The former call sign for KNVN is KCPM, which is currently used for a TV station in Grand Forks, North Dakota. To see the TV station in Grand Forks, see KCPM (Defunct TV Station).

KNVN is the NBC affiliate in the Sacramento Valley of California. Broadcasting from its transmitter in Red Bluff, California, the NVN in the station's call letters stands for North Valley News. The station is owned by Evans Broadcasting Inc. and is operated by Catamount Broadcasting, which also owns KHSL-TV, the local CBS affiliate. KNVN and KHSL produce the same late night news, Action News. The station's Redding offices at located in the Mt. Shasta Mall. KNVN is Action News's perdominent station for Redding area viewers. It is seen on channel 4 on both Charter and Comcast cable systems

From 2002 to 2004, KNVN produced and broadcast a popular locally-produced magazine show called Your Show Live, hosted by Shaye Leeper and Dave Tappan. It was broadcast live on KNVN and rebroadcast via tape-delay on KHSL Channel 12. The show was abruptly ended in February 2004.

The station first aired on September 24, 1985 as KCPM, as a sister station of KCRA-TV. It added a newscast of its own in May 1986 using some KCRA staff. It was owned by Kelly Broadcasting (the same company as KCRA) before selling to Grapevine Communications, L.L.C. (now New Vision, before Piedmont Television) and changing the call letters to KNVN in 1998. It is now California's youngest NBC affiliate. The KCPM call sign is currently used for a MyNetworkTV affiliate in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

[edit] Merger with KHSL

In February 2000, it merged news departments with KHSL because the failing new KNVN was at risk of having all of its newscasts dropped because of low viewership, but it still wanted to have some form of local news on. It didn't want to go back to using Sacramento news because it still wanted a complete form of local news, so it merged with KHSL to form Northern California News, or more commonly known as NCN. It dropped NCN in 2005 in favor of "The (hour) News" brand. It finally came up with a more permanent name in September 2006 called "Action News", and KHSL still plans to use that branding even if KHSL sells KNVN.

There have been a few rumors that KNVN and KHSL will separate news departments and become rivals again after the analog switch-off in 2009. If KHSL sells KNVN in 2009, NBC Weather Plus will be on channel 24.2 instead of the AccuWeather Channel, which will most likely move to KHSL-TV. In addition, KNVN would change its city of license to Red Bluff or Redding, thus reflecting its transmitter location east of Red Bluff. It also adds a greater news emphasis to the Redding area.

[edit] Other NBC Coverage

  • Redding & Red Bluff area - did not have any other NBC coverage
  • North: KMED-TV Channel 10, Medford (now KTVL, CBS) (1961-1983), KOBI/KOTI (1983-today)
  • East: KRNV-TV Channel 4, Reno (1962-today)
  • West: KVIQ-TV Channel 6, Eureka (now CBS) (1958-mid 1980s), KIEM (mid 1980s-today)
  • South: KCRA-TV Channel 3, Sacramento (1955-today)
  • Channel 4 covered about the same area as KHSL-TV does, maybe a little bit less

[edit] Trivia

  • KNVN was not the first attempt at a third commercial station in the Chico-Redding area. There was most likely a failing ABC affiliate on a different channel and under a different license founded somewhere in the early to mid 1960s and lasted until somewhere in the 1970s. KCPM could've been a FOX affiliate later on if the previous station didn't fail.
  • KCPM first aired on September 24, 1985 as a full-time satellite of KCRA-TV, with greater coverage than Redding's original satellite
  • KCPM didn't air a newscast of its own until May 1986
  • The KCPM call sign could be dubbed as a variant of KCRA, meaning Chico/Paradise/Magalia instead of a misspelling of "Sacramento".
  • KNVN is known to have frequent transmitter problems and/or outages.

[edit] Former News Titles

  • 24 Reports (1986-1998)

[edit] Digital Television

The station's digital channel is multiplexed:

Digital channels

PSIP
Channel
Physical
RF Channel
Comcast Charter Video Aspect Programming
24.1 36.1 4 / 904 4 / 784 1080i 16:9 KNVN HD
24.2 36.2 193 284 480i 4:3 The AccuWeather Channel

In 2009, KNVN will remain on channel 24 when the analog to digital conversion is complete.[1]

As of March 20, 2007, the Newscasts on KNVN are not broadcasted in High Definition. On April 19, 2007, both KNVN and KHSL began adding High Definition (with their respective digital channel number) on their personality promos that they air on TV, signaling that HD will be coming. According to the GM of the station, KHSL/KNVN plans on broadcasting their newscasts in HD in about 12 months.

As of May 24, 2008 the news is still not brocasted in high definition because of rumors of a news department separation. It is more than likely that both stations would broadcast local news in high definition if KHSL and KNVN become separate news departments. KNVN is not going to renew its analog license when it expires on December 1, 2008 and KHSL will turn its analog signal off on January 15, 2009, a month earlier than the February 17, 2009 deadline. The separation of news departments would have to take place sometime in late August or September.

[edit] Translators

KNVN is rebroadcasted by way of the following translators:

Most mountain communities use other NBC affiliates:

Areas lacking a translator:

  • Trinity County currently uses KUSA on DCA CableVision Channel 13 in Weaverville and Lewiston, and Channel 3 in Hayfork. Trinity County may get translators from either KIEM or KNVN in the near future.
  • Lakehead currently uses KUSA on DCA CableVision Channel 4, and may get a KNVN translator in the near future.
  • All the areas served by DCA CableVision described above carried KNVN-TV on the same channel positions from September 12, 2006 until recently.
