The Philippine national football team, nicknamed the Azkals (which is derived from askal or asong kalye, the Tagalog colloquial term for street dog), is the national team of the Philippines and is controlled by the Philippine Football Federation (PFF).[2]

Despite being one of the oldest national teams in Asia, the Philippines has never had any significant success on the international stage. They are currently one of the weakest teams in the world and did not enter the qualification for the 2006 or 2010 FIFA World Cup tournaments in order to focus more on developing youth football and gaining international experience in regional tournaments such as the Southeast Asian Games.

Football, however, is very popular and is in fact played by many people in the provinces of Iloilo, particularly in the municipality of Barotac Nuevo, the province of Negros Occidental and in the Mindanao islands.

In September 2006 the country fell to 195th on the FIFA ranking scale, its lowest ever. By the end of the year, the Philippines moved back up to 171th overall, after qualifying for the 2007 ASEAN Football Championship with a 4-1 win over Brunei. However, their failure to advance from the preliminaries dropped the country's ranking to 179th. The recent string of poor performances caused the Philippines to refuse to enter the qualification stages for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.^[1]

The German Bundesliga recently expressed its willingness to help the development of football in the country.

Current 2008 AFC Challenge Cup Kit

In March 9, 2008 THE Philippine Football Federation has a signed three-year, P9-million contract with Mizuno Corporation to become the PFF’s official outfitter and a major partner in its grassroots development programs.^[2]

The Home kit Jersey colors now appears in an all Red combination. Red Jersey, Red Shorts and Red Socks. The Away kit colors comes similarly in an all White combination. Red Jersey, Red Shorts and Red Socks.

Past Kit History :

Previous manufacturers were Adidas and Asics.

The home kit is dark blue with a v-neck collar and has black sides. On the sleeves there is a diamond-type lining and the Philippine national flag on both. The Mizuno logo is on the left-hand side and the logo of the PFF is on the right-hand side. The numbering is on the middle. The away jersey is no longer red, but rather white with light blue sides. It has the same characteristics as the home kit. The Philippines traditionally had red away jerseys.

Replica Kit Availablity

In previous years. Fans have always complained they could never purchase any PFF Football Replica Kits authentic or fakes. Past kit sponsors and the PFF never made any effort to making it available for sale to the general public. So it was a welcome sight for fans when Mizuno started to make it available at any Philippine Mizuno stores. Currently the 2008 PFF kits, Jersey or Shorts are each sold for Php 1,999.95
