Dønna is a municipality in the county of Nordland, Norway.
Dønna (until 1962 named Dønnes) was separated from Nesna July 1, 1888. Nordvik was merged with Dønna January 1, 1962.
The municipality is located on the coast of the Helgeland landscape.
[edit] The name
The municipality is named after the island Dønna (Norse Dyn). Some people believe that the name of the island is derived from the Norse verb dynja 'rumble, roar' (referring to the swell of the waves on the island).
[edit] Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1981). It shows a wave.
