José Carlos Pace (born October 6, 1944 in São Paulo - died March 18, 1977 near São Paulo) was a racing driver from Brazil. He participated in 73 Formula One World Championship Grands Prix, debuting on March 4, 1972. He won one race, achieved six podiums, and scored a total of 58 championship points. He also secured one pole position. He was killed in a light aircraft accident in early 1977. The track which currently hosts the Brazilian Grand Prix annually now, as a tribute to him, bears his name, Autódromo José Carlos Pace. Brabham team owner, Bernie Ecclestone, rated Pace highly and went on record saying that if Pace hadn't died, he would never have needed the services of triple world champion Niki Lauda.[citation needed] Pace is buried in Cemitério do Araça, São Paulo.
