KKMG (98.9 FM), known as "98.9 Magic FM", is a heritage CHR/Top 40 radio station in Colorado Springs-Pueblo radio market. The Citadel Broadcasting outlet is licensed to Pueblo and has an ERP of 57 kW.
[edit] History
KKMG signed on in 1983 and originally served only the Pueblo area. KKMG had a slightly different moniker calling itself "Magic 99," in spite of the fact it was on 98.9 and KVUU was on the 99.9 frequency.
In 1987 KKMG adjusted their moniker to "Magic FM" in order to end any confusion between them and KVUU. In the fall of 1988 KKMG decided to make the move into the Colorado Springs area. Recently then direct competitor KATM also made a move into the city to compete with current CHR leader KIKX. With both stations playing a Mainstream Hit Music mix, KKMG switched to a Rhythmic/Crossover format which was then a mix of Pop, R&B, and Dance music with very little Hard Rock. KKMG became a player in the Colorado Springs market and would eventually force KIKX and KATM out of the CHR format. KKMG would move back to a CHR/Pop lean in 1994. In spite of its good ratings, KKMG lost money, and entered a Lease Marketing Agreement with Classic Rocker KKFM in 1991. KKFM's parent company Citadel Broadcasting would buy KKMG and is owned by the company to this day. KKMG had dominated the radio ratings in CS until 2004 when KIBT signed on with a Hip-Hop/R&B leaning Rhythmic format.
