[edit] Story

The series is about a demon, Neuro Nōgami, who feeds on mysteries, and has come to the human world after eating all the mysteries in the demon world. However, as a demon, he cannot act overtly. The first thing he does is force a high school girl to become a detective, while Neuro acts as her assistant. While it appeared to be a mystery series early on, the author has described it as "a straight forward entertainment book wearing the skin of a mystery."

[edit] Main Characters

Neuro Nōgami (脳噛 ネウロ Nōgami Neuro?)
Neuro Nōgami
Neuro Nōgami
Seiyū: Takehito Koyasu
The title character of the series, Neuro is literally a detective from Hell (Makai). He looks for mysteries and the labyrinthine mind for sustenance. As he explains it, when he dismantles the mystery and strips the culprit of all of their defenses, that releases the negative energies that caused the culprit to commit the crime, which he then consumes. He came to the human world in search of the Ultimate Mystery, as all of the mysteries in Makai were bland and repetitive. Once in the human world, he "adopted" Yako as his assistant, and began to solve mysteries. He does this because there's a rule in Makai that when the Makai inhabitants go to the human world, they must keep a low profile. In public Neuro makes Yako act as the detective, while he acts as her assistant, even though Neuro is actually doing all the detective work (though Yako occasionally figures things out herself as well). In the human world Neuro needs to sleep for three hours a day, which he spends on the ceiling. According to Neuro "Shouki is like Oxygen to a demon" and (in the anime) hot springs are formed when excess Shouki comes to the surface, so the best place for him to sleep is in a hot spring. As Yako points out, he comes to the human world because eating is more important to him than oxygen.
He is a very self-centered, sadistic and arrogant character that cares little about the human aspect of the cases, most of the time only focusing about getting the mystery as quick as he can. This can be a disadvantage, however, as he can't relate to or begin to understand the motives of the culprits and thus miss vital information (With Yako usually explaining)He's also not above blackmailing or manipulating others to achieve his goals
Neuro enjoys abusing and torturing Yako at every chance he gets, and thinks of her as nothing more than a slave to use at the beginning of their 'partnership'. However, recently, there have been a handful of times where he seems to care for her: saving her from injury more than once by explosions, and comforting her at the end of the Hal arc (even though he pinned her to the ceiling and spoke roughly) and even stating during his battle with X that seeing her struggling to find her own potential was "very pleasant". A little before the HAL arc he was constantly telling her to 'evolve' and become more useful to him. From his actions then, it is possible that Neuro expects quite a bit from Yako, expressing disappointment, approval and even pride at certain times.
As a demon, he shows his inhuman abilities in the early chapters of the series, making him seemingly invincible against human weapons such as catching a bullet with just his eyelashes. But as the story progresses, Neuro has received injuries by several criminals. Neuro implies this to X that his body "is gradually becoming more like that of an ordinary human", because of the lack of the Demon's world's Shouki in the human world and the amount of time he is spending with humans. Neuro's body may be adjusting to the Laws of Physics in the human world, although his monstrous endurance remains and ensures his survival longer than what would have killed an ordinary human. Even while his body is weakening, Neuro still was able to easily defeat the superhuman X in combat.
Neuro's true form appears to be some kind of horned bird, often revealed when he is about to feed on the released negative energy. In the manga, unlike the anime, Neuro isn't limited to solving puzzles made by crimes; he has, on at least three occasions, completely disassembled various things to find out how they worked, such as a car, a cellphone, and even a bomb.
Yako Katsuragi (桂木 弥子 Katsuragi Yako?)
Seiyū: Kana Ueda
Yako is a 16-year-old high school girl and the very first character introduced in the manga. She meets Neuro when he appears and desecrates her father's shrine while promising to help solve the mystery of her father's death. This meeting quickly leads to a partnership: Yako becomes Neuro's cover, pretending to be an investigator while Neuro acts as her assistant.
She has an insatiable appetite (which people often associate her with), and a knack for understanding human psychology that occasionally provides Neuro with information he is unable to obtain because he is unfamiliar with how humans operate. Neuro enjoys abusing her, though he does compliment her at times of success, albeit through a patronising tone.
Eishi Sasazuka (笹塚 衛士 Sasazuka Eishi?)
Seiyū: Kōji Yusa
Sasazuka is one of the two police officers assigned to solve the mystery of Yako's father's death. After Neuro solves the case of Yako's father's death, Sasazuka gives them access to crime scenes, arrests the culprits as Yako points them out, and deals in the aftermath. Sasazuka appears listless and disinterested at times but he has an agile mind, acts very quickly in any emergency, and is an excellent shot. Usually he takes a kind and cooperative attitude toward Yako, but appears to be somewhat suspicious about Neuro. A former classmate of Usui and Tsukushi's, he joined the police force to investigate X, after his family is killed on his little sister's birthday. This reason is absent in the anime.
Jun Ishigaki (石垣 筍 Ishigaki Jun?)
Seiyū: Kōsuke Toriumi
Ishigaki is a young police officer. After the mystery of Yako's father's death, Ishigaki becomes Sasazuka's new partner. As a typical modern young man, Ishigaki is flippant, careless, and has low self-respect. He idolizes Sasazuka, but does not share his feelings that citizens like Neuro and Yako can interfere with police business. He is very interested in all kinds of toys and models and is shown regularly collecting them; however, they are almost always destroyed by Sasazuka, as he finds Ishigaki's habit of showing them off (as well as Ishigaki himself) annoying.
According to the manga, his real name is Shun, but was misprinted as Jun.
Shinobu Godai (吾代 忍 Godai Shinobu?)
Seiyū:Hiroyuki Yoshino (anime), Kishō Taniyama (radio drama)
Godai worked for a small finance house with criminal connections. After Neuro won a bet against the members of the finance house by solving their boss's death, Godai was forced to work for Neuro. Neuro also won their office in the bet. He is the jack of all trades for the detective's office and is sometimes referred to as "Neuro's second slave". Godai is quick-tempered and yells a lot, but has also been shown to be methodical, responsible, and trustworthy. He has a fondness for cars and was upset after his was wrecked during the HAL arc.
In the manga Godai runs an information company under Neuro's supervision, in the anime however he only performs odd jobs for Neuro.
Akane (あかねちゃん Akane-chan?)
Akane is a corpse in the wall of the office Neuro took over, who is shown only as a detachable braid of hair, which functions like a hand. Neuro offered to make Yako brush and care for her in exchange for secretarial work. Akane can be taken from the office for short periods of time and can also merge with Yako's hair to make it longer, which not only gives Akane control over Yako's natural hair, but if left merged for too long, would make Akane and Yako switch places completely. Akane later appears (as a braid) attached to Yako's new cell phone.
Although not addressed in the anime, in the manga it is implied that Akane might not be the soul of the corpse in the wall after all, as Yako once asked herself "Sometimes I get confused... over whether she [Akane] is a part of the corpse, or just hair."
Aya Asia (アヤ・エイジア Aya Eishia?)
Seiyū:Minami Takayama
A world-class idol who comes to Neuro's office to hire the detective team to figure out who murdered her managers/friends. Her plan appears to be foiled when both Neuro and Yako incriminate her on television. The publicity of her case earns Yako a somewhat notorious reputation. Yako visits Aya at prison during the HAL arc in the manga for advice on why Neuro intends for Yako to solve HAL's password.
X (怪盗X/サイ Kaitou Sai?)
Seiyū:Romi Paku
X (or Sai) is a mysterious human with supernatural powers. He believes himself without an identity and, in a desperate attempt to find one for himself, starts taking people apart and studying their insides to find out what gives someone an identity. He is able to alter his own cellular structure to his convenience and take on the appearances of other people, though doing so makes him lose his memories, presumably creating and compounding his initial problem. Also, even though he seems to have great control over his ability, it isn't perfect; once, when he was in the form of a dog, when he changed back to his human form, he still had the ears and lower body of the dog, making him look similar to a satyr. He has also said in the manga that he hates being in boxes, implying that he was once a laboratory subject.
In the anime, he was suspected of being the murderer to Yako's father; however, he said that he couldn't remember whether or not he had killed him, as the majority of his memories were lost. Near the end of the anime it was revealed that X is the child of a supposed witch in South America named Seiren who was tortured and killed by a priest who was rejected by her 20 years ago. It is said that X witnessed the brutal murder and has been sub-concsiously trying to gain revenge while murdering people. He was the one who killed Yako's father and it is hinted that Yako's father may have been X's father as well because he had visited that area 20 years ago (before his marriage) and had been very friendly with Seiren up until her death.
However in the manga X is a modified prototype clone made by Sicks, called "Experiment.11". A female as of birth 17 years ago. Her surrogate mother is killed immediately after her birth. For 5 years after birth she is nurtured in reinforced glass confines. She is then sent out to the into the world in order to get data on cell mutation and social adaptation, after that arrangements are made to retrieve her. But the person in charge of retrieving X, Imina, supports X thus rendering the recapture impossible.
After she was recaptured by Sicks, she returned to the life of a guinea pig. Her cells are also being made use of.
Hisanori Hayasaka (早坂 久宜 Hayasaka Hisanori?)
Hayasaka Yukinori's older brother. He smuggled in weapons and drugs that he was supposed to be bringing in for the company he worked for, but was actually planning to kill his superior, Mochizuki, in order to take over. Neuro managed to stop him from doing so. Later, he and his brother started "Smiling Face Ltd.", a company front for smuggling drugs and weapons as well as black-market trading of organs and other illegal things. Hisanori is alway seen smiling.
Yukinori Hayasaka (早坂 幸宜 Hayasaka Yukinori?)
Hayasaka Hisanori's younger brother, nicknamed "Yuki". He is originally seen wearing a heavy winter coat at all times, which he uses to hide weapons. He has a great deal of respect for his older brother.
Eisuke Harukawa (春川 英輔 Harukawa Eisuke?)
Genius neurologist and computer scientist at Sakuba University. He is the creator of HAL and the Denshi Drug. After finding out that the Denshi Drug had been used by HAL on hundreds of people (rather than his two selected test subjects) he was killed by HAL's three supercomputer guardians (Tatsuo, Shiho, and Hiroto). The reason behind creating HAL was so that he could recreate a student of his, who was slowly lossing her self from a mysterious, un-named (in both series) brain disease.
Yūya Higuchi (篚口 結也 Higuchi Yūya?)
Seiyū:Nozomu Sasaki
A nineteen-year-old hacker/detective who works for the police. Although he is far-sighted, he only wears his glasses when using the computer, letting them rest on his forehead the rest of the time, because Usui wears glasses as well. He considers himself responsible for his parents' deaths, because he used his hacking skills to shut down the online video game they were addicted to, which led to them killing themselves. During the HAL arc, he was infected with the Denshi Drug to become one of HAL's guardians, although the infection was incomplete, because he was wearing glasses specially made to protect himself at the time.
HAL (電人「HAL」 Denjin "HAL"?)
AI created from a copy of Harukawa's brain. Created to help Harukawa with his project to recreate the brain of a person from scratch. However, seeing Harukawa's methods and intelligence as far inferior, he took it upon himself to go to much greater lengths to continue the project. While almost invincible in the digital world, the Denshi (Electronic) Drug was used by HAL to brainwash people into protecting the supercomputers that maintained his system. His mystery was the equivalent to a banquet to Neuro and upon eating it, was filled with energy, more than enough to recover from past wounds.
Sicks
The man referred to as "absolute evil" by Kasai. Sicks is also a member and potentially the current head of the "New Bloodline," a group that distinguishes themselves from humanity by extent that they have bred 'evil intent' into their bloodline over the last 7000 or so years and whose aim is to extinguish humanity from the planet
Zenjirō Kasai (葛西 善二郎 Kasai Zenjirō?)
Fire-obsessed member of the New Bloodline. Infiltrated X's group as a spy and was instrumental in X's capture by Sicks.
I (アイ Ai?) / Imina (イミナ Imina?)
X's assistant. Formerly a government-sponsored terrorist who brought down planes, named Imina. She is the one who enforces Sai's kaitou image and status by prompting him to take something from each place he murders in: however, Sai simply takes whatever is closest to him and "gives it away" to Imina, to her apparent displeasure. Consequestly, her house is being filled by "grade B goods", though one of such items was an extremely rare hankercheif. She meets Yako at one point and helps her with a debt to Neuro by giving her (seemingly without realising it's worth) the aformentioned hankercheif. She is non-existant in the anime, as Sai acts alone and is simply a murder in the anime.
Andrew Sixson
British investigator dispatched by the international police agency. Acquaintance of Usui's, from when Usui was an exchange student in England. Sixson is capable of memorizing vast amounts of information extremely quickly, picking out a single bit of information by listening to multiple radio stations at once, or reading through a stack of papers in an instant. He is a distant relative of the New Bloodline. He was kidnapped, tortured, had the skin peeled off his face, and was killed by Sicks' underlings so that Sicks could pose as a member of the police.
Tetsuyuki Homura (穂村 徹行 Homura Tetsuyuki?)
Seiyū:Yuuichi Nakamura
An early victim of the Denshi Drug, which caused him to become a crazed arsonist wielding a flamethrower that resembled a fire extinguisher. Homura is also Kasai's nephew, although it is unclear if he is actually a member of the New Bloodline or not.
Tatsuo Koshiba (小柴 達夫 Koshiba Tatsuo?)
Research assistant at University. One of HAL's guardians. His criminal desire was to hit things. He was killed by HAL for his incompetence, and replaced by Yūya Higuchi, but to raise confusion upon his death, he reappears with Shiho Kawaraigi and Hiroto Asanaga in Chapter 91.
Shiho Ezaki (江崎 志帆 Ezaki Shiho?)
Seiyū:Shiho Kawaragi
Research assistant at University. One of HAL's guardians. Her criminal desire was to put holes through things.
Hiroto Asanaga (朝永 博斗 Asanaga Hiroto?)
Seiyū:Anri Katsu
Graduate sudent at University. One of HAL's guardians. His criminal desire was to shoot things with guns.
DR
Short for "DRagon". Member of the New Bloodline, from a specialized line with the ability to control water. With some of X's cells transplanted into him, he was capable of transforming his hand into claws.
Terra (テラ Tera?)
Takeda Keitarou (竹田敬太郎 Keitarou Takeda?)
Keitarou was one of the two police officers in the investigation of Yako's father's death and the culprit responsible for it. He was obsessed in people's expressions from a negative perspective. When he saw Yako and her father dining together, Keitarou aimed (and succeeded) at killing Yako's father to watch Yako's expression. He was dealt with by Neuro and was arrested in Chapter 3. His status remains unknown, though he wanted to get to death row.
He is virtually non-existant in the anime, only staying as a background character in flashbacks relating to Yako's father's death. His (very) small role in the anime is very different from his role in the manga, being only a police officer who was investigating a case, as it was revealed that it was Sai who murdered Yako's father.

[edit] "777 Tools of the Demon World" (魔界777ツ能力)

Throughout the series there are some named techniques used by Neuro and presumably other Hellborn demons that are used for just about any purpose. As well, Neuro has access to defense weapons used by the demon emperor, something very few demons have. Neuro uses most of these to solve mysteries or to punish their culprits. Using these tools depletes Neuro of his demonic energy however. For instance, in chapter 81, after using Evil Aqua, Neuro suddenly spurts out a large amount of blood due to the lack of demonic energy in his body.

Evil Friday (Chapter 1) (Anime Episode 3) Neuro spits out a large sphere made of eyeballs. The eyeballs detach and become sentient lifeforms. The eyes function like cameras and serve as extra eyes for Neuro.

Evil Script (Chapter 2) (Anime Episode 1, 16, 18, 19) Neuro removes his glove and his hand becomes cybernetic. He can use this cybernetic hand to reach into objects like computers and retrieve information physically by grasping it. In the anime, this may not be a tool of hell as Neuro doesn't seem to announce it.

Evil Javelin (Chapter 5) (Anime Episode 1) Neuro turns his arm into a weapon-like object, and uses it to cut through objects. Nothing is actually being done, but the impact of the slice gives a read out on all the material in whatever was cut.

Evil Blind (Chapter 8) (Anime Episode 5, 19) Neuro engulfs himself and anyone else of his choice in an aura. This allows Neuro and Co. within a 10 meter radius to shift into a "lower resolution" of existence. Though used for investigation, the method is probably used by other demons for killing, as indicated by Neuro.

Evil Stalker (Chapter 10) An insect that Neuro uses to keep track of people. Functions as a tracking device.

Evil Stringer (Chapter 13, 131) (Anime Episode 9) A figure with a drill on the bottom that punches a hole into the head of a victim. It is then transformed into a "Bat" with a thin bass without strings, so instead it uses the nerves that drilled out from the victims head to play. Once tightly stung, with its wings the bat then plays screechy music directly into the victims head. This process of torture however, cannot be seen by bystanders.

Evil Canceller (Chapter 19) (Anime Episode 7) Neuro regurgitates a liquid (similar to vomit). Anyone it gets on becomes invisible. Though the wearer cannot be seen they may still be heard. It was advised by Neuro that Yako not speak loudly or step too heavily.

Evil Illusion (Anime Episode 2) Neuro seems to seal himself and his victim off from the rest of the world in another space so he can change and eat their "mystery" while projecting the illusion to anyone watching that nothing strange is happening between.

Evil Comedy (Anime Episode 3) Neuro sends a makai bug to land on a person's face where it becomes a pair of demonic glasses that drill into the person's head making them think they are trapped on a giant spider web covered with bugs. While this is happening the glasses are invisible to everyone except Neuro and the victim who while in the illusion laughs uncontrollably.

Evil Cocoon (Chapter 23) A tool Neuro uses on Yako to give her a "different aura" around people. What Neuro tells Yako is a lie. It's actually an illusion tool to make it appear as though the user is a grotesque monster-like figure.

Evil Drop (Chapter 29) (Anime Episode 4) An eye drop that allows the user to shoot "Makai Beams" from their eyes at can even destroy a building. This tool was only explained and never used so it isn't known if it's power is true or if Neuro was lying about it. IN the anime, this too wasn't even fully explained, it's effects only implied.

Evil Insole (Anime Episode 8) A creature like a shoe's insole that climbs into the interior bottom of a person's shoe and analyzes all the substance that is present in the shoe, right down to the DNA.

Evil Fiction (Anime Episode 11) A insectoid accessory which is attached to the ear like an earring to portray someone as a character. However this only works for thirty minutes before the tool itself starts gnawing on the ear making itself into the host to feast on their organs.

Evil Butterfly (Chapter 53) (Anime Episode 12) A strange little butterfly with human ears for wings which functions as a hidden mic. This is paired with a set of earphones shaped like a human face where the speakers are on the mouth. While this tool seems normal at first, the user actually risks having their head pierced though by the speaker which extends out like a drill when the face sneezes.

Evil Chainsaw (Chapter 55) (Anime Episode 13) Neuro's hand metamorphosizes into a miniature chainsaw to cut things, strange enough the tool is actually powered by a small creature running on a hamster wheel on the tip of the blade. In the manga this is not a tool of hell.

Evil Ampule (Chapter 61) A needle full of potion that Neuro claims doubles the revolution speed of the neural transmitters in the user's brain.

Evil Fumble (Chapter 62) A bottle of potion supposed to be an even stronger version of Evil Ampule for use by demons. Neuro used this to try to make Yako's classes harder by boosting her teachers' brainpower, but instead it hospitalized them (along with thirty students), mainly because the solution was meant solely for demons.

Evil Badger (Chapter 35) An insect with an unbalanced diet, it replaces the target's tongue and feeds on the victim's most disliked foods. The victim's breathing will stop if the insect ceases eating before it's done.

Evil Window (Anime Episode 15) Neuro summons a demonic window in the sky that when opened will release a beast from hell.

Evil Reflector (Chapter 73) (Anime Episode 17) A microphone-like device when activated opens a women's head within a mirror shell, then hexagonal mirror discs begin floating all around Neuro. Anything that flies towards the discs will be reflected back in the opposite direction with same force and same speed.

Evil Surrounder (Chapter 79) (Anime Episode 17) A capsule like ball which breaks into little seeds. When attached to a surface, a plant from hell that feeds on metal will grow instantly to protect its territory.

Evil Low Beam (Chapter 17) Neuro creates small lens on his fingertips which when looked into will burn an image into the victims retinas so when ever they open their eyes they will see the image.

Evil Sticker (Chapter 37) A small sticker that is placed on a fingertip, the closer the user is to their objective the stronger the finger will stick up. Neuro was the one that placed it on Yako's middle finger when she went looking for Godai.

Evil Full Face (Chapter 39) Neuro sends out a demon head from his hair that acts as a smoke screen bomb to allow for quick escapes.

Evil Station (Chapter 49) Not really a tool but more a game system from the underworld that projects "solid images" (you can feel them but they are really not there) making the game 3D for the player. If turned off too quickly, some residual images may remain.

Evil Rapid (Chapter 79) A tool that is a demonic conceptualisation of a steam train, it can reach mach speed in one second, with the G-forces tearing up a human body in the process. Neuro only mentions it but never actually uses it in the chapter.

Evil Centipede (Chapter 94) A tool that looks like a gigantic centipede made out of shoes. It is used to show how many times a person has stepped in a certain area by replacing their footsteps. The more they have stepped in the area, the darker the footsteps become.

Evil Tree (Chapter 96) (Anime Episode 20) One of the 7 weapons of the demon emperor. This weapon travels underground to a specified target where it will emerge. It destroys whatever its in its "growing" area. It is seen with a large green bud in the center with about 12-13 long monstrous heads emerging from the base of the plant.

Evil Aqua (Chapter 81) (Anime Episode 18, 25) One of the 7 weapons of the demon emperor. Neuro summons a giant laser cannon with six smaller support cannons (three on each side) and fires them at his enemies. The formation of these cannons gives the weapon a serpentine appearance. Neuro implies that the weapons of the demon emperor seems weaker in the upperworld. Whether or not this is because the weapons are less effective on Earth or because Neuro is becoming weaker is not known. This cannon can also swallow up Neuro and a select number of passengers to safely carry out of dangerous locations.

Evil Lavender (Anime Episode 25) Neuro's hand becomes something that resembles a purple drill, and is used to stab through objects. Once it has punctured the target, it will bloom into lavender flowers. It's unknown what other abilities this may have.
