New York State Route 146 (NY 146) is a state highway in New York, running from Gallupville at NY 443 to near Mechanicville at US 4 and NY 32, a total of just under 43 miles (69 km). Route 146 is a major thoroughfare in the city of Schenectady, just outside of Albany. At one time, NY 146 had three spur routes; only one—NY 146A—still exists.

The route once followed a different routing southwest of Altamont to a terminus in Berne. On its northern end, the route initially entered Mechanicville before it was realigned to bypass the city.

[edit] Route description

[edit] Schoharie and Albany Counties

NY 146 begins at a "T"-intersection in Gallupville, a hamlet within the town of Wright.[3] Route 146 spends only 4.24 miles (6.82 km) in Schoharie County, stretching from Route 443 to the Albany County border. The first intersection is with County Route 26 (Larry Hill Road) just over 1 mile (1.6 km) from NY 443. Three miles (4.8 km) later, Route 146 leaves Schoharie County for Albany County. After crossing into Albany County, Route 146 changes directions from south to east and heads towards Albany, the capital of New York. In the Knox hamlet of West, NY 146 intersects County Route 259. As Route 146 reaches the hamlet of East a short time later, it meets County Routes 252, 260, 261, and 262 in quick succession. Route 146 then enters the village of Altamont.[4]

Route 397 begins on the road that 146 vacates in Altamont, as Route 146 leaves to the south for a short distance.[4] Main Street, a small street in Altamont leaves to the right and soon reaches Route 156. After leaving Altamont, 146 continues for about 3 miles (4.8 km) before intersecting with the southern terminus of Route 158. As 146 enters the town of Guilderland, County Routes 201 and 202 leave to the left. 146 goes through Tawasentha Park and becomes concurrent with U.S. Route 20 in Hartmans Corners. The concurrency is short lived however, as 146 leaves Route 20 and enters Schenectady County. County Route 71 leaves to the left just before the interchange with Interstate 890 near Rotterdam. Route 7 is the next intersection about 2 miles (3.2 km) south of Schenectady.[5]

[edit] Schenectady and Saratoga Counties

North of NY 7, East Campbell Road (County Route 67) leaves to the east with County Route 69 crossing soon after.[6] At Glengary Road, NY 146 crosses into the Schenectady city limits. Here, maintenance of the route shifts from the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) to the city of Schenectady.[7] Five blocks later, Route 146 intersects with Altamont Avenue (unsigned NY 911H) in Schenectady just before crossing under I-890.[6] In downtown Schenectady, Route 146 (now known as Brandywine Avenue) intersects with Route 5. NY 146 remains on Brandywine to its end at Union Street, then follows Union east out of the city.[8] Upon crossing into Niskayuna, ownership of the route shifts to Schenectady County, which maintains the roadway as County Route 159. CR 159 ends five blocks later at Balltown Road (unsigned NY 914T). NY 146 turns north onto Balltown, becoming NYSDOT maintained once more in the process.[7]

3.5 miles (5.6 km) north of Union Street, NY 146 crosses over the Mohawk River and enters Saratoga County. On the north bank of the river in Clifton Park, County Routes 88 and 91 terminate at Route 146 in opposite directions. This portion of County Route 91 was once NY 146B, a former spur of 146.[8] NY 146 turns eastward three-quarters of a mile (1.2 km) later at a junction with Glenridge Road (unsigned NY 914V) and County Route 110. Just outside of Clifton Park Center, NY 146 meets NY 146A, the lone remaining spur of NY 146. Soon after the 146A intersection, the route interchanges with Interstate 87 (the Adirondack Northway) and intersects U.S. Route 9.[9] About 2 miles (3.2 km) east of US 9 in Halfmoon, Route 236 merges in from the south. NY 146 veers northward at this junction, then breaks eastward a mile (1.6 km) later. County Route 1345 continues northward from this point on the former routing of Route 146 toward Mechanicville. 146 comes to an end soon afterward at U.S. Route 4 and Route 32 south of Mechanicville on the banks of the Hudson River.[10]

[edit] History

NY 146 was assigned in the 1930 renumbering to what is now NY 156 from NY 443 in Berne to Altamont as well as to its modern routing between Altamont and Schenectady.[2] The route was extended northeast to Mechanicville by 1938 by way of Balltown Road, Blue Barns Road, Lakehill Road, Ballston Lake Road, and its current alignment from Ballston Lake Road to Pruyn Hill Road. NY 146 continued along Pruyn Hill Road, crossing Farm To Market Road (modern Saratoga CR 109), then turned eastward and entered Mechanicville via South Street, ending at New York State Route 32 and U.S. Route 4.[11]

NY 146 was realigned west of Altamont during the 1940s to follow its current routing to Gallupville, where it terminated at then-NY 43 (now NY 443). Route 146 was also rerouted in Clifton Park to follow its current alignment between Balltown Road and Ballston Lake Road during that time. The majority of the old routing between the two roads became NY 146A.[12]

The routing of NY 146 near Mechanicville was altered between 1985 and 1995 to follow its current alignment east of Pruyn Hill Road, bypassing Mechanicville to the south.[13][14] Pruyn Hill Road and South Street were redesignated as Saratoga County Road 1345, the only signed four-digit county highway in New York.

Route 146 was given a pavement upgrade in the Saratoga County area, stretching from the intersection with State Route 236 to the Mechanicville city line.[15] The resurfacing was anticipated to end in November 2004.

Although most of former NY 146 west of Altamont became part of NY 156,[12] a short section of Main Street within the village did not and is now designated as New York State Route 912C, an unsigned reference route. The one-block (officially 0.08 miles (0.13 km)) long route serves as a connector between NY 156 and NY 146, which do not meet despite both highways using Main Street as an entrance to the village.[1] Both NY 156 and NY 146 are marked with signs "To" the other route, using this one block of Main Street.

The old routing of Route 146 through Schenectady is reserved for the future designation of New York State Route 646 and the nearby Balltown Road (currently NY 914T) will be redesignated in the future as New York State Route 546.[16]

[edit] Future

The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) has identified the Route 146 corridor from Riverview Road to Glen Ridge Road as in need of future improvements. Intersection improvements are scheduled at the Route 146/Aqueduct Road/Williams Road and Route 146/Riverview Road intersections. This part of the project will be built in 2008 and is to include new turn lanes at each intersection. To the south, the Rexford Bridge over the Mohawk River and the surrounding roadway will be improved in stages, with completion expected by 2017. The objective of these projects is to improve highway capacity and safety along the corridor.[17]

[edit] Suffixed routes

As many as three spurs once led from Route 146; however, two have since been removed from the state highway system.

  • NY 146A is a short 6.38 mile road in Clifton Park and Ballston Lake. The road begins at Route 146 in Clifton Park, ending at an intersection with New York State Route 50 in Ballston Lake. The route is the only spur of NY 146 that still exists.[16]
  • NY 146B was a connector from Rexford to Grooms and Clifton Park in Saratoga County. The road stretched from Route 146 to an intersection with County Routes 90/91.[18] It is now part of County Route 91.[19]
  • NY 146C was a former spur of Route 146 in Schenectady. Known as Curry Road, Route 146C was removed from the state highway system and became part of NY 7.[20]
