Pennsylvania Route 171 is a 40 mile long north-south state highway located in northeast Pennsylvania. The southern terminus of the route is at U.S. Route 6 Business in Carbondale. The northern terminus is officially located at the southbound on-ramp to Interstate 81 in Great Bend; however, signage for PA 171 is present at an intersection with U.S. Route 11 a mere 250 feet to the west of I-81.
[edit] History
From 1928 to 1961, PA 171 was known as Pennsylvania Route 70. In 1961, all of PA 70 except a segment between the New York-Pennsylvania border (where PA 70 met New York State Route 7A) and US 11 south of Great Bend in Hallstead was redesignated PA 171.[1][2]
Although the New York-Hallstead stretch has been decommissioned for over 40 years, it is still shown as PA 70 on some maps.[3]
