[edit] List by prefecture

Does anyone have preference about listing of cities? As you see, I categorized cities according to prefectures. Do you think mere alphabetical listing better without any subheadings ? -- Taku

No, I think this system works. Unless you can have a dynamically changable system

Hi, I fond the list of all munipals in Japan in Japanese version: w:ja:全国市町村一覧. I have a question on this article. What means List of cities in Japan? Japanese government categorizes munipals in three: cities, towns and villages. Just now I added some cities. If this list includes also towns and villages, I can add them too. Anyone care if I move this article to "List of cities and districts in Japan" and include the prefecture templates that have each prefecture's cities and districts (rather than the current list of cities)? My guess is that if the templates are included, the cities in this article will be kept more up to date. If no one responds by March 13, 2005 I'll do this. -- Rick Block 20:23, 6 Mar 2005 (UTC)

There needs to be some sort of note pointing out the sort order of this list, out of context it makes no sense! -- anon —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.246.64.164 (talk) 16:22, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Edit this template
This would be fine, but doing this requires editing each template or repeating the content here. The whole point of including the templates here was to avoid repeating the content, so I hope you're suggesting we edit the templates to add the edit link. -- Rick Block 12:20, 25 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Oh yeah! I just copied the Chiba template here so I could see what the edit link looked like without changing the original. It turns out someone's thought of this already, so there's a {{edit}} that can be dropped into a template.
OK. All the templates have edit links now. -- Rick Block 01:43, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] References

Could some references be added to this list? After that, it would probably be a good candidate for Wikipedia:Featured list candidates, jguk 17:54, 17 December 2005 (UTC)

This list of cities is almost certainly not up to date (not just the population numbers, but the city names themselves) due to numerous mergers, see Merger and dissolution of municipalities of Japan. Dozens of new cities have been founded in the last year or two, and in numerous cases existing cities have merged with surrounding towns and villages forming new (renamed) cities. To make this a featured list, I'd think it would have to be extensively updated. -- Rick Block (talk) 18:39, 17 December 2005 (UTC)

Oh. Shouldn't there be a note to that effect at the top of the article? jguk 18:44, 17 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Out of date

This list is out of date. Alot of the cities in the list have merged during the Merger and dissolution of municipalities of Japan. --Jonte-- 18:59, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Sorting of dates

It appears that the sort feature is not working properly on the date column. Even one of the date sorting examples given at Help:Sorting wasn't functioning properly. Perhaps ISO 8601 would be ideal here? (which, by the way, is a standard adopted in Japan) —Tokek 20:45, 10 November 2007 (UTC)

Bingo. "ISO 8601 dates (1976-05-12) are uncommon in English prose, and are generally not used in Wikipedia. However, they may be useful in long lists and tables for conciseness and ease of comparison." WP:DATE. Sounds like a near perfect candidate for this artile. I don't really trust the JavaScript sorting feature to become 100% flawless anytime soon, so I will be converting the dates into ISO 8601 format. —Tokek 20:51, 10 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Tokyo

"Note that Tokyo is actually a special kind of prefecture not a city." I find this a bit inaccurate. Tokyo is a name of type of prefecture "to" but the prefecture is divided into cities and the 23 wards of old Tokyo city. These wards are what many consider to be Tokyo city but for most situations they operate as if they are independent cities. So either the city of Tokyo or the individual wards(ku) should be listed.

Miyashita

I think the special wards should be added. -- Rick Block (talk) 14:24, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
