NSB El 18 is the main electric locomotive used by Norges Statsbaner hauling all locomotive-based express trains in Norway. The 22 units delivered in 1996-97 are based on SBB Re 460, built by ADtranz and numbered 18 2241 to 18 2262.
[edit] History
During the 1980s NSB ordered 17 successful El 16 and 12 unsuccessful El 17 locomotives. By the 1990s the brand-new El 17 needed replacement, as well as the older El 11. A Swiss engine was tested from August 28 to October 8, 1993 in Norway, as was the German EuroSprinter was tested, but NSB preferred the Swiss model. The Norwegian model has a wider pantograph and the drivers seat on the right.[1]
When NSB was split into a passenger- and freight company in 1996 the El 18 and El 17 where the only locomotives transfered to passenger section. After the El 17 was transfered to Flåmsbana in 1998 the El 18 remains the only mainline locomotive for passenger trains in Norway. It is used on Bergensbanen, Dovrebanen and Sørlandsbanen in express trains, and sometimes on rush hour trains on Vestfoldbanen.[1]
