Greece was the host nation for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. The delegation of 441 athletes, 223 men and 218 women, was represented by the Hellenic Olympic Committee (HOC). It was the largest Greek Olympic team since the first modern Olympic Games in Athens, Greece in 1896. At those games, 240 Greek athletes competed, most notably Spiridon Louis who won the marathon.
