India, officially known as the Republic of India, is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh largest country by geographical area, the second most populous country, and the largest democracy in the world.[1][2] India has the world's twelfth largest economy at market exchange rates and the third largest in purchasing power. Economic reforms have transformed it into the second fastest growing large economy.[3] However, it still suffers from high levels of poverty,[4] illiteracy, and malnutrition. As a pluralistic, multilingual, and multiethnic society, India is also home to a diversity of wildlife in a variety of protected habitats.
India is bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian Sea on the west, and the Bay of Bengal on the east, and has a coastline of 7,517 kilometers (4,671 mi).[5] It borders Pakistan to the west;[6] China, Nepal, and Bhutan to the north-east; and Bangladesh and Burma to the east.
After being colonised by the United Kingdom from the mid-nineteenth century, India became a modern nation state in 1947 after a struggle for independence that was marked by widespread nonviolent resistance.

- ^ Footnote: The Government of India also considers Afghanistan to be a bordering country. This is because it considers the entire state of Jammu and Kashmir to be a part of India including the portion bordering Afghanistan. A ceasefire sponsored by the United Nations in 1948 froze the positions of Indian and Pakistani held territory. As a consequence, the region bordering Afghanistan is in Pakistan-administered territory.
