User:Skudrafan1 (born June 4, 1981 in Springville, New York, USA) is a Wikipedia editor best-known for his association with WikiProject Ice Hockey. Skudrafan1 made his debut edit on Wikipedia on September 16, 2005, after learning about the site in a class at SUNY Cortland. His username is derived from his appreciation of former National Hockey League goaltender Peter Skudra.
As of June 5, 2008, Skudrafan1 has made over 17,700 edits on the English version of Wikipedia. In the most recent (May 23, 2008) update of the List of Wikipedians by number of edits, Skudrafan1 is ranked #1,082. A large percentage of Skudrafan1's edits on Wikipedia are minor, with many concerning categorization of articles. He also is very active in the creation of ice hockey player biographies, creating over 400 to date.

[edit] Early life and education
The son of dairy farmers, Skudrafan1 was raised in Cherry Creek, New York, and attended Pine Valley Central School in South Dayton, New York. After graduating high school in 1999, Skudrafan1 attended Jamestown Community College in Jamestown, New York, and earned an associate's degree in humanities. While at JCC, Skudrafan1 gained local acclaim for his work as the school's mascot, the Jayhawk. He then transferred to SUNY Fredonia, where he also worked as the mascot (the Blue Devil).
Skudrafan1 transferred to SUNY Cortland after just one semester at Fredonia State, though, and decided not to continue his career as a mascot. He majored in professional writing at Cortland State but dropped out in 2003, just one semester away from graduation. Skudrafan1 took a job at a convenience store in Jamestown, and later became manager of a store in Falconer, New York. After two years, he realized that he needed to finish his education and returned to SUNY Cortland in the fall of 2005. After one semester, Skudrafan1 earned his bachelor's degree.
Deciding to continue his education, Skudrafan1 applied for and was accepted into the master's program in secondary education at Cortland. In December 2007, he earned his M.A.T. degree.
[edit] Wikipedia career
[edit] 2005
Skudrafan1's Wikipedia edits were sparse during his early career. His first edit to the site came on September 16, when he fixed the county seat on the entry for his home county of Chautauqua County, New York[1]. He created his user page, just one sentence in length, on September 23[2], and he created his first new article (Timmy Smith) on September 30[3]. All told, though, Skudrafan1 would make just eleven edits to Wikipedia during the calendar year 2005[4].
Despite his low number of edits, Skudrafan1 was becoming quickly interested with the idea of colloborative knowledge and the specific workings of Wikipedia. He made a blog post on the topic for class, regarding an edit conflict he encountered while attempting to edit Chicago White Sox[5]. Unbeknownest to Skudrafan1 at the time was the fact that the editor who beat him to the punch was User:Croat Canuck, who later would become his esteemed colleague at WP:Ice Hockey.
[edit] 2006
Skudrafan1 first dove into repeatedly updating a Wikipedia article when he discovered the entry for NFL playoffs, 2005-06. Between January 15 and January 23, he made 110 edits to the page, often updating box scores and statistics mid-games. Skudrafan1 would top that total during the 2006 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament, as he would edit that tournament's page (most often the brackets) 115 times. Skudrafan1 also became an American Idol junkie that spring, making 83 edits to the American Idol (Season 5) entry and 70 to the List of songs performed on American Idol.
After his addiction to Wikipedia became public, Skudrafan1 was asked to create an entry for Inexcusable, a novel being read in a graduate class in young adult literature at SUNY Cortland. He did so[6] and presented the entry in class, where he instructed his classmates on how to edit the page themselves and make it a classroom project. Unfortunately, no fellow students made any edits to the page following Skudrafan1's presentation, and the project was soon abandoned[7].
[edit] Involvement with WP:NYSR
Skudrafan1, mostly on a whim, became involved with WP:New York State routes in the spring of 2006. He created articles for approximately 25 New York State Routes, mostly dealing with roads in his familiar areas of Western and Central New York. One of these articles, New York State Route 174, has since become a featured article; however, this is due to the efforts of other editors (notably User:Mitchazenia and User:TwinsMetsFan) and Skudrafan1 does not attempt to claim any stake in their glory. His interest in state route articles was mostly fleeting. Presently, Skudrafan1 is only a very infrequent editor of state route articles.
[edit] Involvement with WP:HOCKEY
Skudrafan1 became involved with WikiProject:Ice Hockey during the 2006 Stanley Cup Playoffs. He made a staggering 442 edits to the Playoffs article[8] and, in the process, became familiar with many of the project's other editors and with the project's policies.
In June 2006, Skudrafan1 began making edits to various NHL Entry Draft articles, removing linking from players who did not have articles, leading to a brief disagreement with former high-profile WP:HOCKEY editor User:BoojiBoy. Skudrafan1 quickly realized BoojiBoy's argument was correct and, instead of removing the links, began focusing on creating articles for NHL first-round draft picks which to that point were not created. This soon led to Skudrafan1 receiving his first barnstar, from none other than BoojiBoy.
Skudrafan1 soon noticed that no articles existed for any of the various NHL expansion drafts which have occured over the years. In a daunting task, he created articles for each of the eleven expansion drafts which have taken place in the NHL since 1970. This earned Skudrafan1 further recognition from the WP:HOCKEY community, and his second barnstar (this time from User:RGTraynor).
[edit] 2007
In early 2007, Skudrafan1 fine-tuned his focus to editing mostly pages regarding his beloved Buffalo Sabres. Articles such as 2006-07 Buffalo Sabres season, List of Buffalo Sabres players, and Buffalo Sabres draft history have been edited extensively by Skudrafan1. He was successful in removing all the red links from List of Buffalo Sabres players, as well as in creating articles for every Buffalo Sabres draft pick who ever played in the NHL. Furthermore, he was responsible for upgrading List of Buffalo Sabres players from a simple list of names to a list complete with seasons played, statistics, and photographs, adding over 33Kb worth of data to the article in the process[9].
On March 26, Skudrafan1 received his first small piece of Wikipedia-wide glory when Jiří Dudáček, an article about a former Buffalo Sabres first-round draft pick which he created on March 21[10], was featured on the front page in the did you know? section. The text, as written by Skudrafan1, read the following: "...that Jiri Dudacek, the first Czechoslovak ice hockey player to be selected in the first round of the National Hockey League draft, never left Czechoslovakia due to the protests of the country's sports minister?"
On July 31, Skudrafan1 aimed for further glory when he nominated Buffalo Sabres draft history for promotion to a featured list; however, a consensus was not reached.
On August 25, after seeing a template showing first-round draft picks of an NFL team, Skudrafan1 made a template showing first-round draft picks of the Buffalo Sabres. He posted a message on the talk page of WP:HOCKEY showing the template and gauging interest in having similar templates created for all NHL teams. While the response was less-than-overwhelming, Skudrafan1 decided to do so anyway. Over the course of just a few days, he created templates showing all first-round draft picks in NHL history and placed the appropriate template on the biography page of every player ever drafted in the first-round. While the templates received little fanfare, they rank among the creations Skudrafan1 is most proud of: not so much for their content, but for the amount of work they required and the speed with which they were completed.
Skudrafan1 was very excited about the AMP Energy NHL Winter Classic, which is evidenced by the fact that he created an article about it and nominated it for a Did You Know within three hours of its announcement. The DYK was approved and the article appeared on the main page on September 22. Skudrafan1 had another article featured in DYK two weeks later: David Quinn (ice hockey) on October 4. Skudrafan1 had his third DYK honor in just over a month on October 30, when Marc Laforge hit the front page. Another DYK, Jaroslav Jiřík, appeared on the main page on December 12.
[edit] 2008
After the AMP Energy NHL Winter Classic took place, the article grew immensely. Skudrafan1 worked on tidying it up and referencing all facts, and he began having a dream of having it promoted to a Good Article. However, he became a little lax in his efforts and the article was not nominated until February 17, when User:Bmitchelf got to it. The article passed as a GA on March 9.
Skudrafan1 also had an article promoted to a featured list in early 2008, as List of Buffalo Sabres players received the honor on February 1. And while Skudrafan1 was not the key contributor to List of Tampa Bay Lightning players, he did receive "due credit" from User:Kaiser matias in its FLC nomination for his efforts to clean it up and his work to eliminate all the red links. The list acheived featured status on March 8.
[edit] Re-involvement with WP:NYSR
Skudrafan1 found himself once again involved with the New York State Routes WikiProject in March 2008, when he decided to begin adding photographs of road signs to articles. His addition of photographs to New York State Route 380 helped it be promoted to a Good Article on April 9,[11] and the photos he added to New York State Route 394 helped it be promoted to a Good Article on April 14.[12]
[edit] Personal life
Skudrafan1 currently lives in Cherry Creek, New York with his kitten Quynh. He is currently employed as a copy editor at the The Post-Journal in Jamestown, New York. His hobbies include Where's George? (where his user name is "The Great Gazoo") and geocaching (forming a team with his fiancée Carrie, named "davee-n-cachincarrie"), and he is ranked among the top 50 in New York State in both[13][14].
He and Carrie have been dating for six years. They met while working together at Midway Park in Maple Springs, New York, during the summer of 2000. They are scheduled to be married on October 18, 2008.
