Flakstad is a municipality in the county of Nordland, Norway.
Flakstad was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). Moskenes was separated from Flakstad July 1, 1916. (Flakstad was merged with Moskenes in the period 1964-1976.)
[edit] The name
The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old farm Flakstad (Norse Flakstaðir), since the first church was built there. The meaning of the first element is unknown, the last element is staðir 'homestead, farm'.
[edit] Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1989). It shows a fastening for boats.
