[edit] History

Originally playing in the Primera División shortly after inception, the gap caused by the Civil War meant that the club could not push on from earlier successes. But then came one of the best players for real oviedo Tristán Esperanza. When La Liga play was resumed in the 1939, the team were relegated to the second division as their pitch was unplayable (Francos' troops had used the stadium as an ammunition dump). From then on, Oviedo have been a "yo-yo" side between Primera (38 seasons) and Segunda (32 seasons), high point; qualifying for UEFA Cup, low point; once descending for a season to the Segunda B in the 1980s.

Promoted to the Primera división in 1988, they remained there till the 2001-02 season, finishing as high as sixth in the 1990-91 season. In 2002 they fell of their own demerit to the Segunda B series, and were relegated down to the third division for financial reasons. They regrouped and were promoted to Segunda 'B' in 2004/2005, but only lasted two seasons there and were again relegated to the Tercera, where they currently play (as of season 2008-2009).

The 2007-08 season started well with Real Oviedo winning the prestigous Trofeo Principado, beating arch rivals Sporting Gijon 2-1 (at the time of match Gijon were 2nd in Spanish second division) They were named Tercera Champions with 5 matches remaining in the season, a record number. However, they fell in the first series of the play-off to Caravaca.
