[edit] Mary Chapin Carpenter

Billboard.com almost always has the singles out of chronological order for some odd reason. I have the country charts from 1990 to the present, copied word for word, number for number, from back issues of Billboard on my computer (for private use only), and I can verify that, at the very least, the Top 40 singles are in order. Furthermore, it's very rare for an artist to release a single off one album, then skip back to a single off a previous album -- it just doesn't make sense, marketing-wise. Ten Pound Hammer(((ActionsWords))) 19:12, 23 April 2007 (UTC)

By the way, I should also add that Billboard.com occasionally leaves out singles entirely. For instance, they only list one of the singles for McBride & the Ride (even though that group charted a dozen singles); I had to consult a friend who owned the Joel Whitburn book to find all of that group's singles! [edit] Chabon

  • Ya seeing that was pretty cool, eh? Anyways, ya I agree with you, I just deleted the part about marrying Waldman because it didn't seem to fit anywhere else. I was going to give another look at it tonight to see if it could go anywhere else, but feel free to add it in yourself! -- Chabuk T • C ] 02:41, 26 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Your GA nomination of Pauline Kael

The article Pauline Kael you nominated as a good article has passed , see Talk:Pauline Kael for eventual comments about the article. Well done! I would actually highly recommend you seek Featured Article status for this. You and your fellow editors have done an excellent job with this, and I believe it should rank more than just a GA. Again, very well done! Hersfold (talk/work) 23:17, 7 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Your GA nomination of Jim Henson

The article Jim Henson you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold. It hasn't failed because it's basically a good article, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needed to be addressed. If these are fixed within seven days, the article will pass, otherwise it will fail. See Talk:Jim Henson for things needed to be addressed. LaraLoveT/C 06:42, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

Sorry about trimming refs. References are not always necessary in the lead as they should be referenced in the body. In the case of the first ref, that should stay in the lead considering it's not referencing the same information as is refed in the body. Does that make sense? Anyway, good work. Congrats. LaraLove 20:03, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Shakespeare influences

Sorry to remove your influences/influenced section from the William Shakespeare infobox. I think it is important that the box for that article doesn't contain those sections. The matter was discussed at length, here: Talk:William Shakespeare/Archive 4#Influenced by James and Elizabeth? source?. Best. AndyJones 13:04, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] In response to: Notability of Eckerd paragraph in Tom Perrotta

Hello, you've commented on my discussion page the following:

Hi! I had removed the short paragraph on Perrotta's serving as guest faculty at Eckerd College because I didn't believe it to be notable; in the grand scheme of his "Career" it was a relatively insignificant position. (Imagine trying to list all the times Joyce Carol Oates, for example, has served on a guest faculty panel or appeared at a conference.) True, there is a source referencing the information, but it's the St. Petersburg Times (and Eckerd is in St. Petersburg), so I feel as if the source is not completely "independent from the subject," and the information seems (to me) to be of local and "news burst" interest only. (I don't know a ton about Perrotta, though, so the position may indeed be a crucial one in terms of his career. Let me know.) Hobbesy3 03:28, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

I'd like to respond. I would recommend keeping the info for the following reasons. First, Perrotta, while an up and coming author with several noted novels and movie deals, is not yet at a Joyce Carol Oates level and second, while I agree that listing every single time an author served on a guest faculty panel or appeared at a conference (for any author) would be a bit much, this course at Eckerd College taught by Perrotta was a month long and the Writers in Paradise program that the course was part of is in its third year, as well as being co-directed by Dennis Lehane, also an up and coming author. The Program itself, which takes place every winter in January, is fairly significant, with Steven King being a professor last year. My reasoning is that if a program is significant enough to have Steven King as a professor, it's significant enough to go on Perrotta's record (together with what I said above). Thus, combined with Perrotta's relative young age for a writer and the notability of the program, and the time he spent teaching (much longer than just a conference or a guest faculty panel), we should keep the info.

As far as the issue with references, while I agree that Eckerd is in St. Petersburg, and the news article is in St. Petersburg Times, this newspaper is the largest newspaper in Florida, and is one of the largest newspapers in the nation. Saying that because a quote-unquote "home newspaper" is reporting on a college in its city, we should thus not put any stock into what it reported is just like saying that if the New York Times reported on New York City University, then we should not really trust what New York Times is saying. While I'm sure this is not what you meant, but St. Petersburg Times is not some small city podunk newspaper and to suggest that just because you "feel as if the source is not completely 'independent from the subject,' and the information seems . . . to be of local and 'news burst' interest only," we should thus discount what a respected paper is reporting, is going a bit overboard. Newspapers this large and respected are known to keep impartiality and while I'm not against finding another or additional source for this bit of information, home city newspapers are not like home city politicians -- generally, thus a likely need for another source if you wish.

Thus, to sum up, combined with what I said above about Perrotta and the significance of the program and Eckerd, as well as the impartiality of the newspaper, we should really keep this information (especially considering it's taking up just two or three lines).

Also, please, in the future, let's discuss things before anything is removed. Thank you. (RossF18 04:03, 15 July 2007 (UTC))

Hello again: Yes,
Perrotta was invited to teach at Eckerd College by Dennis Lehane; the two writers had previously taught together at Stonecoast Writers Conference in Maine.

works very well. I would support the change if you'd like to make it. Thank you for all your work on the article. I'll try to address the source issue in the near future by trying to find another source or two that cites his work at Eckerd. (RossF18 04:45, 15 July 2007 (UTC))

[edit] J.D. Salinger

I saw your comment on my talk page about your FAC nom that I failed. Normally, we want people to wait at least a couple of weeks before renominating, but I'll tell you what -- if you're feeling up to it, why don't you go ahead and renominate it now? Raul654 02:44, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Merger proposed: Medicamina Faciei Feminae → Ovid

It has been proposed to merge the content of Medicamina Faciei Feminae into Ovid. Since you have previously edited one of these articles, I thought you might be interested. You're welcome to participate in the discussion if you like. --B. Wolterding 17:32, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Barnstar

The Barnstar of High Culture
For bringing Michael Chabon and Jonathan Lethem to GA status. I wish you continued success in improving articles related to contemporary literature. ShelfSkewed Talk 17:30, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

P.S. I'm more of a copy-edit and minor-edit kind of contributor, but I appreciate the time and hard work it takes to build a solid article. Good job! --ShelfSkewed Talk 17:30, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Forthcoming from Chabon

Well, if I'm one step ahead of you on the McSweeney's book, you've got one on me regarding the other one. Your mention of it was the first I'd heard. So I went to The Amazing Website of Kavalier & Clay's "Current Projects" page and followed the Publishers Weekly link. It looks like the 2009 book is something completely separate from the 2008 McSweeney's book.

That barnstar is the first and so far only one I've ever given, and you're very welcome. I hope you continue your good work and get more from other editors. Regards, --ShelfSkewed Talk 03:41, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fletch Won

Hi, I've redirected an article you created, Fletch Won (film), to Fletch (film)#Sequel and prequel, because per the notability guidelines for films, films do not warrant their own articles until they enter production. There are films that are purported to enter production, but due to the nature of the film industry, they do not always do so. Take a look at examples like Spider-Man 4, Jurassic Park IV, The Hobbit (2009 film), and Logan's Run (2010 film) to see how information about projects not yet in production are kept at their source materials' articles. Best regards, Liquidfinale (Ţ) (Ç) (Ŵ) 15:26, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] J.K. Rowling

Yep, totally my mistake. Thank you. Eagle Owl 11:51, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Salinger...

is looking great! I've actually edited this article a bit over the months so I can't do the GA review, but I think it deserves to pass. If you're looking to get it up to FA status I think it's getting really close. After the GA review we might try to bully User:Scartol into taking a look at the article. He just finished working on Chinua Achebe and although he says he's busy I'll bet he won't be able to resist reviewing somebody as major as Salinger. Anyways, just wanted to say great work on a really difficult bio! --JayHenry 04:43, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Chinua Achebe

Thank you for your contribution to Chinua Achebe. Ever since it became an FA, I've been very nervous whenever things are added; usually it's vandalism. I appreciate your positive contribution. Cheers! – Scartol · Talk 19:47, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] JD Salinger

Hey there. JayHenry told me you're working on the page for Mr. Salinger, and suggested I offer my services. Is this true? Would you like another set of eyes on that page? I'm happy to help; just say the word. (Please also let me know where you'd like me to leave comments.) – Scartol · Talk 15:11, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

The article is good – very good – but problems with the prose style will prevent it from being a GA at this time. I see two options on how to proceed:
  1. I fail it, we work together on copyediting, and then re-nom it and someone else reviews it; or
  2. I put it on hold, you find someone else to help with copyediting and make the repairs withing a week, and then I take another look.
Let me know which you prefer; either one is fine with me. – Scartol • Tok 23:48, 17 November 2007 (UTC)
Whereas a week has passed without my hearing anything from you on the subject, I'm going to fail the GA at this time and commence an extended review. I hope this isn't too disappointing – but rest assured that the brilliant insight I provide will more than make up for it. – Scartol • Tok 23:48, 23 November 2007 (UTC)
JayHenry told me – though I missed it – that I could put the article on hold and fix the things myself. D'oh! Sorry about that. Anyway, I've goen through and done a thorough copyedit, and a list of comments awaits at Talk:J. D. Salinger. When we brush those items up, I do believe it will be all set for GA passage. Sorry for the mixup and please let me know if you have any questions! – Scartol • Tok 14:14, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Mary Chapin Carpenter

Good job on improving the article. It looks a bit closer to neutral point of view now, but I think it could still use a few more sources, and maybe some more info on her chart success/reception by the general public. I'll see if there's anything I can add. Ten Pound Hammer(Broken clamshellsOtter chirps) 00:37, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

  • There doesn't seem to be a consensus on non-charting singles. I, personally, think that non-charting singles can be listed -- many artists put out singles that don't chart, so it wouldn't be indiscriminate information. I'll add a footnote for those songs to indicate that they didn't chart, as I've done on other occasions. Ten Pound Hammer(Broken clamshellsOtter chirps) 00:49, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Salinger

Congratulations on the Salinger GA pass! Just think of the tens of thousands (maybe even hundreds of thousands!) of students who will consult this every year when they read Catcher in the Rye. It's really an amazing thought. Awadewit left several good suggestions (she's one of the best people to know if you're interested in working on literature content) and I can try to help a bit with the book I have, although it's mostly focused on Holden himself. If you want to shoot for FA, I know of a couple more editors who give really good peer reviews and get the article into a state that it will almost certainly pass. If you're not too busy, I know it might be final exams season, I could ask around. --JayHenry (talk) 02:09, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, congrats aplenty on your fine work. I again encourage you to keep going on it; I've found some books which will be useful for you. (I'll post them here tomorrow; hopefully you'll be able to get your hands on them.) Well done! – Scartol • Tok 03:48, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
Sorry it's taken me so long; work on Emma Goldman has been taking up all my time. Here are the books which may be useful to you:

[edit] Unspecified source for Image:ElectionPerrotta.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:ElectionPerrotta.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 00:14, 5 February 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rockfang (talk) 00:14, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned non-free media (Image:TennWillsig.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:TennWillsig.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 18:03, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
