Mandala Airlines is an airline based in Jakarta, Indonesia. It operates scheduled services to 20 destinations within Indonesia. Its main base is Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Jakarta, with hubs at Juanda International Airport.[1]
But as of 2007, Mandala announced that it will focus its operation in Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Jakarta and Ngurah Rai International Airport, Bali. The airline will dedicate its two Airbus A319s to its Bali hub.
Mandala Airlines is included in the European Union's Airline blacklist and is currently forbidden to fly into the European Union as of September 11, 2007.[2]

Mandala Airlines was established and started operations in 1969. It was owned 90% by Yayasan Dharma Putra Kostrad and 10% shared by Dharma, Kencana, Sakti and Nusamba. Mandala is a member of the Indonesian National Air Carriers Association endorsable ticket system allowing passengers to use tickets on any of the participating carriers. As of April 2005, Cardig International is the sole owner of Mandala Airlines. In October 2006, Indigo Partners announced it has acquired a 49% stake in Mandala Airlines with PT Cardig International Aviation retaining a 51% stake. It has 1,000 employees (at March 2007).[1]
In October 2007, Mandala transformed to become a low-cost carrier using a similar model to models used by Air Asia and Ryanair.
On November 2,2007 Mandala’s first priority is Safety and has already been placed in Safety Category 1 by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).[3]
In January 2008, Singapore Airlines Engineering Company (SIAEC) has been appointed as Mandala’s Airbus fleet maintenance provider for aircraft[4]
On March 27,2008 Indonesia has opted for the fast track and proposed that the ban be lifted on Airfast Indonesia, Garuda Indonesia, Mandala Airlines and Premiair.[5]

Safety is paramount to Mandala Airlines - that message comes from the top as Mandala forges an exciting new chapter for the carrier. Brady spent three months campaigning for the stringent safety systems and culture: "The safest airline in the world invest significant resources in safety and take proactive steps to minimize risks. Mandala has an experienced international management team with the unconditional support of our owners. It has now set in place the foundations of a solid safety management system." Leading international team - Mandala has employed a professional and experienced team of airline managers from around the world.
Trusted international maintenance - Singapore Airlines Engineering Company has been contracted to maintain the Airbus Fleet. Twelve maintenance specialists from Malaysia and Singapore through FD Aviation are managing the Boeing fleet.
Safety culture - The airline has implemented the Airbus Flight Operations Monitoring System to ensure all flights are monitored and performances assessed daily. A Safety and Quality Department was set up on 1st August, 2007.
Training drive - Safety and quality training is being developed by director of flight operations, Captain Cor Blokzijl, who has flown over 20,000 hours and is an Airbus examiner and instructor.
Quality and Audits - Mandala is in the midst of an IOSA Audit Program, ensuring operations are benchmarked to International Standards. A Quality and Audit Department ensures compliance to all international standards.

Online booking saves your time and money. Here's how:
Search Flights: Under Book Flight, select Round Trip or One Way, then your departure city and destination. Choose departure and return dates, number of passengers, and Adult or Infant. Click Show Flights.
Select Flights: Select fare class, Ultra Saver or Saver. Fare shows the base fare of the flight. Infant fare will be revealed after you selecting the adult. Check the Fare Rules, then click on agreement and continue.
Input Information: Select title, input full name, full address, city name, state, zip code and country. Input mobile phone number, phone number and your email to be used by Mandala to send your new password, itenerary and Mandala flyer program. Register user ID and password.
Input Passenger Details: Select title, inser passenger name.
Input Payment Credit Card: Choose card type, Visa or MaterCard. Input your credit card number, expiry date, card holder name and CVV code. Credit card payment can only be made for booking more than 48 hours ahead.

[edit] Incidents and accidents
- On 5 September 2005 (10:06 a.m. UTC+7), a Jakarta-bound Boeing 737-200 jetliner operated by Mandala Airlines crashed into a heavily-populated residential area seconds after taking off from Polonia International Airport in Medan, Indonesia. 104 people died on board, and at least 39 persons are reported to have perished on the ground.
- On October 3, 2006, Mandala 737-200 flying from Balikpapan skidded 50 meters off the runway at Tarakan. There were no injuries. Visibility was below 400 meters at the time due to heavy haze. [6]
- On November 1, 2007, Mandala Boeing 737-200 skidded on Abdul Rachman Saleh Airport in Malang, East Java. Due to bad weather, the plane skidded and the plane's nose wheel touched the ground. No serious injury occurred, only 4 people were slightly injured out of 89 passengers and crew.

The Mandala Airlines fleet consists of the following aircraft (at March 2008):

- 5 Airbus A320-200
- 2 Boeing 737-400
- 30 ordered Airbus A320-200.[7]
New Mandala would comply with the highest international standards of airline Safety and Management has ordered 30 brand new Airbus aircraft to ensure a modern safe fleet. On top of that Mandala has contracted Singapore Airlines Engineering Company (SIAEC) to maintain the Airbus Fleet while 12 maintenance specialists from Malaysia and Singapore through FD Aviation has also been contracted to manage the Boeing fleet.
