. I suggest that RiverHockey examines his own attitudes & considers the possibility that he has formed a sentimental attachment to certain parties that has the potential to cloud judgement.80.229.9.98 (talk) 20:47, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

It still seems you are trying to justify the massacre, there were many more atrocities committed by the British side; and using one to justify the other will lead to nowhere. Although my source is not as specific as yours it's definitely not a coffee table book (as you claimed in the Culloden page discussion), and your sources are mostly written by a "Covenanter" point of view; which would explain the defense of their faith and its advocates reputations by producing an excuse for such a massacre. Likewise I suggest you to consider the possibility that you've formed sentimental attachments to the Williamite cause as you have expressed via your acerbic criticism of the Jacobites. -RiverHockey (talk) 23:55, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] AfD question: Recombinant text

I have very little experience in AfD matters, and am asking for your input before nominating an article for deletion, because, quite frankly, I do not want to be seen as someone who capriciously nominates articles which do not meet AfD standards.

If you have time, please take a look at this article. It was created by the person who—as the intro asserts—is the very person who coined the term. Most of the edits are by that person. Most, if not all, of the sources link back to this person. I mean, at best it appears to me to constitute OR, at worst, self-promotion. But maybe I'm seeing it wrong. What do you think?

I selected you and many other editors pretty much completely at random; I picked one day's AfD archives, and clicked on the talk pages of the first two or three dozen editors' talk pages I came across. I hope that in using this selection method, I will get editors who are well-versed in AfD policies, yet who also represent a good cross-section of AfD philosophies. I will monitor your talk page for your response. Thanks. Unschool (talk) 07:09, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] All Shall Perish

Just saw your post on Wikipedia talk:Articles for deletion.

When you're nominating an article for AFD, please put something useful into the edit summary. "AFD" will do. Secondly, the AFD tag you added is pointing to the old deletion debate. You need to use {{afdx}} instead. My own personal cheat sheet is at User:Kingboyk/Deletiontools if that's any help to you. --kingboyk (talk) 20:22, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

Thanks I had asked how to create a second AFD for an article that's been recreated without consensus, you are the first to respond. -RiverHockey (talk) 20:23, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

No problem, I'm busy today but as soon as I get a chance I'll trace all of his edits as well. -RiverHockey (talk) 12:17, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] WikiProject Ice Hockey March 2008 Newsletter

edit

WikiProject Ice Hockey Newsletter

Dear RiverHockey! You are receiving as you are a member of WikiProject Ice Hockey There's been many more new things going on at WP:HOCKEY, and I think this will help you to stay informed. Since the last newsletter sent out in October, there have been many new changes. I'm hoping to make this newsletter a bit more regular; Kaiser matias and Skudrafan1 asked for a new issue a week ago, but sadly, I've been a bit lazy and committed to other things hence this other delay. --Maxim(talk)

New recognized content

There has been numerous new recognized content, so much that it's too time-consuming to sift through the "trophy cases" on WP:HOCKEY. Some interesting achievements:

Task forces

By Maxim

There was a new taskforce created within the WikiProject to deal with topics related to the Boston Bruins. It was originally founded as a separate WikiProject, but was quickly turned into a taskforce within WikiProject Ice Hockey. The list of participants is located here. Located at WP:BRUINS, the taskforce's goals are to make Boston Bruins and Bobby Orr featured articles. Good luck!

New Administrators

By Maxim
Since October, there have been three new admins promoted within the project:

A previously admin-only feature has been made available for all users. The rollback feature allows a user to quickly revert vandalism with one click. If you wish to have rollback, contact an active admin or post a request to WP:RFR.

Featured Topic Drive

By Maxim

The original featured topic drive, initiated by Scorpion0422, has concluded succesfully. National Hockey League awards is now a featured topic, with 24 articles in total. Of them, 20 are featured lists, one is a featured article, and the other three are trophy articles that were too short to become featured lists. Eight users signed up to help out, shown here. The next Featured Topic hasn't been decided upon, and the ideas and organization for it fell apart. If you have any ideas, don't hesitate to share them at WT:HOCKEY.

Notes

  • More editors are needed to help out with the newsletter. Maxim doesn't have an infinite nor perfect supply of ideas, and thus he might omit some interesting news.
  • Portal:Ice hockey is being considered for featured status. Feel free to nominate features at Portal:Ice hockey/Suggestions.
  • Should Chris Pronger have been suspended for more than eight games for stomping on Ryan Kesler? Vote here!

[edit] Category:Civilians killed in World War II

Can you create some subcategories like Category:Painters killed in World War II, Category:Actors killed in World War II etc. The main category need to be populated and such specific categories will be helpful. Otolemur crassicaudatus (talk) 16:07, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Category:Civilians killed in World War II

You're welcome. I will try to find more, I was reading just last week about an American musician killed in the Blitz, but I can't remember his name... jwillbur 00:03, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Second Battle of Athenry

Hey, just curious to why you deleted the majority of the article? I added a brief sourced synopsis of the battle and its effects. Any suggestions? -RiverHockey (talk) 23:38, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi there. Sorry for not getting back to you earlier. I deleted much of the article because I realised that parts of it was original research. In any case, I know of some articles currently been written which will be published in history journals, and which can be drawn upon for the article. Heck of a battle, but it saved the day. [edit] Eoghan/Owen

Hi RiverHockey,

I'm rather new to Wikipedia so I don't know the answer to this.

I saw that an article on Owen Roe O'Sullivan (Eoghan Ruadh Ó Súilleabháin) was a stub with more information requested, and I happened to have a few books and articles about him; so I wrote most of the article. Today I checked back and I see that you have written a different entry, but under the Irish version of the name.

The two versions should be merged, since they refer to a single person. I have a preference for Owen Roe since we are writing in English, but I don't feel strongly about it. I'm not quite sure how to go about the merge, though.

In the meantime, there seems to be a bad (red) link in the Eoghan Ruadh article, because it should go to the Owen Roe article and instead it goes to the sandbox. Do you know how to fix this? You seem to have a lot more experience on wikipedia than I do so maybe I hope you know what to do. Thanks for any help.

Evangeline (talk) 08:20, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

Hey Evangeline, how's it going? I merely just showed the English language version of his name, have no intentions of making a separate page for the English name. I will redirect Owen Roe O'Sullivan to Eoghan Ruadh Ó Súilleabháin as to avoid any confusion. -RiverHockey (talk) 18:12, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi RiverHockey, The thing is, I had already written quite a long article using the English version of the name, but it isn't linked to this page and should be until they are merged. I tried to insert a link but it's not working, not sure why. --Evangeline (talk) 05:38, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
Should be fixed now. -RiverHockey (talk) 19:21, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks-- Sorry, still learning! Evangeline (talk) 21:01, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
No problem. -RiverHockey (talk) 22:06, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Robert Fagan

Sorry, when I went to the page to see why it had been tagged, it read as follows:

Is a great guy. He is in the ninth grade in Pascack Hills High School and is a really good singer. He is in chamber choir with Ms. Tammi Wyka and currently runs a 3.8 GPA record. He has two older brothers who live in california, and a mother named Eileen who loves the song, "Come on Eileen". He is really cool and I'm glad he is still around.
--Logan

I've reviewed the history to find out what went wrong, and discovered a new user had vandalized it, then another user, who did not review the history, tagged it. (I also did not bother to review the history, and therefore deleted it.) I've restored it with the vandalism so you can see it in the history, and reverted it to the last good version. Sorry for any inconvenience. Cheers and happy editing! - CobaltBlueTony™ talk 12:09, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

No problem; it happens. - CobaltBlueTony™ talk 17:57, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Irish artists

It would be great if some images were added to Willem Van der Hagen's page. I noticed a red link after his name in the list of Irish artists, so I decided to attempt to write something about him. As for Du Noyer, I am interested in history and after reading a little about him, I decided to buy a booklet on him a few years ago at the National Gallery of Ireland. It was a pretty good booklet, and as he had no page I decided to create one. I may update a few more pages over the coming weeks, if that's O.K. - as I have a few more books with relevant info.
