Four riders competed in the two road cycling events.[4] Sérgio Paulinho, the only rider listed in both events, ended surprisingly as runner-up in the road race, behind gold medalist Paolo Bettini, collecting Portugal's first medal ever in Olympic cycling.

The men's national under-21 football team secured the last European slot for the men's Olympic football tournament in virtue of reaching the third place at the 2004 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship.
The team played in group D with Costa Rica, Iraq and Morocco. It lost both the opening match against Iraq and final match against Costa Rica, with a single victory over the Moroccan team, thus finishing last in the group with no chance of progressing in the tournament. Overall, Portugal finished in the fourteenth place out of sixteen teams.[7]

Two gymnasts competed in events of artistic gymnastics and, for the first time, in the trampoline discipline. Nuno Merino managed to qualify for the men's trampoline final and outscore two of his qualifying opponents, securing a sixth placing.[8]
