Hemnes is a municipality in the county of Nordland, Norway.
The old municipality of Rana was divided into Hemnes (until 1844 named Sør-Rana) and Nord-Rana in 1839. Korgen was separated from Hemnes July 1, 1918. Sør-Rana and Elsfjord were separated from Hemnes July 1, 1929. (After this the municipality of Hemnes only consisted of the village of Hemnesberget.) Korgen and Sør-Rana were again merged with Hemnes January 1, 1962.
The lake Røssvatnet (Reevhtse in Sami) is a lake and reservoir lying partially in Hemnes; it has been the site of human occupation since the Stone Age. Its area of 219 km² makes it the second largest lake in Norway by surface area.
[edit] The name
The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old farm Hemnes (Norse Heimnes), since the first church was built there. The first element is heimr m 'home' (here in the sense 'closest to home'), the last element is nes n 'headland'.
[edit] Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1986). It shows a clip used for production of boats.
