Rødøy is a municipality in the county of Nordland, Norway.
Rødøy was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). Meløy was separated from Rødøy January 1, 1884.
The municipality consists of islands outside Norway's second biggest glacier, Svartisen.
[edit] The name
The Norse form of the name was Rauðøy. The first element is rauðr 'red' (probably referring to the colour of the rocks of the island), the last element is øy f 'island'.
[edit] Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1988). The highest mountain of the island is called Rødøyløva 'the lion of Rødøy' (because its profile resembles a lion, [1]). However, there are higher mountains in the municipality, such as Blokktind.
