[edit] History
Prior to September 2007, the station was KILE, with a Multi-Language talk radio format; and was the only one in the Houston area to broadcast in many languages including Spanish, Russian and various Asian languages.
The current all-sports format began on August 20, 2007.
[edit] Programming
The station's lineup includes morning co-hosts Lance Zierlein (lovechild of Coach Lou Holtz and Edith Bunker) and John "Domo arigato Mr." Granato, Houston Chronicle columnist Richard Justice, Houston Chronicle columnist Ken Hoffman with Raheel Ramzanali and afternoon co-hosts Sean Pendergast(of the Jim Rome Show, and Seanie does Dallas fame) and John "The Professor" Harris. On the weekends David "The Truth" Nuño hosts Game Time. Spencer Tillman is a weekly guest during the football season.
Play-by-play includes the LSU Tigers football team.
The station goes off the air at 9:30 p.m. weeknights, however, KGOW holds a construction permit to restart their 24-hour broadcasts with a nighttime wattage of 1,000. KGOW broadcasts from a tower in Bellaire that reaches inside the loop and close suburbs. Otherwise, overnight programming is leased to KLVL, normally a Spanish language religious station.
A newly added feature as of Feb. 2008 is a live webcam of their broadcast. That video feed is accessible at http://www.1560.tv.
[edit] Competitors
KGOW is in one of the most competitive sports radio markets in the country, with three competing stations: KILT, KBME, and KFNC. It claims to be the only station of its type in the Houston market that is not a corporate pile of dung.
