Reference tags

Hi. Thanks for all your hard work in tagging articles where additional or complete referencing is needed. I did want to direct your attention to guidelines for use in most reference needed templates that suggest that the usual practice is to place them at the top of the article unless the template is for a specific section concerned. It's easier to see, and gets more attention than when placed at the bottom. I happened to notice this when I was looking at articles for members of the Monkees. In any case, thanks! Wildhartlivie (talk) 09:05, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

Perhaps, but there are differences between aesthetics, opinions and guidelines. Wildhartlivie (talk) 09:22, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

Rudget!

Dear Longhair, my sincere thanks for your support in my second request for adminship, which ended with 113 supports, 11 opposes, and 4 neutral. I would especially like to thank my admin coach and nominator, Rlevse and Ryan Postlethwaite who in addition to Ioeth all inspired me to run for a second candidacy. I would also like to make a special mention to Phoenix-wiki, Dihyrdogen Monoxide and OhanaUnited who all offered to do co-nominations, but I unfortunately had to decline. I had all these funny ideas that it would fail again, and I was prepared for the worst, but at least it showed that the community really does have something other places don't. Who would have though Gmail would have been so effective? 32 emails in one week! (Even if it does classify some as junk :P) I'm glad that I've been appointed after a nail biting and some might call, decision changing RFA, but if you ever need anything, just get in touch. The very best of luck for 2008 and beyond, Rudget. 16:49, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

A favour

I wonder if you (or anyone else reading this) would mind looking at Template:WikiProject Cricket and providing some advice. There's two issues.

  1. A project member has added a "Bottom-importance" to the code and created the respective categories. The rationale for this is good, but is it possible for the bot which updates the log and statistics tables to be changed to cope with this? If not, I'd guess we need to go back to top, high, mid and low.
  2. Is a "List-Class" able to be added? And if so, would you mind.

Reply here if you like. —Moondyne 04:49, 30 January 2008 (UTC)

Actually, after doing some more reading and thinking since the above post, I reckon that its not all that critical if the bottom parameter articles don't go into the bot processing. As long as they get categorised, and they are. —Moondyne 23:44, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks

I appreciate your taking time out to clarify the issue on the category thing. I realise I might have confused some of the processes - thanks for separating it all out :) SatuSuro 15:27, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

Linkspam

Hey Longhair, you reverted my anon edit of a link to Australia 2020 Summit. I added http://2020summit.org/ as external link to the same article while logged in and as they have a similar function, I wonder why you consider one is linkspam and another is not. cheers, pfctdayelise (talk) 06:53, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

Hello,
As it is such a new thing it's not like there is a ton of established resources on the topic. I don't think either of them are "spam" as in inappropriate or indiscriminately-placed links.
I added them because it is a new topic that explicitly invites participation from all citizens. As the official site is static, people who come to Wikipedia are likely to be looking for ways to participate. Those links bother offer ways of participating.
Mostly I guess I am curious if the revert was "anon bias". cheers, pfctdayelise (talk) 06:16, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks

No worries, thanks for your quick response to the user Melburnian (talk) 07:20, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

Message, then

I recieved a message saying that my change of the article of Randle McMurphy was not constructive and that if I continued I would be banned. I added in that McMurphy tried to rape Nurse Ratched and tore off her clothes to show that she was not a machine but in fact very much human and as vulnerable as the rest of us. If you've read the book and disagree with my interpretation, i would be more than happy to discuss it, but as it is, this is the way that the book portrays this event, and i do not appreciate being told i will be banned if i continue in this fashion, which i can only take to mean that if i continue to make posts that are relevant and completely true, i will be banned. Please either take down your bot or script it so it is not as broad and does not message people who only trying to actually make Wikipedia a more correct and better place. Cheers man. --Eidlyn (talk) 06:46, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

Alright, that would be great. It doesn't happen in the film because the film dumbed down a lot of the book, but in the end, he definitely rips off part of her clothes and I believe he does begin to rape her or its implied that he does. Also, how do you send messages using this thing? I'm sorry for the heated message, I was just a little peeved that you're automated message was threatening to ban me when, i think you'll agree, i really wasn't trying to just mess up the article, just adding more information. Cheers --Eidlyn (talk) 08:01, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

Then I'm sorry for flying off like that. Pg 275,"performing a hard duty that finally just had to be done, like it or not" i believe implies attempted rape, especially since he just tore her uniform down the middle with her breasts hanging out and everything. By the way, yea i know you aren't a bot, I just thought you had a bot gunning for you.--Eidlyn (talk) 22:13, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Electronicfrontiersaustralialogo.png

Thanks for uploading Image:Electronicfrontiersaustralialogo.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it may be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 13:50, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

Melpedia Link

Thanks for giving me an explanation on why you removed the page, but delisting it because it only has 5 users, is that a valid reason? It doesn't mention registered user base as one of the reasons for removing a wiki. I've put in maybe 200 hours into the wiki, including photographing many streets and locations in the Melbourne CBD. I'd like you to perhaps browse the site a bit more, in particular the the allpages link, you'll see that it is not a new wiki, nor is it that small. KiwiTallGuy (talk) 10:48, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

Ok, my bad, I've reread the external links article and perhaps it isn't of a criteria to be added yet. Strange, though, I have other wikis listed in Wikipedia that are of a smaller size then this site and I haven't added the links myself, other Wikipedia editors have. I guess I'll wait for that to happen in this case as well. KiwiTallGuy (talk) 10:52, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

re. Giggy got funny mouth

This made me laugh (out loud btw). You're a funny guy. Regarding your last RfA, I said I'd support some time in the future. Just letting you know your efforts around here of late have "earned" my support, whatever that's worth these days :) Until you chose to run again... Cheers. -- Longhair\talk 11:14, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

Hehehe, thanks for that. It's always nice to be rewarded for enforcing core policy! I don't plan to run for RfA any time in the near future, mainly because I'm happy being a cynical promoter of moar swearing doing what I'm doing now (read; clogging up AWNB/A with my FxCs). But yeah, maybe one day in the future. btw. I noticed you haven't yet supported Riana's RfB. Maybe you should based on my commentary there ;) Cheers mate, dihydrogen monoxide (H20) 22:24, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

ANI thread

Can you come back to here if you have the time or interest please. I need to get some more views on what I think continues to be a complex case of conflict of interest by this editor - and whether this should just got to the Wikipedia Foundation now rather than us trying to deliberate it further. Fair use rationale for Image:Crackerjack.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Crackerjack.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Project FMF (talk) 19:55, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

Image:Mallboyfilm.jpg

I have tagged Image:Mallboyfilm.jpg as {{no rationale}}, because it does not provide a fair use rationale. If you believe the image to be acceptable for fair use according to Wikipedia policy, please provide a rationale explaining as much, in accordance with the fair use rationale guideline, on the image description page. Some examples can be found at Wikipedia:Use rationale examples. Please also consider using {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags/Non-free. Thank you. Project FMF (talk) 19:56, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Bad boy bubby.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Bad boy bubby.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Mother Goose stuffed.jpg

Thank you for uploading Image:Mother Goose stuffed.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 16:18, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

Pinball Links

Hey, Sorry I was unaware Wikipedia's restrictions on adding links to websites that you own. I personally feel that the information provided on the website is a worthwhile external link, and due to how often the information is updated hard to add to each Wikipedia entry. And due to the mass removal of the links yesterday after being on the encyclopedia for several months now without any discussion was malicious. Are you saying to re include each link it has to be discussed on the separate talk pages? Muddyboy (talk) 08:07, 9 March 2008 (UTC)

Criticism of Jimbo Wales

The Register has recently been critical that some people do not have enough criticism in their article and surely we should set a good example by ensuring all criticism of Jimbo, not matter how trivial is documented. The tiny amount in Jimbo's article is a whitewash. Trying to censor or delete such an article will be a PR disaster for Wikipedia.Momento (talk) 09:26, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use Image:Martin Bryant.jpg

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Martin Bryant.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Lawrence § t/e 19:30, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:TenApplesUpOnTop cover.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:TenApplesUpOnTop cover.jpg.

Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 12:05, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of Image:Camerons Corner 3 borders.jpg

A tag has been placed on Image:Camerons Corner 3 borders.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image licensed as "for non-commercial use only," "non-derivative use" or "used with permission," it has not been shown to comply with the limited standards for the use of non-free content. If, however, you believe that this image may be retained on Wikipedia under one of the permitted conditions then:
  • state clearly the source of the image. If it has been copied from elsewhere on the web you should provide links to: the image itself, the page which uses it and the page which contains the license conditions.
  • add the relevant copyright tag.

New Project

Myself and several other editors have been compiling a list of very active editors who would likely be available to help new editors in the event they have questions or concerns. As the list grew and the table became more detailed, it was determined that the best way to complete the table was to ask each potential candidate to fill in their own information, if they so desire. This list is sorted geographically in order to provide a better estimate as to whether the listed editor is likely to be active.

If you consider yourself a very active Wikipedian who is willing to help newcomers, please either complete your information in the table or add your entry. If you do not want to be on the list, either remove your name or just disregard this message and your entry will be removed within 48 hours. Thank you for uploading Image:Anitacobby.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use.
