Rangers played a total of 49 competitive matches during the 2004-05 season. went into the season desperate to recapture their Scottish Premier League crown which had gone, pretty much uncontested, to rivals Celtic the season before. McLeish made some canny summer signings with the signature of Frenchman Jean-Alain Boumsong being his biggest coup. Others included strikers Dado Prso and Nacho Novo, as well as the experienced midfielder Alex Rae and cult hero Marvin Andrews.

The season began badly, with some poor performances in the league which resulted in a haul of just 8 point from there first 5 matches, and failure to qualify for the Champions League after being knocked out by Russian side CSKA Moscow.
